Planning your perks.

Plans are meant to be broken. I will just choose my perks as they come. I couldnt help but check out the perks up to level 10 though. I don't even know what build i want yet.

So apparently you have to have an unknown endurance score to get those medical implants. And knowing this game it's going to be a number above six. Well isn't that just FAN [censored] TASTIC? Thanks a lot, [censored]s. I was actually looking forward to playing this [censored] until now.

Probably just gonna wing it with perks except for educated, getting that ASAP.
Have my first 6 playthrough traits planned though

only Good Natured for 3 of them
and Good Natured and Wild Wasteland for the other 3

Plan on siding with each major faction twice, probably starting with NCR

forget about tag! and here and now. these aren't good perks.
tag! is just a one time 15 point boost in a certain skill. i'd rather go with comprehension. this gives you 1 additional sp per found skill book. there are 51 skill books in the game, means up to 51 points.
here and now is useless. you level pretty quickly anyway, so why not taking something useful like scrounger?

Tag! is an awesome perk in New Vegas. Comprehension is great, true, but Tag!'s extra 15 skill points are the equivalent of a full level up or more as skill points go.

See the thread on maximum skill points available in New Vegas. You can't max more than 5 skills without starting with max INT. 9 skills if you min/max, take Educated, Comprehension, and find all books and otherwise accumulate every skill point possible.

Most people won't be able to max even their tagged skills before level 15. Tag! will be a welcome boost for most players.

Rather not go around looking for skill books and I see what you mean about here and now.

Does anyone know how many points we can add to our special? If I recall for Fallout 3 it was 5.

As I've said in the other threads that got deleted, I fire from the hip as far as char creation and perks. I don't plan it out. I pick perks based on "OOH That looks amusing".

though Wild Wasteland is one trait I will always take. I did plan that out.

those additional 51 points from comprehension are the equivalent of more than 3 full level ups, i don't see your point here.
anyway, since he's obviously not eager hunting skill books, he might be off better with tag! still, before i'd take tag! there would be like 10 other perks i'd prefer

My point is that everyone will need all the skill points they can get in New Vegas. New Vegas gives you fewer skill points than any other Fallout game, even 1 and 2.

My point is that people will want BOTH the Comprehension and skill books AND the Tag! perk, because with the game no longer giving out skill points like candy at Halloween like FO3 did, an extra 15 points is going to look and BE awesome.

How many points do you get to use for special without subtracting any of them?

You get 5 extra points to add without subtracting any of the starting values from 5.

Or, in other words, you get 40 points total to distribute between the 7 SPECIAL stats.

My build (subject to changes of course)

Reasoning:
The thing I hated the most in Fallout 3 on my first playthrough is that I thought: "Strength? That's for melee, I'm ranged" and consequently I couldn't carry anything and my use of heavy weapons was limited. Since then I've always gone for a strong character, but I loathe melee combat using this GameBryo engine. My build is mostly focused on utility, crafting and skill points, followed by stealth and sniping. I love utility perks such as Strong Back which means less Fast Travel and perks such as Silent Running, which means I'll no longer need to walk when sneaking to be quiet (so I don't have to hold in Shift).

I haven't added skills since I can't be bothered to do the math on it, but I'll probably meet the requirements of the next perks I'm taking and I also learned from FO3 to invest at least some points in my primary weapons skill on every level. I'll likely go for Sneak, Barter and Repair to get the high perk requirements satisfied.

Traits:
  • Good Natured - I don't intend to use melee and unarmed skill so I gain 10 skill points
  • Wild Wasteland - Pop culture references? Yes, please.

SPECIAL:
  • ST 8 - For carrying capacity
  • PE 4 - Perk requirement (+1 from Intense Training at level 2)
  • EN 8 - For implants, once I get the EN implant I can get them all
  • CH 1 - Dumping Charisma since it only affects companions, which I don't intend to use
  • IN 8 - Skill points please
  • AG 6 - Perk requirement
  • LK 5 - Perk requirement

Perks:
  • 2 - (2) Intense Training (+PE for perk requirement)
  • 4 - (4) Educated (more skill points)
  • 6 - (4) Comprehension (more skill points, I intend to explore everything and find most books)
  • 8 - (8) Strong Back (more carrying capacity)
  • 10 - (8) Pack Rat (more carrying capacity)
  • 12 - (12) Silent Running (no more holding in Shift while sneaking)
  • 14 - (14) Jury Rigging (obvious)
  • 16 - (16) Finesse (pew pew)
  • 18 - (18) Better Criticals (pew pew)
  • 20 - (20) Grim Reapers Sprint (even when nerfed it's still a good choice)
  • 22 - (22) Nuka Chemist (more schematics? Don't mind if I do)
  • 24 - ???
  • 26 - (26) Nerves of Steel (pew pew)
  • 28 - ???
  • 30 - ???

Constructive critism is welcome, especially if I missed up with the points or forgot a requirement or something. You can comment on my playstyle and offer a tip, but I'm not likely to go melee or anything despite my Strength and I probably won't invest in more sniper perks since I prefer the crafting/utility ones as I've already mentioned.

Edits:
  • -2 PE & -1 LK to get +3 in EN due to the implants. This means I'll need implants to PE, AG, LK in order to keep the perk requirements by level 18. I hope that's doable, time will tell. I also change my Intense Training to AG at level 2 to PE.

i won't be taking tag! and i won't be taking education(go with comprehension intstead) either. and i'll go with an INT of 8 until i find the implant.
still, it'll be enough for a decent build.
i'll still have at least 406 points from the level ups and another 208 from the skill books to spare and there are your, roughly estimated, 230ish base points.
if i do a quick'n dirty check, it looks like this

T - target
B - base points
SB - skill books
L - points required from level ups

Skill T B SB L
Guns 94 32 16 46
Repa 100 32 16 52
Lock 85 32 16 37
Med 70 17 16 37
Sci 75 17 16 42
Ene 94 11 16 67
Sne 50 11 16 23
Sur 60 11 16 33
Uam 25 11 16 -2
Mel 25 11 16 -2
Bar 30 11 16 3
Exp 40 17 16 7
Spe 70 17 16 37

818 230 208 380

380 would mean, i'd have at least 26 further points to spend, as well as a couple more, depending on when i'll be getting the INT implant.
looking ok for me

There are only 51 books in the entire game. So if you divide 51 books by 13 skills, you get somewhere around 3 or 4 books per skill. So don't count on raising any skill more than 9 points with books, or 12 if you take the Comprehension perk.

I hope a lot of people aren't assuming they'll be able to put those 153 or 204 skills from books where ever they want, cause that ain't gonna happen.

all in all, you're just another brick in the wall :whistling: ;)

51/13=4
3(4)pts per book= 12(16) per skill

51 divided by 13 is 3.9.

There can't have 3.9 books per skill. You can't round physical objects up to the next whole number or keep them as a fraction. It means different skills will have different numbers of books. Likely some will have 3 and others 4, hence my math above.

Take Educated, freqnasty! You need a refresher on being another brick in the wall! :P

Just for the record, that song is extremely corny.

And 3.9 is so close to 4 it is sufficient to assume that 9 out of 10 books will raise the skill by 4, and not by 3.

3.9 is not the number of skill points the books raise.

Every book raises your skill points in its corresponding skill by +3. If you have the Comprehension perk, every book increases your corresponding skill by +4.

It is the number of physical copies of the actual BOOKS available for each skill. You cannot round the 3.9 number. All 3.9 means is that the available 51 skill books are NOT evenly divided between all the skills.
