JaySuS Mods for TES V: Skyrim

read again... then read what i said again :wink:

that wikipedia article doesnt make it really clear and kinda confusing imo by stating its "tougher" than conventional alloys... but tougher in what sense? read on and youll see that they, just like common glass, have the total problem of forces applied in another direction but their thickest part (sorry cant really explain that but by saying sheer and lateral forces... if laterial is the correct term, only know the german one, querkraft and it often falsely translated as sheer force which is actually sheerkraft), for example if you had a sword made of amorphous alloy you could totally stab someone with it, but hit someone with and it would, also totally, break in two

"Liquidmetal alloys offer superior mechanical properties compared to other highly engineered materials. Compared to crystalline metallic alloys, Liquidmetal is much more resistant to permanent deformation from impact, and 3 times more elastic or resilient"

as i understand it they just coat conventional alloy with amorphous ones to give it a more resitant surface?
well i doubt it would work that well, for one would sharpening your blade destroy the coating and allow rust and the like to "crawl" underneath the coating and for another would it not make the blade more sturdy or anything, it would just keep it nice polished finish for longer, i could imagine that being useful on a shield maybe depending on how easy it breaks when backed up with a conventional alloy

what could work and is being tested afaik are amorphous alloys laced with fibers to give them more strength against lateral force, kinda like reinforced concrete... maybe elfen hair inside their glassy stuff ^_^ ...so why do i not need elfen hair when i forge a glass weapon? :D
wouldnt work for a blade tho anyway, those fibers just "delay" the complete destruction of structures, like for example if youre in a building and a steel beam breaks it takes time for it to fully break, it bends slowly until it reaches the point of no return giving people time to escape (yes, acrhitecture actually pays attention to that stuff alot), your sword blade would probably splinter like a fiber glass fishing rod or somin

ah ok...
wait...
first i thought that this would be against my view buuut, titanium is rather unelastic in comparision to steel or iron, so amorphous alloys are great to replace titanium but still no steel or use for a sword... mmh... wait...
gosh this article svcks lol--- first it says their liquidmetal broke alot due to shear forces, then out of nothing somehow magically it became three times as elastic as crystaline alloys (which?).... as tests with bouncing steelballs proofed (erm...lol?)... then on the sideline they say it was three times as elastic as titanium, which is a crystaline alloy but svcks as in regards to elasticity...
now they make baseballbats out of it... wonder how they fixed the shear force problem there, a baseball if you dont hit it on the sweet spot in the perfect moment will create shear force i think... not sure atm, too tired to think it through XD, well maybe they have some kind of structure inside the bats that transfers the force elseweyr...

well anyway, all that aside... those are "glasses", but metals still, its not green see through glass like we got it in TES ;)

but interesting topic i must admit ;)

I remember reading long ago that the glass weapons of Elder Scrolls are made of something similar to obsidian. Probably it's just a reference to the Game of Thrones "dragonglass" - however, subjectively strictly speaking, I don't like the glass weapons of elder scrolls, I've got in Skyrim Grimsever and Chillrend and they both hang on some walls in my houses... Steel is steel is steel - fantasy or not.

Coming back to another thing you mentioned earlier, the usage of iron and steel ingots: the bloomeries and (later) blast furnaces were technically producing iron with different degrees of carbonation, which was later mixed in with steel, thus making the beautiful pattern-welded blades, until the invention of "real steel", when homogenous blades started to be mass-produced (10th century?).

In all truth, game-balancing-wise, I think it's safe to consider iron ingots for the LC steel and steel ingots for the HC steel - it makes sense (to some level), plus people won't get too confused by tech details... ;)

Did I say pattern-welding? :)

Cheers,
PKR.

@pattern welding
you can get that even with just one type of steel, but the idea of pattern welding has two reasons,
for one do you get the properties of HC and LC steel (if you do no overdo it) and for another do you homogenize the metal itself piece by piece, every fold or twist getting closer to "perfect" iron age industrial steel, which you had to do sometimes especially if you came from japan or scandinavia cause the natural iron ressources there were crap at the time in comparision to lets say the alps where the celts dug it out

@making it complicated
heck id love to turn that thing in a real swordsmihing mod if it wouldnt be so ridiculously tideous, get iron ore, some charcoal, melt it down, build a hilt (stag antlers?), a crossguard, a pommel, some fittings, forge a blade piece by piece, simplifying the whole process but not too much... then assemble your blade at the workbench, randomizer and smithing level playing a role in the outcome or failure
sadly the amount of possibilities is a bit crazy and id have to make like a million different swords or somin with the way the game and the smithing menu works XD
i kinda liked how it was done in gothic 2, you heat the lump of ore, you hammer it, you quench it, you grind and polish it... was a bit more realistic i think than what we have in skyrim... no idea how you make leather armor in a forge -.-

@pattern welding: couldn't say it better. The Halstatt area always provided best iron in Europe; however, in Scandinavia there were decent minerals, except that the coal was pretty crappy...

