Keybinding Issues

LOL, by all means. I could use a good laugh right about now. :)

EDIT: Well actually, since I LOL'd, I guess I should say I could use *another* good laugh right about now. :P

LOL. Glad you enjoyed that. I sure as hell enjoyed the image it produced. :P

Well, glad to see I'm not the only one righteously pissed that customizing the keyboard means I don't get to use all the features. I'm just another player that uses ESDF because it's closer to touch typing. I guess that means I don't deserve to get to favorite anything.

Whatever marketing bozo decided it was OK to ship with this problem should be fired.

>Bump<

Just posting to add my 2cents of disappointment. Please Devs, get this fixed. I'm playing with WASD, but god I hate it. I keep accidently hitting other keys b/c my fingers aren't used to playing on that side of the keyboard. Not to mention i'll take my hand off for a second and find myself back on the numberpad trying to move before I realize nothing is happening and have to move back again. Grrrr.

My keyboard has separate arrow keys (4) between the numpad and the QWERTY keys. That's what I decided to use for now, and so far I haven't encountered problems using those. However, it's apparent they didn't even provide proper inputs for the numpad keys, because if you assign Num Lock to as a hotkey, it calls it 0x45 instead of Num Lock. The game knows which button I am pushing, but they never added in a contextual name for it like the other keys have.

LOL. Glad you enjoyed that. I sure as hell enjoyed the image it produced. :P

Again. If you're wanting to use the NUMPAD simply follow these steps...

1. Download AHK (Auto Hot Key) - Google is your friend on this

2. Once installled open NOTEPAD and copy / paste the following...

#NoEnv
SendMode Input
SetWorkingDir %A_ScriptDir%

Numpad7::q
Numpad8::w
Numpad4::a
Numpad2::e
Numpad6:: d (Delete the SPACE before the 'd' and this text in the brackets)
Numpad1::alt
Numpad5::s
Numpad3::tab
NumpadDot::j

----------------------------------

3. Save file as Skyrim.ahk AFTER tweaking desired NUMPAD layout (Simply edit the copy / pasted material while keeping the same format)

4. Run the script.

5. ENJOY THE GAME

________________

If this doesn't work for you after following the steps... you screwed up somewhere along the line. If it works for most of us it will work for you. Go back and find your mistake(s) .

Doing all that above took me literally 2 minutes when I did it because of a short / helpful post someone made on page two.

Complaining is valid in this case... however there is nothing stopping you from enjoying the setup you normally use due to AHK. Take the few minutes to learn.

I found this which should be some good news:

This is the way of it, I'm afraid. We weighed the clarity of swapping out the button help with whatever the user had mapped versus the enormous amount of video memory required to load up every possible piece of button art every time you entered the Inventory, and speed/memory won out.

That is as planned. Basically, the fall-back logic for the user remapping their keys around is to try to match the new anologue. In the menu, 'F' is Favorites, but in-game, it's Toggle POV. So, the menu uses the Toggle POV key to favorite/unfavorite. Ideally, you'd be able to remap menu keys separate from gameplay keys, but just one of those "I wish I had more time" things...

Anywho, thanks for the mapping info! I'll track this down today.

So it looks like they might have a fix. For me, mapping the POV to Mouse 3 made it impossible to select favorites. I re-bound POV to the 'End' key and now I can use that to select favorites.

My current workaround involves a programmable mouse with 2 thumb buttons and a macro editor.

I've got WASD in default, Q: favs, E: use/take item, R: sheath/take all. Bottom row, Z-B, are all quick menus. Then I have shout and sprint bound to the mouse.

It's not pretty, but it works.

Meanwhile the UI is not THAT bad, now that I've gotten used to it. It's far below standards of PC gaming, but I bought this knowing it was essentially a port. It's just depressing to see how little the industry cares these days about PC gamers. We're just not worth it to them, I guess. Clearly they put a lot of time and effort and art into making this game, I've been quite impressed with everything so far (sans PC UI). But when the decision was made to offer it to PC gamers they went with the fastest and cheapest options available. They simply said, "Sure, market it to the PC gamers too, but don't waste a [censored] dime doing it."

