Hipster Ponies Thread #-1

Kicks his hacky sack to you
What's up, dude? So, like, I think we need a music thread that isn't rap or metal. This thread is for stuff like acoustic music, ska, reggae, old pop, and obscure bands. I'm a law major so, like, tack on a "but not limited to" after "stuff like."

Since I'm the TSG(thread starter guy, OP is way conformist) I'll kickstart this by sharing some bands. You probably never heard of them, they're kinda underground, the first is kinda chill but like punk too, it's hard to explain. The second is all chill.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AfkF30yPfK0
Here's my personal favorite band right now. They had a following in the UK but, like, never got noticed here in the US. I think us Americans have more of an affinity for consumerist media, you know?

I saw Frankie and the Heartstrings in Cambridge before Christmas. Obviously these guys were the supporting act. The headliners just aren't that interesting any more.

Freaking loved the first song! Maybe it's the utter lack of sleep but I laughed for like 5 minutes at the title. The second was good, but I feel a hint of acid is needed to enjoy it fully.

Yeah, Pepper's only good song was that one, in my opinion. Got all their albums and was sorta pissed about it. You really love Kalnokey, huh? He rules, I can't blame you. Besides MoMS, The Unicorns, Common Rider and TSPO I have all those band's albums, as well! Definitely going to be adding all of those bands to my playlist, now. Common Rider is freaking badass, and a ska instrumental band has been something I've looked for for a long time. Thanks, Lord Crow!

That was pretty good. I find videos where they show the lead singer's face the whole time and they're singing really strange. It seems hard to look casual and sing and not look weird.

Speaking of concerts, going to two ska concerts this month! One on the 15th, headliner is Llama Tsunami and all the other bands have pretty awesome names, too. Soooo pumped. Trying to drag people along with me, but I still have empty seats in my car. Lame!

Here are a couple cool bands, too.
Nerd pride + ska = http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YsNfYUPHt7Y
Nerd pride + hip hop/ska/rock? Well that = http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XvaFDqJleWM
Speaking of MC Lars, since you posted in this thread Chineapple, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PTbwCsjN4Ek
Finally, I'd like to share with you all, the greatest stoner band since Sublime, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0Rj9fNuEshw http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f5kGUqEBva4!

Oh dear - listened to that hipster girl song and it mentions Donnie Darko. I just brought that film up in another thread :ermm: Seems I may need to put down my thick framed glasses and step away from the vinyl selection - I'm in too deep.

That Skamaritans song was fun though. :)

Laughing at The Fratelli's being Hipster. Chelsea Daggers was like the most played song by 14-17 year olds in England whenever it came out.

I'd recommend http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bCxEWPLDg5c for some cool, very basic, acoustic music. His voice grates at first but the song has some great melodies ("And in the daarrrkk, we will take off our clothes"). The album it's off, "Airplanes over the Sea", is great. Do The Decemberists count as Hipster? They're moderately Hipster in the UK but I get the impression they're significantly more popular in the states. But anyway, they're a more dramatic, complex and (in my opinion) better version of Neutral Milk Hotel. They've yet to release a bad album although The Crane Wife 3 and Picturesque are the best.

Hah. Tounge-in-cheek or not, I just bought tickets to see them at the Great American Music Hall in April. God, that's going to be amazing.

I've gotten back into and have been digging pretty heavily lately Braids debut from last year, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=adhxSEjnBjA. Such wonderful sounds. I liked it when I first heard it, but it's a grower for sure.

EDIT: I just now noticed that threads can be tagged. lol @ the tags on this thread.

Since when were they considered Hipster? I've never heard anyone call them Hipster. They're not Hipster.

I'd recommend http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bCxEWPLDg5c for some cool, very basic, acoustic music. Most US Hipsters would advise against calling Neutral Milk Hotel, Hipster, seeing as the band and "Airplanes over the Sea" has picked up quite the cult following, that isn't just some niche of people anymore. Basically anyone who listens, or hears just a single song off that album, becomes addicted to the band, and starts praising the album like, back to as I said, a cult following. Back when it first came out, a friend of mine was talking about how they weren't that good, and Jeff Magnum's obsession with Anne Frank seemed weirder than it was nice or sympathetic. The next day, he was listening to The Communist's Daughter in his car. It's only gone on from there with people.

Also, The Decembers count as Hipster, and even more so since Colin Meloy's cameo appearance in the first season of Portlandia. Along with The Shins (who's lead singer James Mercer also appeared with Meloy on Portlandia,) and Sleater-Kinney/Wild Flag.

In the Aeroplan Over the Sea is still an amazing album though; there is a reason it's become so popular. I mean, its album artwork is practically the face of "hipster" indie music.

On the basis that The Decemberists are hipster then:

Edit: To continue the Neutral Milk Hotel discussion, I was introduced to it as the pinnacle of hipster music and while I don't really agree with that it is some really good music. It's more artistic and unconvential than most music I listen too, so I really enjoy it.

Don't get me wrong, I like some of the songs on the album myself, but the whole following and fanaticism behind the album is a bit off putting and really, after just one sitting of hearing the entire thing, I get tired of it and can't be bothered to listen to it fully for quite awhile. I think an indie band that's superior to Neutral Milk Hotel, and their album I can listen to multiple times in a row, is Andrew Jackson Jihad and their album "People That Can Eat People Are the Luckiest People In The World". Superior to Neutral Milk Hotel, I think.

And I agree the album artwork on "In The Airplane over the Sea", is the face of Hipster's music, but only because of their cultish followers.

I wouldn't say they're superior, but I do love most of what I've heard from AJJ, especially that album. Great driving album, really.

There's a mistake, though. Hipsters don't dance, they more or less just convulse.

Also, I love Neutral Milk Hotel, but didn't realize it until I listened through Aeroplane a few times.

Well to each his own, but after hearing Neutral Milk Hotel, I feel drained, and not in a good way. Andrew Jackson Jihad is superior in that, and their larger list of songs you can get different feelings with. Some are somber, others more uplifting, etc. Neutral Milk Hotel is just about some guys obsession with Anne Frank, and trying to be poetic about it in every song.

(Though Andrew Jackson Jihad did do a cover of Neutral Milk Hotel's "Two Headed Boy" which was good.)
