Planning your perks.

Post » Fri May 27, 2011 11:44 am

http://www.gamebanshee.com/falloutnewvegas/perks/level2.php has a great (but slightly incomplete) list of perks for all levels up. Needles to say, if you don't want to know the perks, don't click or read this topic. Hopefully this isn't counted as 'spoilerish' information (since it's in the manual, if F3 is anything to go by) - I've no desire to check out the spoiler forum to check for a similar topic, and can't find a similar topic. If there has been one up, apologies - mods please close (or preferably merge, since I couldn't see one).

My build will be identical to my main F3 character; will have Guns, Medicine and Repair tagged, S: 5, P: 5, E: 5, C: 5, I: 8, A: 7, L: 5. Might have to change my P and L for Better Criticals, since I won't have perk points to waste on Intense Training. Feedback on that build?

New Vegas looks like it has some very tasty perks indeed.
Here's what I'll be taking:
Level 2: Either Rapid Reload or Hunter, if I can put enough points into Survival.
Level 4: Educated is the obvious choice, especially considering that the 'master of all' days are behind us. Comprehension is another good one.
Level 6: Out of these, I'd go for Toughness - although I'll probably use this slot for Comprehension.
Level 8: Some really good ones here. Strong Back is my first choice, then Living Anatomy.
Level 10: Finesse. Some fan favourites from F3 coming back!
Level 12: Hmm. Fast Metabolism returns, but I'd use this slot for Living Anatomy from Level 8 I think. It's here that 'Long Haul' appears, although there's no way my Barter (or END) will be high enough.
Level 14: Centre of Mass is interesting, but the clear choice is Jury Rigging.
Level 16: Better Criticals is back, but I'll need more P and L for that. Action Boy's always a solid choice IMO, but Weapon Handling may be a lifesaver.
Level 18: None look that great for my build. Will be using this slot for Centre of Mass, I think.
Level 20: Grim Reaper's Sprint, duh.
Level 22: Again, one for another choice for my build.
Level 24: Ditto, which is a good thing. Only one new perk here? Hmm...
Level 26: As above. Might use Intense Training in the last few ones to bump up P and L, then take Better Criticals.
Level 28. As above. I don't plan on taking than many Rads, and if I do my Medicine skill will keep them down.
Level 30: Unknown as of yet.

So, thoughts?

I haven't decided my perks yet.

It's good to plan ahead but you shouldn't play your perks yet until you've experienced what the wasteland is throwing at you. :fallout:

All I know is that I will be using Guns, Survival, and maybe Sneak or Medicine. I intend to play on hardcoe mode too, my starting stats are probably gonna be something like 5 STR, 5-7 END, 5-6 AGI, 7-8 INT, 5 Luck.

My 4th skill will probably be speech or barter, probably both I'm not sure. That's why I'm going for higher intelligence so that I can get more skill points per level. Maybe even 5 in all stats and 6END, 9INT.

Perhaps why I couldn't find a similar topic, although we have similar discussions for skills and have discussed odd perks before (from the GameSpot article). The GameBanshee article isn't a dodgy mag scan and doesn't appear to be illicitly leaked, so I don't know why it was, unless the info is considered too spoilerish?

@ Bam; Be prepared! We can hopefully jump into the action without contemplating our navals and debating our perks when they come up. Although you're right, a lot of it will depend on a lot of stuff we don't know yet.

@ Terror of Death; these are by all accounts the regular levelling up perks - apparently there are quest specific ones, but I've no desire to spoil anything for anyone, particularly myself...

I'm not sure i think someone may have jumped the gun. I've been talking with one of the moderators and he's going to check it out. As far as i can tell it's perfectly legit.

I don't think theirs anything wrong as long as they don't go release spoilers about the main quest or side quests. If they did then I would have a problem with that

Actually i meant whoever deleted the thread about it i posted.

Anyway sorry to derail the thread Lorca1. I'm still working on my perk list at the moment i'm surprised some of the lower level perks have rather high skill requirements.

It's because they want you to pour all your skill points into one category instead of spreading them around

While I do love building perk lists, I don't usually start until I know what weapons are available. What I usually do is pick out one weapon that I would love to use for a majority of the game, then build my perk list to be optimized around that one weapon. I can already tell you, though, I can already forsee me selecting a lot of gun-related perks.

Big kudos for posting this list. :tops: Now I at least have an idea what's going to be available to me.

Indeed, it complements the lack of overall skill points compared to Fallout 3. Picking a skill and investing is rewarded in perks, attempting to become a haphazard jack of all trades results in a mastery of none. I think this is why it's also worthwhile to look at and debate the perks, to assess the relative merits of the various skill paths.

Oh, and Sojor - kudos should go to Ausir of The Vault, who linked it on his blog over there.

Won't plan anything out really.
I'll pick my SPECIAL and skills and then I'll just see whether or not I can take a perk I want or not.

Did anybody else have to turn up the brightness in Fallout 3? When I first went into megaton at night, I couldn't see 5 feet in front of me. Would turning up brightness negate Friend of The Night Perk

Some games really do have ridiculous default lightning settings.
Worst is when I change it to the brightest and it's still dark as hell.
But for Fallout 3 it worked out fine.
Night should be really dark.

In Fallout 1 and 2 you took a penalty to your accuracy for trying to shoot at people during the night or in otherwise dark places (such as inside dark caves or abandoned vaults).

I'm guessing that this perk might exist because they brought those penalties back and Friend of the Night offsets a VATS penalty. That's only a guess, though, because the developers should be well aware we can just adjust our brightness settings.

wonder if you can have mysterious stranger and miss fortune at the same time.
Some of these perk requirements are messing up my builds. Now I'm debating whether to take certain perks for their effectiveness or just taking role play perks and see where it gets me.

Seems training is returning.

This will help for perks that are a good one point away from our build.

It seems the build I want to go for contradicts with the matching perks.

Hopefully this will help out a bit.

I'm kind of glad they brought it back. sort of.

Ahaha, I have an idea for a massive DPS (high crit) character with the traits Fast Shot and Built to Destroy. Main combat skill would be Guns. Secondary skills would be Repair, and Survival or Medicine.
S-4
P-6
E-5
C-1
I-8
A-6
L-10

As for perks...
2- Rapid Reload
4- Educated (alternatively, Comprehension or Run n' Gun)
6- Run n' Gun (alternatively, Comprehension)
8- Cowboy (Toughness if not enough melee)
10- Finesse (high crit build)
12- Toughness (Cowboy if not enough melee)
14- Jury Rigging (Toughness if not enough repair)
16- Better Criticals (the reason Perception is not 1)
18, 20, 22, 24, 26, 28- Toughness (alternatively, Jury Rigging or pick from a bunch of fillers until repair is high enough), then fillers that add damage and stuff

I'm thinking of dropping Run n' Gun for a damage filler or Educated AND Comprehension, as my character wont be very accurate anyway (Fast Shot). OR, I can replace a Toughness with Intense Training (PER) and lower my original PER to 5 (increase INT to 9), then take Toughness as a filler.

Oh, this is a no-VATS build.