Not to bash the game itself (it's quite good), but yeah, I'd also like to voice my disapproval at the hastily-cobbled-together UI. If I remap my use and sheath/draw buttons to Mouse4 and Mouse5 (as I'm sure many other gamers do) I can't use several functions in the menu. That's just shoddy design by Bethesda. I mean, surely someone in the QA team must have picked up on that?

Here's hoping Bethesda fixes it in a future patch, I don't think it's that difficult.

With AHK at least I can do my first steps and now I can go in for the other topics like mouse sensitivity, FOV etc.

It's so disappointing that Bethesda not even stoop to come here and say "we're sorry and tryin to fix this problem as fast as possible".
Do they read this at all? Is it just us kickin our heels here while Bethesda is busy countin the bucks we paid for a bug collection?

Most of all, I hate the fact, that I cannot take the box, bring it back to the shop, and fetch another copy in 1 or 2 months when most of the bugs ar patched and the game is halfprice...

And i did the brilliant thing of pressing ESCAPE during a bind key operation, which is commonly known as "Skip this and choose blank as key" but ESC was assigned, i choose another key for the action, and now i cannot use ESCAPE to go back in menus!

My question for Bethesda is: have any of your new GUI developers ever played a normal FPS game before?

I can't use my favourites menu AT ALL.

I think it's because I binded the F key as something else, and binded favourites as X using a Razer Nostromo, but even when I press F on the keyboard still nothing happens!

Please help!

Atm, best u can do is to delete/rename the controlmap.txt (i.e. start with default settings) and use AutoHotKey.

Or did u want Bethesda to help u? :whistling:

What specially bugs me is, ven if you're able to rebind all the keys, your still stuck to A, D, R and TAB in the menus.

New Vegas had the same problem and it needed a NVSE mod to get rid of it.

Wait what ?

It is fairly easy to generate textures at runtime and in this case its enough to generate/modify a texture WHEN the CONTROLS change, There is no need for the VRAM requirements to increase at all. The number of actions are always the same and there is no need to keep the default button textures in RAM or VRAM when they are no longer needed. (Heck, given the trivial design of the "button art" you could even render custom buttons on the fly from only a few basic shapes and normal text rendering, The "enormous" amount of additional VRAM required can be counted in kilobytes on one hand in the worst case and it would be trivial to almost eliminate button VRAM usage at a very insignificant cost to UI render time. (Drawing 2-3 "button" hints on the fly using a texture containing the corners and edges of the buttons shouldn't even add 1ms to the total render time).

I can accept that the tooltips don't update though, but not being able to bind some actions to the mouse without breaking things completely is not acceptable. (I always have activate / draw weapon on my mouse side buttons which causes problems) (i think i will grab autohotkey and solve it by using the numpad 1,4 instead but it pains me a bit to have to do that)

I made a new account just to add in my 2 cents. Fix the interface and controls!!, we need to be able to remap everything and the interface needs to be pC friendly , ie let us click on stuff , and make hot keys :S

ESDF Player here. Promised myself I wouldn't bother with Skyrim for at least a couple of months, caved anyway.

Wish I hadn't bothered. Back to L.A. Noire until this is sorted.

Left handed player here. Installed the game, was going to get ready to keybind and... I can't. Incredible. Please, Bethesda, add some left handed tester next time, or try to work with some guy that likes to play PC games. Probably they tested everything with an XBOX360 controller.

Really, really, really sad. Someone at Bethesda should have a huge talk with the QA guys, because it's disappointment after disappointment, after disappointment.

Console players are the ones that are paying them the most money so support goes in this order:

1. Consoles
2. Handheld platforms
3. Cellphone playforms
4. Some platform I'm forgetting about
5. PC

They just started fixing things for the console so wait in line!

just another lefty rant

in my mind, after reading the majority of the posts on here, im beginning to think that this might be an issue in relation to the num pad and the numbers above the letters.

No, because I'm having issues (can't pick a book that's being read for example) and I don't use the numpad. I use the 4 arrows.
