Hipster Ponies Thread #-1

Post » Mon May 14, 2012 7:24 am

Partly avoiding the forums for the reason that I haven't played Skyrim and don't intend to until the summer so I don't want any spoilers. Partly because I got too lazy to post and then just ended up reading which eventually ended up with me not even visiting. Partly because I've been busy being a real student (I'm a whole 2nd year now!) and trying to maintain grades with a lifestyle that had any representation of last year (essentially copious beer and fifa) is difficult without internet forums, let alone with them. I actually checked because I was bored when I was procrastinating for my exams the other day...
Mate, I am so insanely jealous of you. I'd go back to uni just for the partying, if only it wouldn't make me one of those awful mature students desperately trying to reclaim their youth.
A lot of the stuff in here is really good  But since when is ska hipster music? Meh, your country is weird...

Anyway, since you banned rap and metal, I'm gonna use this thread to only talk about OFWGKTA and Nachtmystium. I reject your hipsterism and substitute my own.

Oh and http://sharkstooktherest.bandcamp.com/album/grounds-for-hearts-to-swell, because they're way underrated and some of the people in this thread might like them. I'm not going to say who, or describe them to you, though... Genres are too mainstream, just listen to it.
And where the actual [censored] have you been too?

Anyone else into http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x4xY4zImmP8? They're on my must-see live bands list, if ever they actually make it out of London.

I've been around, here and the other place. Spose I've not been so active recently but I never really left - didn't realise my relative absense had been noted. Uni work and [censored] have been dragging me down, and my laptop broke a while back, that's my excuse and I'm sticking to it.

That band you just posted was good... <--- Relavent to topic lol!!!!!!

Pearly Jam is one of my favorite bands, but its probably one of the most well known bands out there lol.
Yeah, how the hell are a grunge band hipster?

They are obscure today. Besides the band doesn't have to be completely obscure to be hipster. It's b/c it's "cool" to listen to them. Eventhough their music hasn't been the same since Vitalogy. My friends from highschool continued to listen to them into college even after Vitalogy.

They're not commercial anymore. Even back when I was in college and would listen to No Code or Vitalogy and I was picking up somoene they would be like "Who the hell is that?" I would say "PJ." Thier response was always, "I use to like them".

Don't kid yourself mate....they are a hipster band now.

Plus the guitarist and lead singer could totally get it. If you somehow, by some extraordinary circumstance, or by some unequivocal http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_-agl0pOQfs, manage to land a threeway when you go see them, undon3, I will personally, and without question, provided there is some kind of evidence, buy you and all of your friends alcohol for a night and fly out to wherever it is you're living at the time. I, sir, guarantee this.

Now, on a musically related note, I'm going to share some blues.
Sonny Terry & Brownie McGhee -http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=otgnkKGwIlo, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1_xnOhXIpHg
On a Jazz related note, anybody know any musicians who sound like http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=107dADrIVBk? Looove his style.

Also, in addition to Greatful Dead and Boston, listening to Blue's Traveler, and Widespread Panic gets me called a hipster...

I liked hey ocean, before MLP!
I really did.

Last week I was sitting in Teany (Moby's place) in Soho, NYC, sipping Ceylon tea (no milk, thankyouverymuch) and eating vegan coconut vanilla cake. I can't remember what music may have been playing in the background, but I think that pretty much solidifies my hipster credentials ;)

Would Bon Iver and My Morning Jacket be classified as 'hipster' music? Because I'm really digging the latest albums from both those acts...

Also starting to get into this up-and-coming Cincinnati-based band called Walk The Moon (look up 'Walk the Moon Anna Sun' for the song "Anna Sun" on YouTube - I wanted to post the link to the video, but there's a couple recent comments that are risque on there that I don't want to risk getting warned over being linked to)

Imo emo fans are pretty hipster, so here's a band that I feel sorry for because they're so much better than most, but seem to be not as popular :(

http://www.damezumari.com/docs/index2.html first.. That's what got me into them.

Speaking of that genre http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wnR5hP594Jo is also quite beautiful

I picked up the latest Star [censored] Hipsters album last week...

Let me first begin with the caveat that Stza is still a tit.

That said, the album is simply faultless. Particular highlights include... Well, every song.

Although in far more awesome news... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cAVhec3SRJg have reformed. Confirmed dates at Coachella, Roskilde, Way Out West, and Groezrock festivals, and a few more. And looking at the http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Groezrock#Saturday_28th_April, it's probably the best festival in the world.

I love them. It's too bad I can't have six with the sun, then I could be a Star [censored] Hipster, too.

If its classified as hipster music, it's not hipster music. Hacky sack is not hipster either.

Does or did Florence + The Machine count as a hipster band? I feel like they've definitely got the vibe down but... but... they're so mainstream!

I think of contemporary hipster music as 80s new wave revival, meets a hodge podge of other Instruments. Like Ra Ra Riot, or something. Or anybody that tries to sound like Joy Division.

Are we talking new wave or post punk, because those two get confused sometimes. If we are talking post punk, I guess http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BgoBRn2HQDo is hipster. Doubly so, considering how they are two decades old and were around before the term hipster was even in wide spread use.

More recently, I think the Yeah Yeah Yeahs could be fit under the hipster banner, at least when discussing http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=79RxzxHamsY and http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UEtCdrgN52Y&feature=BFa&list=PL6C8FFB82BC873D11&lf=results_main&index=13. I hate to follow the hipster stereotype, but they lost a lot of their zest once they signed on to a major record label with Its Blitz.

Can we change it to the 'music that isn't that popular' thread? I don't like calling things I enjoy 'hipster', it implies its only liked because few people listen to it.

Speaking of Joy Division sounding bands, anyone heard of http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IY1WcLPJMnk? They friggin rule and could be considered kinda hipsterish I guess.

I'm very stuck in the 90s. T shirt, converses, jeans, flannel. Oh and underwear.

You wear underwear? Pfft. That's so... passe. So... mainstream, buddy.

I don't want my question to get lost. :P Does or did Florence + The Machine count as a hipster band?

Never heard of them before, but I'm liking it so far. They honestly remind me more of http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TqhOVY58zIo than Joy Division, though. But that's probably just because they have a similar vocal style.

A little humour never harmed anyone. Besides, getting offended at silly little things is so mainstream.

Discovered this band a couple of days ago, I don't know if they qualify as hipster, but who cares anyway?

They have more stuff, but I've only listened to the EP collection.
