[WIP] Pip-Boy 2500

Post » Fri Feb 18, 2011 10:44 pm

It's been released! http://www.newvegasnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=38844

Since people have been working on getting the Pip-Boy Readius working on New Vegas. I decided to model an improved Pip-Boy 2000 that fits the Fallout universe.

I've always thought that Doc Mitchell giving you a Pip-Boy 3000 was kind of weird since... well... I'm not sure if the Pip-Boy 3000 is like a watch which you can just put it on and take off so easily. Plus, it felt too reminiscent of FO3. Considering the fact that New Vegas is a throwback to the original Fallouts, I felt that a more traditional Pip-Boy would be nice. So here is the Pip-Boy 2500. :) It will have the Pip-Boy 3000 UI when it's in-game, of course. So, I think the Pip-Boy 2500 is a fitting name.

Anyways, I'm pretty much done with the model itself, see for yourself! (I know there the model doesn't have the grate covering the bulb compartment. :( I'm planning on adding the grate using some kind of transparent alpha map like on the colanders you see on the Female Raider Painspike costume. If that doesn't end up working, I'll think of another grate shape and model it. Or I could simply use a glass pane.)

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v130/EdisLeado/Pip-Boy%202500/pipboy2500_bottom.jpg

And here is the original Pip-Boy 2000 (which many of you should be familiar with) for comparison. :)
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v130/EdisLeado/Pip-Boy%202500/pipboy2000.jpg

I also used this image (found on Google, of course) for help on the design.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v130/EdisLeado/Pip-Boy%202500/pipboyrend.jpg

It's a pretty simple model since the classic Pip-Boy is really just a bunch of boxes, but I've modelled some guns and create some skins for Counter-Strike back in the day.

However, I'm afraid this is where I need some help. I'm not particularly familiar with the the Fallout game engines (GameBryo) model format and so on. I'm wondering if anyone would be so kind to help me UV map this thing to get it ready for skinning? And perhaps after some skins are done (which I and perhaps some other people will contribute to), help me compile it and get it in-game to replace the default Pip-Boy or the Readius? If anyone could help me out with this, I'd be super grateful -- Plus you'll be in the credits!

Send me a PM if you're interested in helping me out. :D

E/ My friend Millenia came through for me with the http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v130/EdisLeado/Pip-Boy%202500/pipboy.jpg. I'm going to try to get the model to replace both the hand-held Pip-Boy Readius AND the arm-mounted Pip-Boy 3000.

E2/ It's been difficult to work on the vacuum tubes and the grate since I dunno how to use transparent textures, etc. I spent all night working on the Pip-Boy 2500 skin, here are the results so far:

http://img717.imageshack.us/f/70590887.jpg/
http://img51.imageshack.us/i/68577788.jpg/
http://img40.imageshack.us/i/24444904.jpg/

Everything was made from scratch. :) Tell me what you guys think of the skin so far! And perhaps give me some suggestions on how to improve it and what I should replace the vacuum tube compartment with if it doesn't work out.

E3/ Well, I've managed to model a grate. The skin is pretty much done, I may add some more wear and tear to it later -- But I'm more concerned about getting it to replace the Pip-Boy Readius right now. I've been messing around in Nifscope, but I think this new model may require quite a bit of rigging for the buttons and what not. Is there anyone out there who can help me out?

That's pretty cool. I have absolutely no knowledge about 3d modeling, so I can't really help you (sorry), but I'm very interested in this.

Could you post the wireframe? The model looks nice, but it's hard to tell if it's engine ready without seeing the wireframe.

There are lots of tutorials online in regards to getting your models into the game, but I have no idea how one would go about implementing it as a functioning pip-boy in-game.

Also, doing the grate with a plane and alpha maps shouldn't pose any difficulties, it's a pretty simple procedure.

Also, when you say skinning, do you mean you're going to rig it in some way, or are you talking about texturing?

I might be able to help with the UV mapping and texturing if you found out a way to get it to work ingame.

Will this be a replaced for the pipboy or just a misc aid item? I'm curious because it certainly isn't intended for being worn on the wrist.

