Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning Thread #6

Post » Sun May 13, 2012 5:18 pm

I just want to confess my utter noobish stupidity, which can rear it's head even after many years of gaming and gaming related stuff.

I had moved on to Detre and having a much tougher time, was in a cavern for a quest early in the zone and getting hammered. To the point where I finally died, a feat I had held off pretty well, but three or four crazed fae on me, and my reckoning mode not available... dead meat. So, I was thinking... maybe I should load my save from just before heading into Detre and do some more sidequests. I load the early save, then thought... no, I will go back and re-try that cavern... only instead of reloading one of the recent saves... I accidentally saved over them. D'OH!!! I did it not once but twice. Derp.

Anyway, I had leveled up and now my lightening spell is incredibly bad-ass, lightening bolts coming down from the sky and all, but... it uses up my magic too quickly and has too long of a wind-up. This seems counter-intuitive to me.

X-play Reviewd it a 2.5 out of 10 .-. is the game really that bad I missed most of the review but what i heard was that all enemies possible show up really early on in the game and boss battles are uber easy and major let down and i think was something on poor dialog?

is the game seriously that bad?

Adam Sessler was probably on some hallucinogenic drugs on the day he reviewed this game. Some of his complaints are ridiculous (incomprehensible map, and frame rate and audio issues). The map is perfectly fine (it shows roads, dungeon entrances, rivers, jump off points, buildings, enemies, etc., and has its own skill tree in the form of detect hidden), the frame rate on my mid range PC stays at 60 FPS constant, and I've seen zero audio issues. If he wanted to give it 2.5/5, he is entitled to (and I disagree with him), but he shouldn't just make stuff up.

Whelp....

I really dislike many things about this game, BUT...

I must admit the combat is rather addictive, and the few days off from work I've had this week have largely been spent in KoA and DA:2.

I feel so dirty.

Eh, I think it would be best if there is a sequel to not include R.A. Salvatore. It's safe to say he is partly to blame on it's generic qualities.

I suspected as much. I've tried to read his books before but couldn't make myself get past a few pages. The generic nature of the world aside, though, the stories are actually good. Yes, they rely on tropes, but there's enough nuance and difference to them to make them interesting for the short time that you're on their course.

You should, for DA2. :stare:
:P

Question: where does KoA leave the DA franchise? It's obviously what Bioware were aiming for, and Big Huge Studios have far exceeded Bioware's efforts. Does DA have anything left to offer at all in a third installment?

Call me crazy, but I enjoyed DA2 :ermm:
Bought this today. It's good fun, one of those games you can tool around in without taking it too seriously.

Dragon Age 2 was a lot more actiony than the first, but it's still team based combat with a focus on companion personalities and interaction. That's a different kind of experience compared to KoA's solo combat.

Companion interaction and group combat... I don't know. That doesn't seem like enough. They'll have to create some point of difference for the combat. I don't think the market will comfortably support two actiony/arcadey RPGs.

Maybe EA plans to leapfrog the two franchises? Even then, I suspect they've injured the DA franchise more than it already has been.

OK...

I would have to call this the best special edition... EVAR made!

The RPG Dice are an absolutely brilliant touch:

Yea it's not bad but it's too generic for my taste.

Finally got around to putting those last couple points in Find Hidden..... and I'm tempted to go respec my skills now. Having all the chests/etc shown on the map feels a bit too "easy"/cheating. Takes away some of the fun of exploring. /ponder

I got the cheapest special edition, and it is indeed amazing. It has some very well-made stuff in it.

As a Salvatore and DnD fan, I'm actually really happy with the game, especially some of the enemies (Ettin and Kobolds come to mind); parts of it just scream to me "This is the Dungeons and Dragons game that should be made."

Did Curt Shilling actually do dev work on the game? I ask because he seems to be doing the media circuit for the game which seems....odd? Can't imagine anyone from Beth going on Conan to promote the game....?

Is he basically just a figurehead used by EA to promote the game or an actual programmer who did work on the game?

The only people that should like this game are kids. All this a--hole campany did the whole time they talked about there game was run every other game into the ground. They tried comparing there game to Skyrim, what a freaking joke. All you did Big Huge crap Games is rip off WOW, which btw svcks too. Im done, I hope this game fall flat on its face. :)

What are the different types of guilds?
There are six faction in all which are the Warsworn who are honorable mercenaries, The House of Ballads a home for Sunmer Fae hero/adventurers , The House of Sorrows which is home to Winter Fae who have a uneasy peace with Tuatha, The Travelers who are your honorable thiefs, The Scholia Arcana which is home to mages/scholars who study magic, and finally the last faction is the House of Valor which is a arena. You can only get the House of Valor if you get the game new since EA put in a Season Pass which will unlock the House of Valor.

I tend to buy my games now, but way to go and tarnish some of a game's longevity, EA... :glare:

Are any of the factions exclusive of members in other factions? I mean, are there any choices to make in regards to joining them? Any choice as how to approach quests in them? How much content do they each have? Are they interesting?

Hmm, didn't know about the arena being pass-locked.

Actually just did that one last night. And, while it wasn't bad, it's certainly not something I'd be sad to miss..... the rewards aren't all that great (several random purple loots), and it's mostly just a bunch of fights in a box.

(Most disappointing thing is that there's no "final prize" for finishing off all the missions on the fight board. That whole thing ended up being a big waste - the gold you get isn't as much as you lose on repairs, if your gear is any good at all, and it doesn't seem to give XP.)

You can join any guild doesn't matter what your class is. I haven't played all the faction quests but the ones I did do offered a choice at the end which changes the guild like if the bad guy wins or losses. I only have done the House of Ballads, Warsworn, and the House of Sorrows but if you speed(just do the faction quests and nothing else)right through them I suspect you'll get maybe 2-4 hours of gametime each faction. The Warsworn are probably the longest since there are side quests which operates kinda like the Chanter's board in DA.

I'm starting to think that a greatsword wielding battlemage isn't a viable skill combination. Those damn things take forever and a half to swing and leave you very vulnerable to enemy attacks. Also having to divide skillpoints between Might and Sorcery means it takes longer for the good stuff of both to unlock

My thoughts on Reckoning

Pros
Combat is excellent
Good Writing which is better then I thought it was going to be
Love the Destiny System and the ability to Respec is a godsend
looting stuff is addictive
High monster respawn rate

Cons
Level locking outdoor zones is a terrible idea and makes the game too easy
Games difficulty can vary from incredibly easy to insanely hard
Using Abilities on the 360 controller is an issue due to me not being able to hold the trigger and get the attack off before being hit by an enemy.
Lack of a good character creation

Other then some minor issues Reckoning is great, I'd give it a 9.5/10 rating. If there's a sequel you could be looking at something magnificent. In terms of stability, Reckoning is very stable easily more then Skyrim. I've only had one freeze in 60 hours of gameplay and I just loaded an autosave from 2-5 minutes back so no harm no foul.
