Meet the New Vegas Companions

Post » Sat Feb 19, 2011 2:46 am

I don't care that they are mostly white (I'm half white) and that Raul and lily are African and Mexican. I just would like one black human or another race mutant i don't care. Just disappointed because I think 200 years after the war there would be a lot more mixed people you know.

I think you're really missing the big picture, race is moot in Post War America, I doubt the devs said 'LOLOLOLOL LETS MAKE THE ETHNICS MUTANT' They just wanted to spice up their characters, I mean come on, whats more colorful? A pre-war suburban guy turned ghoul, or a bandito turned mechanic ghoul?

By the way, why was it even worth pointing out the race thing? I mean, really.

Because it is something of an issue. I'm not saying that the developers are a bunch of bigots but somebody at some time during development should have saud "Hey! Out of our two ethnic characters one is blue and the others skin has been melted off. And our other four human companions are all white. Maybe we should take some time to fix this."

It's an oversight. And it just happens to carry some unfortunate implications.

Did I say that? As a mixed person I would like to see mixed people. If you look at the bios, every single one says Caucasian so I didn't look at the face and said white. I said what I thought civially and respectably so please do that for me.

As a point of clarification, Raul's personality has to do with where he grew up, not what his ethnic background is.

EDIT: And ethnicity doesn't have any bearing on any of the companions' personalities.

Fix it? It's not an oversight, and it carries no implications. You're reading things into it that aren't there. There's nothing wrong with the way they set up the characters.

Have you seen Machete? In that movie all of the villains are white. Should they "fix it?"

Holy crap, I just realized that all of the doctors in the game are men! They need to fix that!

Did I say that? As a mixed person I would like to see mixed people. If you look at the bios, every single one says Caucasian so I didn't look at the face and said white. I said what I thought civially and respectably so please do that for me.

Is this directed at me? If so, how was I uncivil or disrespectful? The point I was trying to make is that everybody is mixed...we all are. My question was, "why does ethnic background matter?"

Love the Wall-E reference with ED-E. :D

Well thats what I'm saying though. In Fallout, I've never seen Ethnicity come into play in any of the games. If they have I must have missed that part.(I only said Bandito cause the profile says he was a cowboy, and I know bandito isnt cowboy but thats what I associate bandito as)

@Tayci- If you want mixed, play around with the skin tone. Being mixed doesnt have a set tone, my brother is mixed and he doesnt look a mix of either black or white. It sounds like you are a little fired up over nothing to be honest.

Softnerd the second and third sentence are for you, the whole post is for Martyr, I was just explaining why I feel that way. If there was all black people you'd feel that way most likely. Not starting a race thing at all just giving more perspective.

I think the number of females are good but men are more badass in my opinion and I need me some men six slaves anyways.

Wow martyr you are twisting my words. All I said was it would be nice. If there isn't any then that's ok, won't kill me, it would just be nice.

Understood. Raul was a vaquero (functionally identical to the American cowboy) in Mexico before the war.

I thought Victor would have been a non human follower. Temporary follower? Still ED-E is going to be fun to have along. I hope a random occurs where ED-E starts a broadcast of the 'saints go marching in.' And then were all like 'no-no-nooooo no more enclave propoganda!.' Ed-E then states, 'interesting audio anomaly'

Also dissapointed with no CL follower(that we know of)- Would have loved to have a tribal-CL convert gladiator.

Skin color isn't an issue. It doesn't matter if they're all black, white, yellow or green. All that matters is if they're good characters.

Not in the slightest, although I would think it was odd if everyone in the game had the same racial appearance. :P

That said, if none of the companions matched by ethnic background would it bother me? I can honestly say "no." In fact, I probably wouldn't even notice. Then again, if everybody looked at issues like these the way I do this conversation wouldn't have happened in the first place. :P

By the way, why are you assuming I'm caucasian?

Will he give us background on his life in the game? Or is it going to be left up to us to fill in the blanks?

@Tayci- I understand where your coming from, but I've always seen Fallout as Ethnically neutral, so I just really don't see much of any real concern to deal with race when it's played little more than an a character color. Sorry, I'm not intending to sound hostile. I think Panda has just riled me up a bit, since he's making something out of nothing.

Let's start a RACE RIOT!!!!!! In all seriousness though I have no idea how this thread devolved into this. All those white characters are fine. In character creation, I found that caucasian what the easiest to adjust to my appropriate mixed raciness. The companions turned out great. Wait a minute... Weren't all of the companions in Fallout 3 100% caucasian as well? Never mind. Star Paladin Cross.

Sheesh. People have really gotta stop feeding the trolls. :\

Also, Rex is from http://fallout.wikia.com/wiki/Dogtown, yay. (or is it Dogtown? The Vault seems to use both names)

Learn how to read. The second and third sentence do not have the word uncivil or disrespectful do they. The last sentence does.

For the record, I was commenting on what someone else said, I did not start it and it is just an opinion. I just noticed that all the companions said caucasian and I was relieved that one was african.

Anyone else find it funny that 3 of the companions are over 200 years old?

Ok, well that does actually tick me off a bit. Be nice.