It's intended to replace the PipBoy, similar to the Readius one (which also is not worn on the wrist).

Damn thats just awesome. It always seems strange to me that nobody considered such Mod earlier. I dont got the knowledge myself to help you uv mapping this beauty but you might consider contacting Millenia / Arenovalis on the NVNexus. He's an expert in texture art especially metal surfaces an' stuff. He's lurking around and doing some great retexes lately.

This is an image of the Readius mod, which is the similar concept: http://lh4.ggpht.com/_z1odMghQc7A/TMwcntDNoqI/AAAAAAAAAFg/11u-zz4WoGY/s1152/ScreenShot3.jpg

Wasn't the Pip-Boy 2000 also connected to the arm? I believe it said that in the manual.

There were two version of the PipBoy 2000. One was connected to the arm (the PipBoy 2000 Plus - the one the Vault Dweller/Chosen One had), but the original wasn't.

EDIT: What I'd really like to see is the http://images1.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20070503150034/fallout/images/thumb/5/59/Pipboy3000_2.jpeg/650px-Pipboy3000_2.jpeg, a miniaturized PipBoy 3000. It's worn on the arm, but isn't anywhere near as cumbersome and ugly as the PipBoy 3000. Also, different PipBoy models for different armors so that it actually looks like a PipBoy is built into a suit of power armor or something. Probably not going to happen, though, since that'd be tons of work.

I'd also be interested in a notepad replacement of the pipboy. So instead of a fancy pipboy your technophobic characters rely on a simply pen and paper notebook to track their quests and inventory.

I will definately contact him. I'm pretty sure I know Millenia already from another forum called CDG :) Much thanks!

According to the Fallout wiki, there was a version of the Pip-Boy 2000 called the Pip-Boy 2000 Plus, which was worn on the wrist -- but very cumbersome to wear. Apparently the protagonists from FO1 and 2 wore it.

This is an instant download if it turns out good. I think the most important part is getting the texture right, as you'll be seeing it very close up. The default green color of the text is also much too blue for my liking, it would be amazing to have in the original radioactive green. I have 3dsMax and know how to import models into the game with NifSkope, but I can't do any modelling or texturing.

Here's the wireframe, it's not very tidy, but it works. I dunno if there's actually any requirement for being engine ready though...

And yeah, I mean skinning. But now that I've heard that Millenia works in Fallout, he may be able to help me out as we know each other from CS modelling/skinning days.

As far as I know, I may be able to just replace the Readius model or something and apply all the vertexes off the model to certain bones of the original Pip-Boy (rigging), etc. Not exactly sure how to do it really, lol.

I'm hoping to get some help from the guys who worked on the Pip-Boy Readius. They should know best on how to work everything out. Or if nothing works out, I could try to make a wrist band for the Pip-Boy 2500.

That's pretty awesome. Any idea who owns that concept? I might just give it a shot (Though most people like their PipBoy replacements to be handheld, I'm sure)

That was just concept art for Van Buren I'm pretty sure. You can find it on the Fallout wiki.

My only request is that you have that second broken button. And for it to be compatible with darNified.

As Edis said, that's concept art for Van Buren, so Bethesda probably owns the copyright now.

Whoops, missed that. Hmm... It's probably okay to make it then. They wouldn't complain if you modeled a Fallout 3 item from scratch and put it in FNV, anyway. I'll throw them an email if I get around to actually getting it released though (or if a mod is reading this, they could just give me a heads up on whether that's kosher or not).

Edit: Actually, if the mod this thread for is okay, that one would be too ;)

It should be kosher - there were plenty of items from Fallout 1 and 2 (both of which Bethesda now owns the copyright to) made for Fallout 3, such as classic advanced power armor or the Wattz laser pistol and rifle and Bethesda never complained. EDIT: Good point that this thread's mod being kosher means the Lil' Pip 3000 would be kosher.

Interesting concept. Keeping it lore-friendly and yet not as bulky as the current Pip-Boy 3000 is definately something that would meet high demand.
I personally have nothing against non-lore gear so I'll probably stick with Readius, but still, the concept is awesome and the work so far looks amazing.
