Interface Change (PC)

The UI is appalling, they seemed to have done no optimisation for the mouse and keyboard at all. Just look at how log it takes you navigate the skills menu. Very disappointing.
You suggest you're a PC gamer, but you don't use hotkeys? Fallacy right there, man. Unless you're saying it takes too long to push a single key. Not that the normal way to getting there is exactly slow - I mean, come on, pushing TAB and moving the mouse up takes a long time?

Why on earth would anyone use Flash for anything they didn't absolutely have to? As bad as Oblivion's UI was, the XML system was superbly done (though I know the person responsible for that left Bethesda some time ago).

Highlight the item you want to hotkey and press 1 to 8 to do so.

You sir win at the internet. That helps a TON. It just went from awful to manageable. ;)

The problem with using .swf files for a UI is that most of the time (when used in games) the format is slightly different (or hugely different for that matter). Meaning a heck of a job to decrypt and re-encrypt them. Beyond that wouldn't be too hard, assuming one knows a thing or two about flash.
The witcher 2 also has that kind of UI and some people have been modding it. So let's hope they come to Skyrim to make everything better for the users who like their Eyefinity candy. I don't understand how Bethesda didn't anticipate that PC users are more and more likely to use several screens on their computer. We are not limited to the pitiful one screen of the consoles!

Perhaps we can use UDK for editing Skyrim sfw menu files also?

XML is cumbersome to say the least. Quite the performance hog too. I'm on the fence about flash, but I can see why they went that way.

Hmm... might have to take a look at this. Any ideas if this is pure Flash, or if this is Flex-based (one of my major skills is Flex programming)...

I don't know yet. I didn't make it past character creation before getting angry. Just like Oblivion... :banghead:

It's clearly made for gamepads. If they make a list, why can't I click it's items? Why show them at all if I have to go through each and every one to get to the specific item I'm looking for? Do they PROGRAM the game with a pad too???? I'll look into this stuff, but I know nothing about flash.

AzSteve,

It's swf files.

This! So this! It's my only major complaint about the game right out of the box that I'm almost willing to stop playing and wait for a mod to fix before even thinking about going on. Such a PITA, I mean really who thought this would be a good thing on the PC?

Account issues sorted. :)

Looking at my PM's, I see the UI stuff is handled with Flash/Actionscript 2.0. In theory this is good news for modding, as you have a lot more control now. You can have info on items you hover over and so on. This was not possible with the old XML lists.

It doesn't have to be a good thing, it just has to work. It's a good thing for gamepad users obviously... It's a clickfest for sure.

I'm not sure how to approach this. Is it even possible without spending money on software?

So true, any time one wants to display something in the XML UI that wasn't already accessible it required scripting or OBSE-ing to 'inform' the XMLs on this extra bit of data.

One of my (new) biggest complaints about the UI is that buffs/debuffs no longer show up as icons.
How much longer do I have on my armor spell? Am I diseased?

Better stop everything & go into the Magic section of the UI to check :swear:

I have no clue about flash, but when I opened them with a flash decompiler it seemed to work (I could view the contents, scripts etc). So I guess they aren't protected?

That's my issue at the moment. I'm a teacher, and have free access to all the Adobe stuff for non-commercial purposes (such as mods), but I can't find any free swf to fla converters. Still not sure what I'm meant to use for the GFX files either.
