media reaction to fallout bugs

Post » Sun Dec 19, 2010 3:58 am

So, the more I search for solutions to some of the bugs, the more posts and articles I find that are starting to hightlight them. Here are a few. If you find more, post them.

Best of all... PCWorld simply gathered all other links for you, describing Fallout NV as one of the glitchiest games of the decade. Enjoy.

Exactly what came to my mind the second I read the thread title.

Ouch. That is really going to hurt Bethesda's/Obsidian's reputation whether they like it or not. Expect every single review about a game either company has done from this point onwards to mention them creating/publishing "The buggiest game of the decade"

On the upside, this is going to really motivate them to work even harder on the patches.

Figures. Bandwagons will be bandwagons.

I've played games with far more glitches than New Vegas has thrown at me.

And it's always the glitchiest games that tend to be the best games in terms of everything else. Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines anyone?

Also, one of the buggiest games of the decade? Did these people start gaming just last week? Terrible.

40 hours of gameplay.

No freezes, no crashes(well, had an issue which was not the game's fault), and no significant bugs. Smooth sailing.

Feels good man.

Media awareness is good though as it may pursade the company to release more patches etc. Although the past two Fallouts have ran on the Oblivion engine I can't help but think the amount of bugs on Oblivion where next to none.

The bugs I've experienced were all extremely minor, I don't see why these journalists are so butt hurt about it. The problem is journalistic groupthink. Obsidian has a history of bugs, fair or not, and whenever they encounter a bug it plays into that narrative. Truth is, this game is tremendous step forward for the franchise, and Obsidian has done wonders with the outdated, buggy tools provided to them, especially when you consider the timeframe.

I'd have to agree. This is one broken game. When it freezes and crashes it does so by the dozens, and it will take me hours to go threw a simple mission. Of course, then I'll have hours with no problems.

That one is no coincidence, it is made by a lot of the same people as the original Fallouts and several of the developers worked for Obsidian for a time.
I remember years and years ago there was a stigma associated with it here for some reason and that actually kept me from playing it until like last year and I absolutely loved it when I did.

Okay, just to be clear, its the buggiest game of which decade? The 2000s or the 2010s? For the sake of posterity, we must know!

40 hours *minus three* of gameplay.

No freezes, no crashes(well, had an issue which was not the game's fault), and no significant bugs. Smooth sailing.

This. It's the last thing people having problems wanna read, but it is true. Nothing significant. All I've really encountered is...

- cards not going into the caravan deck - and cards and some other items (NCR money) not showing in the Misc section of inventories where they belong, when viewing the merchants inventory, or my own next to the merchant inventory) Have to scroll through my section, or their or section to find them. Meaning early on I missed buying cards because they simply didn't show up in the Misc section, and I was conditioned playing Fallout 3 to buy and sell by category. Like displaying Me>Weapons Merchant>Weapons sell and buy whatever, Me> Apparel Merchant>Apparel sell and etc.
- some mad Radscorpion activity.
- some convos that have NPCs mentioning characters and places as if I'd mentioned them, despite my never having heard of them until they'd mentioned them.

Last and the first ones I list aren't even bugs or glitches.

So far there was an issue that i found in the map probably mentioned before. Walking along train tracks and just randomly there was absolutely no ground (like a huge square of ground wasn't there. A victory pit if you would (If you play TF2 you should get the reference)

I have found 1 glitch thus far, fixed by wandering out of the area and waiting for a couple in game days.

JOurnalists (even those who do video games) are prone to blowing things out of proportion and seeing things for what they aren't. I don't know what they did, but the people playing these games must not have any technical background, as simply installing and clearing cache mostly solve the loading time. I love this game, and everyone I know who has it says the same thing.

It's my personal belief that
a) They are blowing it out of proportion
B) are simply posting about it to be trolls and thus garner attention, the same reason the Journalists did

To all of you who have not experienced game ending crashes (and the one I'm up against affects my past 20 saves. All worthless now), congrats. To those of us who have experienced them and are trying to find solutions, your constant reminders are slightly irritating.

Well, public shame can be a powerful motivator. I love Bethesda and Obsidian both, and they produce some of my favorite games, but there is no denying that those games have a habit of being more bug ridden than a dumpster. Up till now both companies have continued to release buggy games after they were gently called out on doing so in the past. Maybe an internet wide article frenzy on how poorly tested their games are is necessary to scare or shame them into alotting more time for bug fixing and testing on wider range of machines.

It isn't unfair to call them out at this point. Both of Bethesda's last two games had buggy launches, and this makes Obsidian's second very buggy launch of a game this year. Hell, they are REPEATING some of the same bugs.

It seems none of their 70+ testers were playing the PC version of the game on a 64bit system with a quad core - a huge majority of the PC users experiencing problems have high-end machines. Did they not test the game on the most recent gaming rigs? But here they get the only leeway they are going to get from me on the issue - there are a huge combination of PC hardware, software, and drivers where something can go wrong.

But for consoles? No excuse. Every console is identical hardware and software. It is a closed environment. Definitely no sympathy for them there.

I hope the next time Bethesda or Obsidian release a game, whether working together or not, they allocate several months devoted to nothing but bug testing. I WANT to see both companies succeed and do their best. And if being called "unfit" loudly and shamefully in public is what it takes for them to put on some running shoes and get themselves in shape, I'm all for it.

Vampire the masquerade: Bloodlines was so amazing.. That + New Vegas = 2 Best RPGs I have ever played.. Ah how I loved that game..

If Obsidian's next project was a new Vampire the masquerade game (They would have to buy the licensing though I think) I would probably have a seizure out of excitement.. that was suchhhh a good game.. so good

But back on topic, to the people saying there are no glitches/bugs and people are just hopping on a band wagon I'm sorry but just because you have been lucky and have not experienced these game breaking bugs does not mean they don't exist. Far more people are experiencing game breaking bugs/corrupted saves than those who are not. FAR more(Unless it's a big conspiracy and everyone is pretending.. lol see how silly you guys sound?)

I love New Vegas as much as a man can love a video game but at the end of the day it is very, very broken and buggy at the moment and in desperate need of a patch.

Obviously they never played the first two Stalker games lol. Those two were utter crap without patches. It took like 7 patches to get Clear Sky working without game killing bugs, and corrupt saves. Calling this game any worse is irresponsible journalism. I feel bad for the people having major problems though, and hope things get fixed quickly.

I don't mind the glitches.

Having a good game underneath the problems is more important for me.

There's pleanty of low-glitch games out there that aren't that good.

I can't stop playing FO:NV. I'm on my 2nd playthrough and it's been almost completely different than my first. So whatever evil you can say about the games engine it DOES allow for a variety of playthoughs. This isn't CoD: MW2 (Single player) where ever things is a perfectly scripted event. "Rail" shooters just aren't going to have bugs but they have limited replay value. I'd love to have everything but I'll take replay value over glitches any day. The critics are just jumping on the band wagon and complaining instead of actually being critical by providing anolytical and objective statements.
