[WIP] Pip-Boy 2500

Post » Fri Feb 18, 2011 10:02 pm

Wow, this looks nice. I too would like a broken button or maybe a Rad dial or something to kind of space it out more since there are only 3 buttons on it but it looks pretty good for a prototype model/texture. Once it's beat up a bit more and has a more rugged look all around and behind the vacuum tubes, it'll just about perfect.

I like how the Pip Boy 3500 Readius skin looks a bit more just because it's more filled out and has a bit more detail but this is still pretty awesome.

Would there be a way to make this like the Pimp-boy 3-billion as an option, having an NPC switch it back and forth for you if you ask? That would be nice for my wishy-washy self.

Have you considered changing it to the actual PIP Boy (http://images4.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20081206231731/fallout/images/c/c2/Fallout_PIP-Boy_2000.jpg), as opposed to the Vault Boy (http://static.zenimax.com/bethblog/oldcontent/thumbs-up.jpg)? I love this mod, I have to say-- I have NV on Xbox but I'm seriously considering getting it on PC basically just for this. For other mods as well, of course, but this may just tip me over.

Does that make me a bad person? I don't think so.

But I do think that you should actually give it the PIPboy mascot.

Look a little earlier on in the thread. He was mentioning that he was going to do that. ;)

Hope you did good on those essays! Hoping to see this mod come full circle soon, because I really don't want to start a new game without this mod and another one. Here's to your creation and hoping you get it done. :foodndrink:

I'm having loads of trouble trying to 'rig' this thing in Blender. I've tried a bunch of tutorials but they all seem to be quite outdated. Any help?

I can't believe I didn't spot this sooner, and I hope this mod does turn up eventually, I wish the author the best of luck with getting it done.

I've wanted something like this ever since I saw the Readius. I'm really not a fan of the Readius at all, and personally I believe that the PipBoy 3000 is a step up from it in regards to lore-friendliness. The things that turn me off it are:

- It's too titchy-tiny for Fallout tech. Since things in that Universe tend to be rather big and clunky as par the course, it's part of the art direction. It just looks out of place.

- Related to the above, it's far too flimsy. There aren't any smart phones in the Fallout Universe, but that's kind of what it looks like.

- The buttons are a style unknown to the Fallout Universe.

- The Fallout Universe does not have flatscreen LCD technology, or even flatscreen technology. If it did then surely the Securitrons at least would use it.

Now, that's not to say it's badly put together. I actually think the Readius is a professionally done model and it looks nice, but it's just not Fallout. It's like giving Robin Hood a chainsaw. It might be the best chainsaw in the world, beautifully hand-crafted with a polished wood finish, but it's still a chainsaw held by Robin Hood. It's a total anachronism. In the Fallout Universe, the Readius in an anachronism.

I always wanted something LIKE the Readius, but something that actually felt like it belonged in the Fallout Universe. This seems to be what I've always been looking for.

yeah those buttons have never been in a Fallout game before.

I do agree that the screen should be more curved, not flat.

He was talking about the Pipboy Readius.

And as for the curved screen, it seems unnecessary seeing as you won't be seeing the model at any extreme angles, it'll just end up being a waste of polys.

Yes, I was talking about the Readius. The problem with the Readius is that it doesn't even provide the illusion of being rounded (this can be achieved pretty well with normal maps and textures alone). It's mobile phone-ish, basically... and that's what I was on about with the screen and buttons.

http://www.couchathletics.com/frontpage/mack/modmad/fnvg/fnvg1.jpg - The sorts of buttons here have never been seen in a Fallout game. Nor has a device that flimsy. :P

How I didn't make it clear enough that I was talking about the Readius though is beyond me, since I went out of my way to stress that I was talking about the Readius.

I suppose some people hit Reply without actually being sure as to what they're replying to. (A burn for a burn, since I'm very familiar with my Fallout lore. Thankyouverymuch KyleM!)

I use a Readius Pipboy 2000 Reskin, I really don't like it but I hate the 3000, its just meh, so I guess Readius is the lesser of 2 evils, but only just.

I hope this comes out soon, I want it bad.

I can't agree with you, there. I actually don't understand why people hate the PipBoy 3000 so much. I agree that it looks rather silly on the wrist when looking at it in third person, and it looks fairly ludicrous when wearing power armour (I simply must use a glove remover), but the actual device itself is completely true to Fallout.

Stylistically it actually looks rather similar to the 2000, and the 3000 even has a rounded screen. They really observed the style of Fallout when creating the 3000, so it does fit into the Universe quite well. I'll say it again that I don't like the appearance of it on armour, but the device itself is a very Fallout thing.

That's why I consider Readius to be the far greater evil, contrary to yourself. It's a modern, real world device that doesn't fit into the Fallout Universe at all. I've actually looked at all of the reskins and none of them help. They don't help because it just looks like someone's stuck stickers on the Readius. The worst offender there was actually the PipBoy 2000 skin for the Readius.

This will be the best option when it's released, but until then... I'll stick with my 3000 and glove remover.

You answered your own question. You even use a glove remover mod, yourself.

Personally I wish they would ditch the pipboy, why cant I just push I for inventory and get a good old fashioned inventory screen without some arm mounted monstrosity bringing me out of the game, its immersion breaking, I mean I can understand it for things like Radio and Keeping notes, but that should be about it.

I actually find that the Pipboy is more immersive than just an inventory screen. However I find the 3000 ugly.

For those looking forward to seeing this thing in-game, here's an update on how the model is coming along.

I've asked for help from AlexScorpion himself (the guy who modelled and animated the Pipboy Readius) and he, from what I can tell, seems to be willing to rig the model to replace the Readius. I will do some final modifications to the skin before I release this thing. :)

Great idea, I'm glad to see that he's willing to help.

Cool, can't wait to see this thing in game.
