Lets See How Many Girls Who Like Skyrim

Post » Tue May 08, 2012 6:53 am

I think you'd be surprised by how many women are gamers. It's not something we always like to bring attention to. From non-gamers we face the stigma of being a 'loser' or people think we're weird for liking such a traditionally male-dominated hobby - although, this is starting to fade as gaming becomes more common. Still, you'd be surprised at the looks mothers give me when I'm working at GameStop and I'm talking to their sons about video games. It's like they're checking me for abnormalities to explain why I like video games.

Even in the gaming community we have it rough. Everyone knows about the heckling we get online. Many men will make it clear they assume women gamers are fat/ugly/socially awkward - just because they play video games. Even worse, imo, is that women get labeled as an 'attention [censored]' simply for revealing, or refusing to hide, their gender. One of the reasons I am an 'outted' female gamer on forums like these is to try and break down these stereotypes. I hope in the future it gets easier to be both female and a gamer, because I am proud to be both and don't feel like hiding either.

....sorry got a little OT and rant-y. Whoops :)

I agree with you....Outside of this forum, I tend not to tell people about my obsession with TES or the even the fact that I'm a gamer. Although it probably has more to do with the fact that I'm a PhD student right now, more than the fact that I'm female...I guess because I'm afraid all of the non-gamers will associate being a gamer with being a slacker or something.

Woman gamer here. I think I'm too old to be called a girl. I think that stops when you're no longer carded to buy booze. :-)
Its all a matter of opinion as to weather or not you concider yourself to be a girl, a woman or both. And my mom still gets carded at bars and she is almost fifty so that dosen't mean anything.
Seariously, no Joke.

LoL I am wondering if the girls profiles have increased in views since this thread!
Seriously, though I love gaming with women, they usually bring reason and a level of calmness to a game that I enjoy. Much more then teenage, adolescent, testosterone rages that I often come across. More power to 'Gamer Chicks' I rekon.
Dunno how I ended up with a missus who hates computer games though..thats an irony

Ha! I am not a very calm gamer. But most of my friends are male, so their testosterone permeates my life. :D

I get what you say about a missus who hates gaming... I ended up with a guy who hates gaming!

I always try to get him to play with me, but he won't. He played Blur with me once, but that was it for him. We are lucky to have significant others who at least let us indulge in our gaming habit, even if they won't participate. My fiance knows I'll be MIA this weekend, and he made plans so that he doesn't sit at home making me feel guilty. Lol

I don't get why some girls hate gaming so much. I usually get one of two reactions from guys... either it's awesome, or it's weird. Girls, it's always the same unless we are good friends. They think I'm ridiculously strange.

by chance I grew up with a few girls who game too! so I think its great that they play games!

one of em is very good with fps (halo) and can own me sometimes which is cool! but I guess that with some guys it will crush their ego's. when we play halo split screen online some guys flip if I tell em they got beaten by a girl:D

Hilarious

edit:

nice quote

I've never found it necessary to hide or pretend to be something I'm not and I'm a woman who has been playing games online since Quake back in the late 90's. The only person whose opinion of my physical appearance matters is my partner who I have been living and gaming with for 16 years now. :)

Best not play with me if you are looking for someone calm for multiplayer games though - I used to get asked to 'be more ladylike' when I went to lan parties (no lie) - hey, if I'm getting fragged alot I swear - sue me.

I'm a girl, I played Oblivion and will be playing Skyrim. My boyfriend pre-ordered Skyrim for me as an early anniversary present even though he's not interested in RPGs.
