media reaction to fallout bugs

Post » Sun Dec 19, 2010 4:54 am

Journalists love blood in the water. Video game journalists are no different. By now Obsidian has garnered a reputation for releasing buggy games, so they tend to get put under a microscope and reviewers show them less mercy than they would otherwise.

Not saying New Vegas isn't buggy, I've had plenty of issues. But reviewers tend to over-exaggerate when they're bashing a "safe" target that already has some notoriety attached to its name.

But this little gem from the Destructoid article is priceless:

That said, it would be wrong to discount the fact that Bethesda's Gamebryo engine is an outdated, obsolete, crippled husk of misery and discontent.

lol it just gets more attention because this is a big game, yes its buggy, but its not that buggy. I have had freezez every hour or two, ed-e went missing onc, something obscured my screen and I was stuck in a rock. Honestly I have had worse.

Buggiest game I've ever played :\

You must have never played any game from Sierra during the 90's...

So far I have only had one major bug, but man it hurt, and there was no going back.

About 10 hours into the game I found out checking my rads that my stats +'s had changed. I picked Stealth + Guns + Lockpicking like I always do during first few runs... It changed to Energy + Barter + Guns... Why would I pick both Energy and Guns : / . The worst part was I guess it switched way back because all my saved games where that way. Still playable, but I think it would have been easier if it did it right.

I've had one major bug where Veronica wouldn't start her "observation" conversations, preventing her quest from starting.

Besides that, the only bug I've seen is that my weapon model will sometimes disappear while sneaking(still fires and reappears when I aim though).

as much as I was looking forward to this game, it should have been delayed. or even after the game was shipped, they should have been working on a patch already and when we first popped in the game on the 19th, should have seen an update. no way they could have not known about all these bugs, we're just playing the game as its meant to be played and encountering all this crap.

I actually had far far far more problems with Fallout 3.
Heck just making it past the goat exam became an exercise in frustration.
And that was after the warm-up frustration of the haircuts freezing up every time.

But yeah I think this is just the gaming media jumping on a bandwagon.
Everyone loves to try to out sensationalize the next person. It just feeds on itself.

Figures. Bandwagons will be bandwagons.

I've played games with far more glitches than New Vegas has thrown at me.

And it's always the glitchiest games that tend to be the best games in terms of everything else. Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines anyone?

Also, one of the buggiest games of the decade? Did these people start gaming just last week? Terrible.

Figures someone like you and the rest of the people calling this a good game, or saying its not that bad would make a stupid comment. Its not the point that it has glitches or bugs, the game should have never been released. The testers should have made sure the little bugs/game saving and loading bugs (XBOX360) should not have been there. The company Obsidian should have made sure the testers was doing there jobs. Yes there may be alot of games with worse glitches/bugs, but thats not the point and it does not give you the right to tell people not to complain. Money obviously does not grow on trees. So get out the devs bed and stay off the forums, If you are going to diss the thousands, of console users who are the main people having these problems.

You have a pretty big chip on your shoulder. You should probably settle down and stop making assumptions.

Ohh and for the people on here saying "I have only seen a few minor bugs" or "I have only seen so many bugs or crashes after so many hours" Ask yourself this, What system/Console or you playing this game on and maybe you should read deeper into the fourms. The Xbox version you cant even play once and save bugs hits you.

I'm really glad to hear that so many others here have not had the kinds of problems I've been having and reading about. Maybe it's a PC vs. console thing. I'm playing on Xbox 360, and in the course of about 30 hours of play (so far), I've had...

  • Numerous situations where I get stuck in terrain and have to fast travel away to get loose
  • Regularly requiring me to quit the game entirely because the video gets so choppy (roughly 1-2 times each time I play)
  • Weapons not displaying properly in first-person mode (e.g., arm completely obscuring the screen and not moving)
  • A blank screen interface (like from hacking) blocking the lockpicking minigame until I quit and restarted
  • Multiple quests screw up because I've done things not in the preferred order (e.g., the "ED-E My Love" quest)

I'm enjoying it, but yeah, hands down, buggiest gaming experience I've ever had, and I've been playing games regularly since the Atari 2600.

Yeah it's buggy as hell, has tons of glitches, save problems, lock ups and random crashes.

Still [censored] best game I played all year.

No chip on my shoulder, you must understand i play the 360 version and if you check the 360 part of the forums, its full of people having a really hard time with this game and the save/load issue. I am also not making assumptions, the people making the assumptions is the people assuming that the people on here complaining are doing so for bs reason's when they are infact good reasons.

If you have never had an extremely buggy game in it's early release, then you either have never played video games, or have the power of god to wipe out bugs. Give me a break, buggiest game of the decade? That is just plain slander.

Right, but I never, ever discredited the claims of anyone here.

I just found it ridiculous that the mass media is reporting New Vegas as "one of the buggiest games of the decade" when it certainly isn't. It has bugs, yes, but it has nothing on some of the stuff that has come out in the past 10 years.

Another one here who hasn't experienced any major bugs, certainly nothing game-stopping, and only 1 CTD in 70 hours of play which was my own fault - and lets face it, that's good for any PC game. Playing the Steam download on PC.

I think it's an amazing game, I'm having trouble stepping away from the monitor - been playing all the free time I have since it came out here last Friday and still not halfway through the main quest, and loads of locations I haven't found. It will be a real shame if the lasting memory of the game is of the bugs (which I have every faith will be patched, both companies involved have good records on this score) rather than how great it is in every other aspect.

I didn't play The Witcher for ages because of reports of bugs in the initial release giving it a bad reputation, they'd been long fixed by the time I actually got around to playing it and that's another awesome game, but what I remembered of it was that all the reviews when it came out focussed on the bugs, those reviews were still there in black and white long after the bugs had been sorted.

Or you are Chuck Norris, and Chuck Norris doesn't get bugs - bugs get Chuck Norris!

.. or something.

So, the more I search for solutions to some of the bugs, the more posts and articles I find that are starting to hightlight them. Here are a few. If you find more, post them.

Best of all... PCWorld simply gathered all other links for you, describing Fallout NV as one of the glitchiest games of the decade. Enjoy.

It's been no more buggy than Fallout 3 and Oblivion for me. People (reviewers in particular) didn't mind pulling the wool over their eyes for those two.

Some of the reviews are suspect since they quote other reviews out of context. One guy uses an Ars quote to make Fallout NV sound bad, but when you go to the Ars review, Ars says that FO:NV is a "BUY" despite the glitches.

The game is glitchy but it's so much fun I can't stop playing.

With that said if the gaming press puts the screws on then more power to them. Obsidian could do with some shaming since releasing buggy games is becoming a pattern for them. Sorry Obsidian. You have a high fame with the Fallout Fan Faction, but a low karma. You need to do some good deeds or your end-game is going to svck. :celebration:
