Game of Thrones Discussion

I read on Wikipedia that GRRM believes that only a strong double-standard can explain the lack of objections to an axe going through someone's head, while the male reproductive organ going into a woman causes aversion. He's right.

To be fair, I think it's more about the nonconsensual six than six in general. And some of the six seems a bit over the top.

Spoiler
Like Daenrys and her handmaiden.

Anyway, she says that the show is going to start being less true to the books and more of an "Adaptation."

I bet you they won't shave Arya's head in the show

Getting in to Dance with dragons, oh my god it's so good! Best one by a long shot. Not one bad chapter character, every single one is fascinating!

Spoiler
Just finished the first chapter with 'Reek.' Finding out it was actually theon was shocking! I can't wait to see how that turns out. I'm glad they're showing some of the Dreadfort and the Boltons.

Meh. War is dramatic, porm is boring. Sorry but it's true.

Some people were upset by the wedding night scene with Dany + Drogo, and actually mad when they found out that she wasn't forced in the books, at least that night. I thought the scene with Dany and Doreah was done very tastefully. It wasn't six, she was being taught how to va va voom. Dany was raised by servants and Viserys, she needed somebody to teach her how to make love. Where I thought the series went over the top was in the (IMO) unnecessary sixposition scenes. Basically almost anytime Ros showed up.

Point taken, but I was referring to Dany and Irri in Storm of Swords.

I thought Cersei and Lady Taena was the funniest and most ridiculous.

Hahaha well he certainly has a point! Though if there was no violence in media, I'd commit suicide.

Oh, right. Well I don't think that's over the top, either. Imagine those women in harems or medieval noblewomen who had a bedmate. That was a common practice and meant for security, chastity, etc. but I can easily imagine some playing doctor went on, especially in a case like that where a woman's political standing prevented her from either marrying or carrying on with a male lover. IIRC it even says that Dany is longing for Drogo, but there's no man around so loneliness and proximity... well, you know. I consider that pretty realistic.

I think Sansa is semi-delusional when it comes to her thinking that becoming a princess is how it is in the songs. She has it coming to her.

That's what makes her a tragic character though, you kinda see how her perception of the world changes at the series goes on. I thought she was a stupid child at first, then I just felt bad for her.

No your missing my point. six and porm are different. Anyways, what I mean is that people are offended by six on tv, but not violence. Violence isn't censored and six is, on most basic cable channels. War is dramatic in movies, but not in real life.... It's fast and chaotic.

No, I understand your point, but mine is that the collusion of genitals is pointless except to titillate and so there's less redeeming value than showing dramatic events. Plus it's simply wrong that people don't react to very graphic violence, they do and it's censored just as much.

Yes six is portrayed in movies and novels to excite and catch the viewers eye. But in Game of Thrones it's also used to show that six is part of the human experience, just like violence. The general population wouldn't mind seeing a head being decapitated from a persons body, but if a man or woman showed their genitals, people would react in a more shocking manner. Violence is censored yes, but six is censored more.

In the books that's true, in the TV series they use it primarily as a way to distract people from the fact that they're giving "boring" background information. Those are usually scenes that aren't in the books. The worst offender was that episode with Littlefinger talking about his mindset and foreshadowing himself as the bad guy while two prosttutes screamed and did body cavity searches in the background. Just... unnecessary.

I don't think six is censored more than violence. six is in almost every TV show or movie. Just not always graphic, and that's the same with violence. You might see pew pew and someone falls down with a little fake blood, but that's the equivalent of the "fade to black" six scene which is pretty ubiquitous.

Anyway, I guess it's only tangientially related to the topic. So... hurry up April 1st!!!

I finished A Clash of Kings and I'm up to page 100 of A Storm of Swords book one.

Still supporting the Starks.

Spoiler

At this point If I was Robb I would just march back north with my
army, crush Roose Bolton's rebellion and fight a defensive war from
there. They would most likely win that way.

I bought the hardcover. I wanted the paperback but the clerk at books a million said the paperback is to be released in June. I'm a long way from Dance with Dragons. I'm almost finished with Game of Thrones.

I'm about a 1/4th of the way through Clash of Kings and I'm loving it. By far my favorite series of books.

It makes me a little sad that they're going to move away from following the books directly in season two. From what I've seen of Season 1 they've followed the book rather closely, which I really really like. I hate when the movies are nothing like the books.

I am curious to see what they do with season 2. I don't see why they shouldn't follow them closely, it's not like they're lacking action or drama!

I was watching an interview with George R. R. Martin and be was saying how the show could go through the butterfly effect. He said the series on HBO is very loyal to the book, but a few things happen in the show that didn't happen in the book. So this could slowly turn the show into more of an adaptation.

Is there anyway to watch the first season without buying HBO or the Season 1 DVDs?

That's what I was afraid of :(

Looks like I'll have to wait a bit longer to watch season 1. Can't afford to drop $80 on DVDs at the moment.
