Follow the waterways, if any and plan your route according to it.

Plenty of water to stay hydrated and pssible to see waterside communities.

then loot, [censored] and pillage them for their food and valuables

A couple things that I would do in hardcoe mode to survive

stick to 3 guns or energy weapons and choose the ammounition that you want to use.
Pick an armor that you want to use maybe have a backup armor thats weighs less, Example from fallout 3, have Leather Armor as your main armor and have a Merc Charmer outfit as your backup.
If you can find purifed water stock as many as you can. Also pick the foods that you eat very carefuly. I heard that different foods make you dehydrate faster.
Find a container that doesn't have the items disappear in 3 days asap and use that area as your main base until you get a house.

Or just choose Energy Weapons since they have 5 ammo types.
Energy Cell
Microfusion Cell
Flamer Fuel
Electron Charge Package
Alien Power Cell

Honestly for a EW character all you really need to worry about are EC and MC.
I think it'll be way easier for them.

Or just stick to Melee or Unarmed.
They don't even need ammo.
But the healing over time might be a problem since they can't spam healing items now...

And Explosives are probably going to be the most powerful out of all classes but have even less ammo than EW...
So my suggestion is still EW.

Know when to fight your battles. Sometimes you just have to avoid a fight, or run away.
Don't start trouble in towns with a large guard population.
Keep Rad-Away handy, you'll be drinking a lot of irradiated water.
Find strategic stash points for items you don't need at the time. Collect them when you have a place to call your own, that serves as a central hub for your adventures.
Spend your caps conservatively.
Accept that death is inevitable. Don't get too frustrated when it happens.

3 TO 4 GUNS IN SURVIVAL MODE?!?!?!!?!?!?!?!

1. Long range - Sniper rifle, varmint rifle, hunting rifle
2. Automatic - Smg's or stuff like battle rifle or CAR
3. Close range - Shotguns
4. +1 slot - Minigun or light machine gun for those tough situations or a melee weapon.

Yeah but remember that there are a lot more ammo in this game than there was in fallout 3.
Chances are you're not going to end up with a crapload of ammo.
Maybe you have 20 rounds of .308 ammo and you run into 5 raiders.
You pick them off, takes you 12 rounds.
But you didn't get any .308 from them.
You didn't get any ammo from them which you can use in the weapons you brought.
And there's no guarantee that when you roll back into town you're going to get more .308 from the local weapon store.
He might not have any in.

So with guns you have to bring several with ammo for them just so you can survive.
You bring one or two weapons with you and you're probably going to run out of ammo for them very soon.
And then you'll have to go back and forth to town like crazy in order to buy more rounds for your weapons.

But this is just speculation.
Who knows.
Maybe we'll get showered with ammo again. (which is a bad thing)

try (if your good enought) pickpocketing and putpocketing (placing a landmine or a grenade) since it instantly kills. works with swamp lurks in PL DLC!
you get extra exp at the cost of an explosive that wouldnt normally kill the enemy

Don't consider four days ahead, plan the day ahead. You'll be able to get enough done in a day to make sure you survive instead of meagerly survive in the wastes for four days.

V.A.T.S only works on close enemys, so you need binoculars. But a sniper can work.... to late i came up with it. Tied again!