@complexity: yup, when I saw first the forge in Whiterun, I thought: "finally, forge, anvil, bellows - we're going Gothic style", but no, it was just many things in one place doing one thing... :) I like your idea and I think it'd have a decent following - I wonder how possible would that be with the CK. I wouldn't touch the whole smithing system, leave vanilla to its own (the Lost Art of Blacksmithing is already doing a lot in improving things there), but I'd like to see it done only for your swords.

Hey Jay, awesome mod though a pretty big issue at the moment with it, I posted this on your comments section on the nexus, but in case it gets lost:

I've had your mod since your first version and have always noticed crashes here and there, but the past month or so in very particular spots in game the game crashes %100 of the time, I've tried deleting a lot of texture mods and to try and get it sorted, reinstalling the game, but tonight I tried deleting your mod thinking it would have nothing to do with the problem, and the game stopped crashing in these spots straight away. It really svcks that this happens because this by far my favorite mod, do you have any idea whats causing this?

I really don't want to delete this mod! The troube areas I've marked on this map, hope if you've got enough time you could take a look at this and see if you get these crashes too.

@painkiller
technically it wouldnt be a problem with the cs, maybe even with skyedit, but it would just be too much work, and also bloat the smithing menu to a size unimaginable... 42 swords now... each consisting of pommel, blade, hilt and crossguard, 4!x42=Y or somin lol would be the amount of models and weapons id have to build and recipes to add... too many for that kind of menu and model style, well at least possible without crazy scripts that outrun script line limits lol, might have been easier with somin like FONVs upgradable weapons

@weirdname
ya well sorry, i can only guess that its an issue with your pc or game or somin, unrelated to my mod tho xcept you have a really really slow pc or use a savegame from a jaysus sword version prior V08 i think and would have lost a blade that doesnt exist anymore at those locations... or a bandit picked it up and it makes it way through skyrim... from bandit to bandit... crossing your path from time to time... leading to a crash cause it doesnt exist XD ...would be kinda awesome to say the least tho

@JaySuS Swords
V11 is getting closer... just wish the CK would be here alforkingready for the leveledlist quest scripts -.- BEEETTHHHYYYY!! for lokis sake hurry up hun...

JaySuS Swords and Weapons of the Third Era are the best looking weapon mods out there. The detail is just simply amazing. I love how your work isn't just 1024 paint-overs and actually different textures in 2048, not to mention all new models. Thank you for your hard work on JaySuS Swords. They actually fit in and aren't outrageous.

This mod is getting better and better.

This dragon spiney things are great, one can see they are both the work of a professional as well as of an artist. With the CK coming soon, I hope you'll find a way to make the player actually EARN them, instead of just gathering 5 dragon bones and crafting them. Some lost recipes, maybe, or some uber boss to fight with over them?

I see that since V09 it has leveled list support? That's great!
That means swords might appear on people (if high enough level), right?

Awesome :)

And with a merged patch I can combine it with the Amroury of Tamriel if I'm correct?

Just want to say great work!

In regards to "glass" in the elder scrolls(now it is called malachite which is even dumber tbh. It has divine properties and is from a divine being(Lorkhan). For all intents and purposes let us just say it can be made incredibly sharp and is very durable. It really is just a case of "it's magical". So if you want to work with it as a medium for your incredible blades feel free to use it. It is Lore friendly and it makes sense in terms of the Elder Scrolls universe.

Just an FYI. Currently duel wielding Dragonbrand and Azurbrand as a Dunmer. Thanks!

@levelled lists
well it has lvl list support but via a script that you gotta customize and run via the console, it doesnt conflict with any other mod nor overwrite any, however other mods loaded after it could alter the lists and hence make my changes void
its a tad complicated atm but its the only way without conflicts currently as long as we dont have a CK

@getting them
yup, thats my intention once i get my fingers on a CK...
until then youll need a bunch of dead dragons and a bunch of emeralds and soul gems i guess for the glowing effect of the gems... they pulsate ;)
should make up for it at least a lil

