Mass Effect Thread #53

Post » Sun May 13, 2012 9:16 am

I like Liara, but I think Bioware has handled her in a really bad way, what with her complete change to a cold, ruthless, revenge obsessed broker in ME2. The reasons why may be understandable, but they're only given a brief explanation and her limited screentime doesn't really give us much time to explore her character. And instead of actually go from there, they more or less just hit the reset button and revert Liara back to something closer to her original personality with Lair of the Shadow Broker.

Lately, it seems like Bioware's idea of character development is to skip forward for X number of years, and present him/her with a completely different personality. They did it with Liara in ME2, and again with Anders in DA2. If I still had interest in the Dragon Age series, I'd dread what they'd do to Morrigan.

About the spoilers. Brace yourself, launch is coming. Last year they had super big gigantic spoilers all over the place. It's to be expected really. It's particularily bad with ME series, but any series this time of the year should be hidden from out of fear of spoilers.

Liara is so boring oh my god. Just feel like bashing my head on the wall talking to a chalk board. She went from shy awkward to crazy ice queen back to... I dunno man. She's been the least consistent character. And one of the least interesting, oh boo hoo your friend was kidnapped liara. Oh noes. I kind of hand to freaking nuke a planet full of innocent Batarians and all sorts of stuff. Don't see me going all freaky obsesive. She's a control freak and probably just a tad egotistical, or crazy.

Tali I hate less so as Tali and because I have to put up with everyone not shutting up about her. I really thought I migh tlike Tali as a character until people kept cramming their opinion down my throat. Even the majority of my friends would never shut up about her for a period of 3 months. It's only enough to drive me insane when they constantly talked about her.
I actually like Liara although she isn't as great as somebody like Garrus, I think I like Liara's VA more then Liara.

Tali I hate with a passion, I will admit I liked that her character got some more confidence but I still dislike her a lot.

Did you play the Shadow broker? They didn't hit the reset button.. she was extremely cold until you really reached out and let her know that she didn't need to be that way with you (and partially when you conclude the story by taking out the big bad). She felt slightly distant up even near the end until the moment when you're in the Normandy and she asks you how you're really feeling, and you vent a little to her. It was a great moment honestly. Your Shepard gets to express some emotion and it creates a moment where Liara is able to have some character development. I don't think Mass Effect should be melodramatic, but it really strikes a chord when you have this character who is a tough macho man saying "You know what, I don't know how we're going to pull this off and it worries me."

Shadow Broker probably has some of the best moments in the franchise.

ME2 showed that Liara was dangerously walking down the "she who fights monsters" path, something that Shepard can point out to her. The necessity of her actions and behavior notwithstanding, the fact of the matter was that not only had she become much more ruthless over the past two years (going so far as to consider murdering five people she suspected of conspiring against her), but she ultimately pushed Shepard away in order to pursue her vengeance, even though Shepard, who's now alive, was a big reason for why she was pursuing said vengeance. And Lair of the Shadow Broker ends with...Liara getting everything she wants (
Spoiler
killing the Broker and saving her friend
) conveniently, no strings attached, failings, moral conundrums, or lessons learned. And as such...goes back easily to her more genteel personality. All that development that happened to her in the background prior to ME2 (http://www.darkhorse.com/Comics/16-421/Mass-Effect-Redemption-1) is neatly swept under the rug and forgotten about over the course of one couple-hour long DLC. In the end, the whole subplot concerning Liara concluded before it really began, and the drama surrounding it ultimately became moot.

As I said, reset button.

Or you can all say, get some self control, and use spoiler tags.

Ash was the best character in ME1. She was the most human. Sure thats not the most interesting, but damn it beats the other options, becuase atleast I can take her somewhat seriously. Unlike the walking codex or the merc who just likes fighting/killing.
It was also entertaining to see people whine about her "racism" then complain about her being religious.

I wouldn't even use those two in the same sentence. I am deeply saddened by the turn out of DA2. The writers on that side of the hall are a completely different crew. It really sets a bad taste in the mouth of fans when characters like Anders are destroyed. And statements from the lead writer like "If we want to bring someone back, it's because we wanted to", when asked about the return of characters that were clearly decapitated in DAO.

I actually like Liara although she isn't as great as somebody like Garrus, I think I like Liara's VA more then Liara.

Garrus was one of the characters I didn't like. He was just too plain, too predictable maybe? Hell, I don't know. He just seemed like this typical sidekick kind of character. Plus the whole Grasshopper / Catman hybrid thing just creeps me out.

Tali...I am like a yo-yo with her. At times I like her and other times I find myself wanting to pack her ass in the airlock. And throw Joker in there with her.

Shadow Broker probably has some of the best moments in the franchise.

I think so to. Great stuff all around, I thought.

She was a terrible character either way.

There is love and hate for all of them. In one form or another. That's good though. It's what keeps things interesting.
ME1 - Liked Liara
ME2 - Disliked Liara
LOTSB - Ok... maybe I'm starting to come around.
ME3 - We'll see.

Ehh better than ash in me1

Any char was better that either Ash or Kad. I absolutely despise them both. I wished I could have left both of them on Vermire.

She is racist. Then in the same breath talk about being religious. Ashes to Ashley, I say. Then the confrontation in ME2 just didn't set well either. JMO that's all.

Yep. As a matter of fact, that's what the first encounter with Wrex is about. He is not that happy about you getting in the way of his bounty. Not to mention the detail he goes into while in dialog back on the ship. I even think his default Armor is Merc gear.

In ME1 I ran with Wrex and Ashley. Her ME2 appearance has turned me off of her though. Now Wrex is gone. Garrus was okay, so he'll be ont he squad. But overall all the best characters have been shuffled into supporting roles. I'm really surprised Legion and either Wrex or Mordin didn't make the cut as squadmates. Seems kind of central to a large part of the plot.

Edit
Nooo!!! ME3 Collecotrs Edition is sold out in stores. I have to hope a spot will open so I can preorder.

Heh, I think that their selection process for the squad members is based off of the number of fans who want to [censored] them.

All the characters are ME1 characters except James Vega and the other new guys. That's their selection process. I don't know why ME1 character are so much more important than ME2 characters, but I guess you just have to roll with it.

As far as I can see everyone from ME2 makes cameos in ME3. Some are larger than others, they might join you as a temporary companion for example.

The CE looks damn nice for only an extra $20. But I'll probably end up borrowing it from my uncle once he's done with it.

Okay managed to get a copy of the CE, had to use a prepaid to nab it online. I'll miss one of the pre order guns, but whatever. It'll be released in a DLC pack. The collectors edition stuff likely wont be released in a DLC pack any time soon. Look how long it took to get the Collector Rifle from ME2 collector's edition out to the public. And only in an expensive art book.

Not to mention one of the hidden squad mates is in it as DLC. Gotta have that, it's a critical part of the experience for me.

Yeah missing one gun isn't going to be a big deal. I really doubt it is mattock level powerful.
