Dissapointing direction with Hearthfire, Bethesda...

Post » Wed Aug 29, 2012 10:21 am

You're relying on the assumption that every PC user thinks Hearthfire is a disappointment. I find it disappointing purely because I enjoyed the speculation of Hearthfire being a content DLC like Dawnguard. However, all that aside, I see no issues with the DLC itself. It's cheap, adds a fair amount of content, and even if mods exist that add both of those they can not compete with a full development studio. Hey, I love BYOH, it's a great mod, but he (the author) is one man. Of course, I'll see how the Xbox users react to Hearthfire before I decide whether or not it's superior enough over BYOH to warrant the $5.

I'm in the same boat as you. I'm more disappointed because, as I said, Hearthfire went through the same steps Dawnguard did, then Bethesda kinda dropped the ball by showing us.....this. Hell, even the trailer, imo, is laughably bad. There's a reason Gun Runner's Arsenal, Horse Armor and Frostcrag Spire didn't get their own trailer: because it's hard to hype up something that small without sounding like you're trolling people. I die of laughter at the part where they mention skeever infestations.
There's nothing wrong with the content itself (cept adoption. They should light that idea on fire and toss it off a cliff), but of COURSE this is gonna disappoint, as it should.

And yeah, I think it's a question of "is it worth it." Hearthfire is small to the point where people might not bother. Still makes more sense to me if they just would've attached the house-building feature to a bigger, Dawnguard-sized DLC.

Whether or not it's a disappointment is a matter of personal flexibility. Would I have liked to have seen another DG sized expansion? ABSOLUTELY. But am I "disappointed"? Well, no, not for what it is, at the listed price. In fact, in an older thread around here somewhere regarding building your own home, it is EXACTLY what I'd predicted/hoped for, I mean, down to minutest detail like random "invasions", modular building, multiple locations, buying the plot first, etc. So, no, for what it is, I am hardly disappointed.

Gstaff just wrote this to me
This is something we thought you guys would enjoy. Admittedly, it’s a smaller add-on (made by a smaller team). We’re still keen on doing “big and meaty” content, too :)

My gold just reached 299,867 today.
I could import something.

Not to mention that a person in Skyrim (especially a level 73 person) could just cross the border and load up, then come back.
Also the fact that a Telvanni wizard tower (the kind of place I'd like to live in most) only requires mushrooms and soul gems to build.

You had me at mushrooms. :woot:

Go to southfringe sanctum, relying on UESP was your first mistake.
Sorry but your wrong, The only quest related to Honorhall orphanage is the Dark brotherhood. From Selveni Nethri own dialog she snuck back to Riften to reclaim her daughter, but couldn't find her. Her daughter must have been adopted before Grelod the Kind stopped allowing it. (or she ranaway).

This is a DLC I was hoping beth would create. Always wanted to build my own house on my land I purchased somewhere around falkreath. I already made up my mind that I will not purchase the DLC Dawnguard AKA Townguard because of random vampire attacks inside cites. Im not a player who would use, play as a vampire lord or werewolf anyways. Hopefully Hearthfire is released for ps3!

I think bethesda largely ignores all of the kneejerk overreaction crap that go on, on these boards.

Heh. I already own a house. IRL. Why would I want to play house in a game?

Ok, it might be cool. For $5 what's not to like?

I'll buy it.

I'm going to flag Grelod as adoptable in the CK, adopt her, beat the hell out of her, resurrect her and then beat her over and over again.

I skipped Dawnguard, it looks i'll be skipping Hearthfire too. I was hoping Bethesda would give us two large expansions like Morrowind instead it looks like we're given less content than Oblivion and mich less than Fallout.

I'm not going to reward this policy. My money will stay in the wallet this time.

They are making something big, remember they told us they release small stuf meanwhile they work on something big? well heres the small add-on. also gstaff told me this when i asked him about "big and meaty" dlcs they were talking about before.

Ditto.

As I said, I'm sure the DLC itself is fine (cept adoption, burn in hell adoption, you horrible, horrible design idea), but for me? The content we're being given as DLC for Skyrim is a lot less than before, on par with the house plug-ins for Oblivio or equal in content to a FO DLC but requiring double the development time and cash. I don't wanna encourage this policy either.

I'll be back when quality and/or quantity seems back up to speed with what it once was.

Lower the flag, Ulfric, GStaff confirmed that a smaller team worked on this while the majority of resources were diverted elsewhere. This is just a small tidbit to make the wait easier.

At least, I think he confirmed it. Can I trust a post on the forums? Nah. I'll wait till he comes along and says something himself. Ignore this, then. Sorry Longknife.

Did you happen to read an official Beth announcement that it was going to be something completely different, by any chance?
Nope. How about you give me the link to the official Beth announcement that said it was going to be a stupid Sims addon?

Obviously the "big one" has yet to come. In the meantime, no one is forcing you to buy this one if you don't like it. Meh, Bethesda can't win.

I understood that.
Still feels like there's been a drop in DLC quality with Skyrim.
I mean, they ARE force-feeding us content that, according to Todd, was developed in a single week when they let devs make whatever they want. I say force-feeding because whether it seems relevant, doable, marketable or not, (adoption, that undead horse mount, vampire lords despite lore complications) it gets released. They shoehorn it in whether the idea is good or not.

That's what bothers me. They're not weeding out the bad gamejam ideas, but rather just releasing all of them, some as paid DLC. It feels very lazy to me and I don't want to encourage this policy.

I'm just comparing it to Oblivion, to be honest. You had Knights of the Nine, the houses, Mehrune's Razor, spell tomes, horse armor, and then Shivering Isles. Not necessarily in that order.

I like to imagine that the team at Bethesda suffers a severe personality switch when they work on Fallout and TES. Much like the personality switch of the writers of the quests and dialogue and their work on the books and notes.