@albino
did you modify dragonbrand to be 1handed? cause otherwise dual wielding it would be kinda hard to accomplish ;)

too many names with dragon in them id say... getting even more now -.-
damn skyrim and the awesomeness of dragons :smile:

may i at this point mention my latest spoil...
i had just outfitted Eola and That Old Crazy Blade Dude (TOCBDr) and we were venturing forth in our conquest of the wilds, bringing civilization even to the farthest reaches of the vast planes and high mountain ranges of the north, Eoala was just commenting on her pretty face whilst i silently listened, my eyes always open for tasty red berries, to our feet a day's freefall drop down to the magnificently lush forests below creating a stark contrast to the chilling white and grey surrounding us at this altitude, TOCBDr mumbeling something even a Greybeard couldn't have possibly understood when suddenly that all too familiar, bone feeezing, flapping sound pounded my ears and the ground shoock, it was as if everything happened in slow motion, "CLIFFRACER!" TOCBDr screamed and Eoloa shook her head in resignation having reminded TOCBDr once too often since our adventure began that cliffracers were extinct since the nevarine crisis, something that his mad mind obviously never bothered to register.
Eoala, TOCBDr and me all summoning out fire Astronachs at once, all three Astronarchs moving foward, following the all emerging shadow ahead and preparing to fire their fireballs, TOCBDr's lightning magic truck the sky and arrows followed close behind, seemingly without even looking up from neither, Eola nor me, but we knew where the mark was, the dragon returned to attack us on our narrow mountainpath, carefully taking aim we awaited him, the Astronarchs slinging their balls of fire foward, followed by the combined, ranged might of me and my heroic friends our foe was struck but immediately answered with a breath so cold it was cold enough to make a nords piss freeze before he could even think of soiling his throusers, only a dragon of immense power like we had not yet encountered before could have had such a breath, the astronarchs couldnt possibly stand that kind of damage and exploded in a ball of flames,
my shield in hand, taking a step foward, bending my knees lightly, i lowered my swordpoint to my right behind, holding is loosely by its hilt, Eola and T. following as if twins,
here it came, a dragon, had it been friendly it would have been a miracle of nature to behold, but its fierce scream was only a slight notion of its true intentions and what was to come.
his cold spray engulfed us as we charged foward to meet our adversary in open battle,
TOCBr lunged foward to my left, only to be shrugged away against the mountains side by the dragons claw, a large flesh wound cleaving in his side,
Eoalo heroicly pierced the dragon's right side using her smallsword as anchor to jump atop the beast, but the dragon, not stupid as one might think after having only faced wolves and maybe a sabercat if adventourous throughout a lifetime, took the air again, Eoala letting go her grip and descending towards her doom,
without hesitation or better thought i ran towards her, readying my telekinesis spell i cast it foward in her direction, no time, no time, to aim, i only hit her by buttocks and Eola was pushed against a rock, it hadnt worked as planned but at least she didnt fall to the abyss below, her legendary nightingale armor, forged by my very own hand in the skyforge of Eolund to perfection, and Eola's natural resilence were enough to save her life i hoped.
But i had other worries now than to look after my friends constitution, the dragon was returning to deliver a final blow...
i could see that Eola had seriously wounded him yet and he looked slightly broken with one wing flapping out of rythm, i took Eoals Bow that i saw laying on the ground and took aim,
i wanted to go for the head but decided for the other, seemingly healthy wing, shot, he shivered in midair, his wings retracting, it was as if he froze in midair and he crashlanded, sliding head first towards our group,
i had to protect the others, storming foward with my still tightly gripped shield i stormed towards this beast of dimensions worthy a Ragnaroek of its own,
when it impacted on the small mountain path it didnt land, it carved a gigantic hole into the ground but i took all my bravery and lunged with my shield, trusting in the shield training i had received as a young squire back in High Rock, magic wasnt all we learned back then,
it's beak, my shield, we shamshed, i only felt a pain in my back as i landed, my shield badly bent and damaged, i could barely let it go whilst i tried to understand where i was, but i had no time to enjoy the scenery or even regain full sense when i was hit by ice cold breath, chilling the very bones in me, accompanied by a shriek that deafened my ears,
barely concious i turned, stumbled towards the gleaming light and screamed...
i screamed as i never had before, my echo, reflected of the mountains walls, rippling through the air, rocks crumbeling, trees breaking, i fell to the ground.
snow and blood cluding my sight i rolled my eyes foward, i saw the light, but it getting smaller, became darkness and i could, with my last sight see the dragon roll backwards, and over the cliffs edge towards its doom...
i awoke when i smelled something familiar...
Eoala was sitting on my chest smiling childishly and holding a piece of grilled dragon bacon in front of my face...
"After you were out some mysterious Argonian called De-Eus Ech-s cambe by and, like a miracle was a master in healing magic, he saved the three of us, we gave him some of the dragons bones as a thanks, he said somin about forging a sword he just learned about. Anyway Hun, enjoy the bacon, we still gotta find that flute, tomorrow morning we rideee..."

@TheChan
polycount is

1hsword 9,2k
1h axe 6,2k

...so yeah... "fairly" high hits the mark XD ...in comparision to vanilla ~1k and my other swords ~1-2k
but then i didnt make that mod for a console of the last decade but contemporary dish washers...
