The new project is most likely Fallout 4. But im just guessing.

They are likely to make Fallout 4 before a new TES... so we at least look at the absolute minimal 5 years if they do. Plenty of time for an ES MMO to act as a filler and give fans something to do why waiting for a new game in the Single Player main games.

Correct. So if no MMO can beat WoW, why be an MMO then? Why compete with WoW?
And don't forget, Blizzard themselves have yet to release info on the Titan Project. Why go head to head with Blizzard?
Elder Scrolls do excellent single player RPGs, so be that way. There isn't any need to make an MMO.

There is money to be made there, and Zenimax Online was set up to make MMO's... because obviously Zenimax wanted to get into that market. I would imagine they went with TES because they own the IP, and because doing Fallout, the only other IP that would really make since as an MMO was tied up in legal issues back then. This does not mean there not going to make Single Player Games, different part of the company set up to do something different.

Also as to why an MMO, see the above post... it acts as a filler.

Of course they'll say that, no one will say "Oh if we fail we're finished, but we still gonna do it anyway"

anolyst, who study how much these companies make and have... said it would have only cut into %20 of earnings had it failed.

I beg to differ. Look at Ion Storm, the amount of money they spent was rediculous, im not joking.
I remembered John Romero had like 8 Ferraris at that time? And the building they bought was so lavishly made.

1. They do NOT compare to Zenimax, they are one developer with barley any successful games. EA, THQ, TAKE 2, these companies compare to Zenimax.

2. They went out in the mid 2000's, back when the market for video games was very different... and no where as profitable as today.

Why does it matter? If you don't like the product, you don't buy it, simple as that. You are simply not the target audience - ZeniMax is not wrong for that. They are only "wrong" if they make a product that is broken. They are not wrong because they made a product you don't like. In that case, you simply have the option of not buying it. But going on a crusade to make your voice heard to make sure they "know" the error of their ways is ridiculous. I don't like World of WarCraft. I am not going to go on the WoW forums and complain about how bad I think that game svcks, and all the things I think Blizzard did wrong. I am just simply not going to buy that game nor subscribe to it. That is the extent that I need to vocalize my opinion. Me going on the WoW forums to rant and rave about how bad that game svcks is going to 1.) do absolutely nothing productive and 2.) only piss people off who do enjoy the game and want to discuss it without people like me running around everywhere talking about how bad the game svcks.

I've been playing the series since Daggerfall. I followed Morrowind's development since it was some half-wireframe screenshots. I've defended every major change that Bethesda made in the series because I saw the logic behind the changes, even if it wasn't what I would have done in similar circumstances. I've accepted the TES series for what they made it. If I'm somehow not in the target audience for a game based on that series, there is something wrong.

I have made, for the most part, nothing but positive posts about the Elder Scrolls games up to this point and this game.

Except like cigarette smokers and alcoholics they of course don't see anything wrong with what they use and what they perceive as "right".

I'm saying if it was wrong they wouldn't see it and would defend what they enjoy doing to the death.

But yes I think MMOs are bad the for gaming industry health. After the break out success of WoW and Everquest, a lot of game companies eye that residual revenue and say "We can do that".

Just because you can doesn't mean you should. But I cannot fault a company for trying to make money. Especially if people are dumb enough to give it to them.

Why are MMO's bad for the health of the gaming industry? That doesn't even make sense.

MMO's can be a very legitimate genre when done right. Unfortunately, they haven't been done right since WoW.

For me personally, MMO's ruin the gaming industry because they encourage developers to design generic games balanced on large scale play instead of focusing on single player or small group experience, in a format that requires the player to 'grind' out play in a repetitive manner to achieve any goals or rewards. Because gameplay needs to be updated frequently to appease the customer, the development process gets sloppy, short term solutions are the norm and longevity of the product is largely ignored.

All of this results in a mindset that encourages the industry to focus on short term design solutions and cut development time to fit a model of turnaround that is a detriment to quality gaming.

If you've come across an MMO that doesn't fit that description, please let me know.

Which is bad because MMOs cost a lot of time and money to sink into. When they flop it can hurt the company, sometimes closing it out right.

MMOs are not bad for the gaming industry just by virtue of being a MMO. Perhaps I misspoke. They are bad because SO many floods the market. Since non free to play ones requite usually $10 to $15 a month to play and usually require a major timesink, you only have so much time and money to invest in an MMO. Warcraft works because it can hold its subscribers for the most part. I know a lot of people that play Warcraft, for the Majority of them thats the only MMO they do play. They try others like Star Wars but go back to Warcraft. about half those people I know who play Warcraft that is the only game they play at all.

If you enjoy smoking who am I to take it away from you. You can have your smoking as long as I can still keep my Single player elder scrolls, I'm happy.

Nailed it on the head and said better than I said.

Long story short, if you are a MMO fan then taking an experience we both love (Elderscrolls fans, or we wouldn't be so passionate to discuss it!) and bringing it to a MMO genre seems like an awesome idea and a cool way to share it with your friends.

If you are not an MMO fan then all you see is an Elder Scrolls skin a generic mmo mesh, that will take away many of the features you know and love from the series. Also the MMO seems threatening because while it is a different team making the game (i believe) if it does do well it can threaten the existence of the single player Elderscrolls experience. "Why do single player if you're making bank on the MMO?"

So I have been here since the hype for Skyrim and I was all pumped up! But I went on the forums everyday to see at least like 7 people complaining that Oh the graphics could have been better, Oh the gameplay looks horrible and blah blah blah! it turned out to be one of my favorite games and so many others and the ones who complained lost out. So why are you hating on the elder scrolls online? Like really? *sigh* seems like Bethesda cant do nothin right these days...

I absolutely LOVE Skyrim... but that doesn't mean that I don't have complaints about it.

The forum is simply where people come to voice complaints.

If I was 100% happy with the game I wouldn't even be on the forums... which is the case for most people.

This is why you see a lot of complaints on the forums.

Why are MMO's bad for the health of the gaming industry?

Because instead of encouraging consumers to purchase multiple game titles, which helps many studios and publishers create and sell new products, MMO publishers try to keep a huge portion of the gaming community playing only their game.

A healthy thriving game market is bad for MMOs because there's more and better game choices available. This means that consumers will be more inclined to purchase other titles, and spend less money on the MMO's subscription service.

Notice how the (mostly) MMO free console market has a a much greater selection of AAA games, despite the fact that PC gamers are actually the larger consumer base.
