No hit detection makes Skyrim combat terrible

Are we talking about the same Skyrim?

Playing a pacifist in Skyrim is damned near impossible. That is, if you actually wanna do anything interesting.

I have a level 40 with zero kills.
She's done pretty much every quest thrown at her and has visited many many locations.

The few quests that require killing...those she can't do. There are not very many of those.

Try solving some of the quests without killing. "Not interesting" doesn't even come close. Killing is the easy way.

Maybe because combat is not such a huge part of TES series? But nevertheless, you're full of crap, I'm sorry, but Skyrim's combat is really well done. Show me one sandbox 1st person action RPG that has such a good battle and you win, but you really can't.
God knows I think Skyrim has a LOT of flaws, but battle is not one of them, not even close.

Fallout 3 and New Vegas?

Combat is a huge part of skyrim. And for me all you do is hack at the enemy until their health is gone, which i find repetitive. regardless to whether there is another game like it. But they deserve praise for improving it from oblivion.

re: FPS's..... did most of those mentioned actually have "locational damage" (arms, legs, everything), or did most of them just have BOOM! HEADSHOT!?

(Yes, the head is a "location". But headshots=awesome isn't really the same as a full location damage system.)

Now, that new sniper game (Sniper Elite 2?) looks like it has a whole bunch of location damage stuff. Considering that it shows gratuitous "x-ray" killcams of whatever horrific damage your shot happened to do. (Apparently. I've not actually watched one of the youtube videos showing it. Sounds pretty gross. :yuck: )

Somone mentioned KoA's combat upthread. I've been playing the latest KoA, and while I find it's combat fun and entertaining, I really wouldn't want that in a TES game. Skyrim is just a darker, grittier rpg and having everyone jumping around during combat would just seem silly.

JKA had leg shots, body shots, arm shots, and head shots. And that's a very old game that used the very old Quake 3 engine.

Mount and Blade has head shots, body shots, and leg shots. And that's from an indie developer with very limited budget.

Someone mentioned Killzone 2 and 3.

Besides, all this stemmed from Bukee stating that nearly no game has location based damage (Initially it was, and I quote, "every game" that had no location based damage). There are so many games that do (FPS or otherwise) so I called him out on that one.

Now see I'm not even gonna bother discussing this with you any more cause your being a dike! And I don't care if a Mod sees that I called you a dike!! My point was, graphically, game play and everything in between wise games have come a long way, and I'm happy with that. Maybe if you played a game from the 80's or 70's for a good 10 years then maybe you would understand my point, but seeing how your spoiled with what you have you cannot see it for what it is.

Lets pretend I haven't played very old games just because I'm not absolutely content when a modern game blows a very retro (Ancient in some cases) game out of the water. Most modern games blow very retro games out of the water. Even the really bad ones. That doesn't mean that I will always have a case of satisfaction when a modern game comes out and it's way better than a ping pong Atari game.

Modern games aren't reviewed based on how good they would be in the 70s or 80s. Hate to break it to you.

I've seen it brought up at a point of reference and used in some examples but no one is advocating for KoA type combat in Skyrim. At least as far as I know.

Anyhow, surprised the thread didn't reach the post limit. It usually does. o.O... O.o...

Sort of like Fallout eh?

In fallout 3, if you crippled an enemies leg, they would be staggering towards you, and if they crippled YOUR leg, your move speed would be way slower.

Fallout 3 and New Vegas?

:dead: Those two are shooters and their focus is shooting at stuff. You can't really level up much without killing enemies.

I can't even to tell you how bad combat is in this game. It feels repetitive and kills immersion. Every time I shoot an arrow or melee someone it's the same reaction, same animation, same flinching.

Combat is a huge part of TES and am suprised that Bethesda still can't make combat decent.
A sophisticated hit detection system would make combat so much more enjoyable, if I shoot an arrow to someones leg I want to see them limping and acknowledging that they are injured.

I want to see that every hit I make has an effect on the enemies. I want to feel my attacks actually doing damage.

One word: killcams.

Did you even consider the sheer awesomeness of those, before criticizing the combat system?

I adore the combat in Skyrim due to the killcams being something I have never seen in TES.

Killcams make everything ok.

I do see your point, though.

Elder Scrolls never had dragons or shouts before either.
there's a reason for that. the dragons were all dead or in hiding. and i reckon that they would love the huge mountains of Skyrim.

Go play Oblivion.
Then say Skyrim has bad combat.

I think Morrowind would be a better example of horrible combat.
