Lockpick Rage

Post » Wed Jun 13, 2012 4:56 am

...It drives me insane. Ive actually had to stop playing the game for a few minutes so i didnt get angry. WTF is that about?!

This isnt really a question, more just venting. Although if anyone else feels the same way, I wouldn't mind hearing it
I find this very funny. I can't help diagnose why you've started getting mad at this. All I can suggest is to invest in the "Lockpicking" perk, then

lol!

you do realize that there is nothing 'hard' about picking locks, right?

you've read this thread so you know what the rationale is behind smokeys and others' posts, right?

if so, then contribute something meaningful or, at least, correct.

yes i have... you dont want to bother with opening locked chests anymore cuz it bores you... what you fail to see is that it is a part of the game designed to tie up time and break the game up a lil bit. so you mod it to make it instant so you can focus on what you really want to do in the game... so i repeat myself here from a previous post... dont focus on lockpoicking and do the other content you like then as it is not required but in a very few instances that you have to lockpick anything to lvl up or progress your story... as far as contributing something correct... was my last statement not correct? you say you are bored with lockpicking so you get a mod to do it instantly for you... is that not EXACTLY what i said in post #121? For someone telling me to learn to read, maybe you should re-read that post word for word before you call me out on a factual error...

Overall, I'm fond of Skyrim's Lockpicking. It factors in player skill and character skill pretty well. What I'm not fond of, is lockpicking being the only way to open locks... Unless you count the Tower stone.

It just seems to me like there aught to still be "Open" Spells. Maybe with disproportionately high magicka costs, and even their own perk node(s) to open higher quality locks. Fitting trade off.

Another thing, more a cosmetic issue, but different locks. Standard - Hardened - Dwemer. Adding different visuals and slightly different picking mechanics to mix it up.

still waiting for you to point out the inconsistancy in my post... you said you were bored with lockpicking and installed a mod to have it done for you... i advised you to stop lockpicking as it wasnt necessary... you say you can still lock pick but dont want to have to do the mini game for the loot inside... I call you out on wanting it all handed to you with no effort on your part... you get mad and say i wasnt correct and then you provided no proof to the contrary... what am I missing here?

here's how:

he didn't say he wanted an easy mode.
he didn't say he wanted everything handed to him with no effort.

in skyrim, you can also get a quick idea of where the sweet spot is by watching the animation of the pick on the screen and the sound being made.

when you're nowhere close the pick will move considerably and you hear that rattling. when you're in the sweet spot it sort of does an obvious single click with no movement of the pick.

Aaah... thank you! It seems like I knew that unconsciously and you just crystalized it for me.

RIP unlock spells :violin:
indeed.

as for positioning, I just find a reference on the background picture to use.

also using a binary search for the sweet spot helps.

I finally found a mod that adds auto-picking based on your character's skill level! :P I am now satisfied.

i miss oblivion's lockpicking game, it was easy (although it should have been level-locked since it was so easy, i was opening master locks when i should have been working on adept)

Someone said that lock picks still break with the skeleton key and the unbreakable perk. I can't speak for the unbreakable but the pick does not break with the skeleton key. I've been using it for a while now and it doesn't break and you don't have to find the sweet spot again. Your game must be glitching or something.
As for the don't like using them because of RP reasons, maybe daddy was a locksmith and you picked it up sitting at his knee. Or you grew up in the "wrong part of town" and it's a skill from a misspent youth.

are you saying that you can just sit there and fiddle around with the pick and not worry about being too rough or fast or anything and it will open?

there's no delay or reset involved with the process?

That's exactly what I'm saying. There is no reset or anything. I tested it to make extra sure I turned to an area I knew was wrong and held the right stick. It vibrated and nothing happened, pick didn't break and nothing reset. With the Skeleton key that is.

True, the Skeleton Key does not break, but if you have any picks on hand at the time each failure deducts one. This is pretty much how the Unbreakable perk works as well, which leads me to believe that the deduction is hard-coded as part of the mini-game. Note that the Skeleton Key will still work if you have no regular picks on hand, since the game cannot deduct picks you don't actually have.

Sir I believe you are mistaken. I read your post and tried it with the skeleton key. I let the controller vibrate for a full minute and never lost a pick. I even dropped all but three of them so I'd be extra sure.

The Skeleton Key will only break if you add it through the console.
If you get it where you're supposed to, it'll never break.

Ooh could you link to that mod?

I actually love this lockpicking style and have had very few frustrating moments. In the early stages I simply save before doing a master lock and if I feel I've broken too many picks I go back and try again. It usually only takes 10 to 15. None of the other levels really seem that hard to me.

simple trick. When testing an area on the lock simply and quickly nudge the joystick. This keeps the lock pick from instantly breaking. On a master lock this should give you at least two tries with the same pick. On a novice lock you can use this method almost indefinitely. However the game does seem to keep track of how many times you used a pick so eventually it will break even if using it on a different lock.

There are certain areas on the lock that seem to be used more than others. The most places seems to be 25 degrees right or left of the middle. I test these places second.. (always simply test the middle starting position first.. a lot of the time on easier locks you don't need to move the pick at all. )

here's how:

he didn't say he wanted an easy mode.
he didn't say he wanted everything handed to him with no effort.

actually he did... he said he was bored with lockpicking and installed a mod to do it for him..... that makes it easy mode and hands you the loot with no effort... so again... tell me how i was incorrect?
