We had a cat with a vicious purr.

Lol, that's a very common misconception. Most claymores (at least, those used for actual combat) weighed 5-7 pounds. But to answer your question, I have several katanas that could do the trick, as well as a couple of broadswords. I like turtles swords.

I think even that might be a little on the heavy side: I have two claymore-size swords, one weighing just over two pounds, the other around four.

I've got a shotgun nearby, and I left my girlfriend a knife at her house just in case. I'm looking in to getting a pistol.

A Super-Soaker 5000 filled with Lysergic Acid Diethylamide.

So... your ammo would cost thousands upon thousands of dollars, and in a few hours might make them hallucinate (if it gets absorbed through the skin)? May as well fill it up with bleach or something cheap lol.

Same with the US really. It's a massive and thriving industry, but there is plenty of anti-gun sentiment flooding the country. I know all about that story, don't need to tell it to me. I read about it a long time ago, scary the way the government wants us all to be so weak and helpless.

In this day and age the army is far past anything a citizen group could do, even with state of the art guns. Gun control has its merits, especially for small arms. If we did have another civil war, what use would a scrappy group be against a well trained military with tonnes of weapons and equipment?

According my my maths, at say $20 a dose, roughly 500 micrograms per dose, and 1L = roughy 1kg, that comes out to... 2 million doses, or roughly $40,000,000 per super-soaker.

When threatened, I ruffle my feathers in an attempt to make myself look larger. If that fails I resort to talons.

I'm an out of work cabinetmaker so I have tools. If someone broke into my home, doesn't really happen around here, then I'd be able to use:

3 hammers, heaviest is a 20 ounce
2 mallets, one wide, one thin
an awl
3 exacto knives
a set of chisels
a set of files
many screwdrivers
a large metal ruler
a folding knife
a large toolbox

lets face it, nobody wants to steal anything from an out of work cabinetmaker anyway so Id say you are safe.

I have a baseball bat and two big dogs that are very protective of their awesome owner. If that doesn't work, there are kitchen knives, bottles, lamps, chairs, toasters...

Ohhh... I also have a metre-long wrench.

where I live it is apparently against the law to defend yourself with any type of weapon. Even if your home is being fire bombed.
This

It doesn't stop me and my dad from have a mantled crossbow in his room and I've got my papa's boot dagger from when he was in the army and a metal baseball bat. So unless that trespasser has something to trump the crossbow, the house remains in Fern control

Even with the stupid law in place I'd still willingly fight someone, to the death if needs be, to defend what is rightfully mine. Glad though that it's getting changed to allow some defense though, "http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Castle_doctrine#Duty-to-retreat" should be used here.

I like the story about the burglar who fell onto a stack of knives through the hole in the roof he made, and then sued (and won against) his victim.

I live in a semi-high criminal area...lets just say I have enough to make someone seriously sorry if they tried a home invasion here...and I'm always here...99% of the time.
Have also been looking at getting an outdoor four camera security system.

I installed a fake surveillance camera (it swivels and looks intimidating, and that's it).

Two days and someone stole it. I live in one of the "dodgier parts" of Cairns.

Aquan, there are software programs that you can use to set up a webcam CCTV, if the real deal is too expensive for you. I forget the name of the software, but a quick google search should be able to find it for you.

There are DVR's that you can access on a computer via the internet...as well as a g4 handheld from anywhere. I would likely just use my trusty old 40 lb VGA monitor @ the DVR output in the spare room.

@JagerTharn...I think I'm able to mount them high enough and concealed enough not to worry too much...unless somebody really really wanted to get at them.

I doubt the law says you can't defend yourself with a weapon, more likely it says defense isn't a valid reason for carrying a weapon in public.

Almost everywhere has the same rule, that if you perceive a threat to your life, then use of deadly force is justified, however, this is not a defense against the charge of carrying a weapon, only of using it in self-defense.

Depending on where you live, there are one of two broad types of laws that apply:
  • If someone's on your property, and you reasonably suspect they're out to do you harm, you can attack them in order to deter them and/or get them off your property.
  • Your actions must be proportional to the intruder's actions.
    • If he's just trespassing, you ask him to leave; if he doesn't, you call the cops.
    • If he takes a battery or a pencil, you can attempt to take it back from him, but if you attack him you will probably the one to go to jail.
    • If he steals a TV, you can punch him a few times.
    • If he tries to make off with an amount of goods equal to 90% of your life's possessions, you can do pretty much whatever you have to, to prevent him from succeeding.
    • In the same vein... if he attacks you, your act can only be of such potency that it halts the attack. You cannot then continue to beat the crap out of him.

A katana, and as a last resort I can throw ponies at them.

My ex-brother-in-law actually chased a home intruder for 6 blocks with his Katana. The guy wet him self he was so scared.

Most often in the case of burglars, they can be scared away rather easily unless they are extremely desperate, stoned or stupid or any combination thereof.

The law where I live is actually fairly vague on this. It is accepted practice that if someone enters your home uninvited, especially at night, that any amount of force is acceptable.

And honestly, if someone broke into my house at night, I wouldn't know their intentions, or if they are armed or what not. I'm going to give one vocal order to leave. if it is not immediately followed, bullets will fly, bats will swing, or what ever children's toy I can throw that's handy will be thrown. Oh, and don't forget the dog.
