Happy Hearth's Warming everyone. Just got home from visiting grandma so I can finally enjoy some of my presents. Nothing pony related except perhaps the http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x-hLfsrEXQo http://chzbronies.files.wordpress.com/2011/09/my-little-pony-friendship-is-magic-brony-pinkie-zonday1.jpg that were a part of the gift my little brother (a little 11 years old brony) gave to me. Now I'm prepared for if Discord and his chocolate rain returns.
The way I let my family discover ponies was simply by letting them stumble into them. Don't make a show out of it really or try to make them watch it. Just buy some blind bag ponies or something, put them on display in your room and eventually they will notice them. Here is a picture of my own set up.

And if they ask just answer and answer true. I bought them to support Hasbro for making a great show and that's what I go with as it's the honest truth. Doesn't mean I don't also like them for the looks (aside from the Fluttershy ones, the brushable and the rainbow dash re-color blind bag) but I did initially buy them to support free good shows on youtube since I couldn't buy them anyway as they were not for sale.
One of my cousins was delivering presents today (or well, yesterday really since midnight has passed here) and he went into my room and stumbled onto my dragon + ponies and just commented "interesting mix you got there". Now perhaps he will be intrigued by my explanation that I liked the show so much that I decided to buy them and he will watch it himself and maybe he will not. It's his choice and I don't have to press the issue really.
Remember, it's always best to get people into MLP:FiM by having them get naturally interested by hearing about it, not by making them watch it in any way or manner. Else they won't watch it with an open mind of "I'll give this a try".
