PS3 Release for Dawnguard - Thread #30

Post » Sun Nov 18, 2012 8:48 am

But on the actual subject of Dawnguard. You say it's overpriced, and I agree, but how much do you think they should have charged for it?

Well i compare them to Fallout 3's DLC that were 10 €/$ piece, and i saw nothing in Dawnguard that justifies twice that price. Still, i'm not complaining about the 13€ price i got it for from a sale.

Sure it's got two new areas to explore, but they are like Blackreach, only used for running trough it to where you need to go, and a simple find items sidequests :meh:

Final Fantasy VI is still my favorite of the bunch. Haven't played XIII-2 yet, and Versus XIII is still in the ether somewhere.

Getting back on topic though, what do you think will happen if 11/11/12 comes and goes and Bethesda still hasn't said anything about DLC for the PS3?

The rage from PS3 players will flare up again and Bethesda will still throw out the "we're working on it" posts. Or, they will temporarily placate us with patch 1.8, again saying it improves memory and stability issues as if that ever works.

The real issue they are going to run into is when they inevitably try to sell their Skyrim GOTY version to the masses. Right now, the PS3 version would be no different than the original release. So, what do they do about that? Just leave the PS3 out of the picture catching all kinds of hell from fans and the media alike? Or, do they do a quick "duct tape" job on it, add the DLC, and try to sell it in an obscenely broken state, again catching all kinds of hell from fans and media? Either way they are screwed unless they do what we have been calling for which is a total rewrite, reprogram, and rebuild. Very expensive for the company to do for a fan base that probably won't believe them when/if they come out and say they did it, let alone pay a full $60 retail price for it.

Like I've said before, right now instead of concentrating on the game, something that can't be fixed, they are most likely working on damage control. They are working on how to come out and say they made a mistake with the PS3 version of Skyrim, that they know the game is broken, it will stay broken, and they are sorry without hurting potential sales of their next release before they finally give up on the PS3 console. Let's be real, the next Fallout is probably already in the production stage with all three consoles in mind. If you were Bethesda, how would you get PS3 players to buy it after the utter disasters that were Fallout: New Vegas and Skyrim? They ran into that problem after F: NV, that is why Pete Hines came out with the posts/lies we all know and hate to get us to buy Skyrim. The PS3 fan base will not fall for that again. Although, for all we know they are currently scrapping the PS3 division that is working on the next Fallout. Skyrim may be their swan song on the PS3 console. Not a something to be proud of, or an honorable way to go out, but sometimes it is best to admit one is defeated and give up.

Wasn't Dishonored developed that way as well?

I'm not sure. I didn't follow Dishonored development and from what I heard, it's actually a short game so I'm even less interested in how it was developed. I don't buy short games or games with little replay value. On top of the whole thing about not wanted to purchase a Bethesda or Bethesda-related product because of Skyrim (Zenimax included), I just did not follow Dishonored at all.

Still, if it was, good for them because that's the way it SHOULD be done.

Don't care for AC never have and as far as exclusive DLC goes that's nothing new to AC on PS3, Don't get why anyone is crying over it. If you have not gotten use to it after all these years..your just well..sad.

I'm with Azrim on this. Nothing about Assassins Creed really appeals to me. There is a lot of content in the game, and I give credit for that as well as an awesome story (at least the first two), but the gameplay itself just doesn't suit me. It might be a PS3-lead game, but it's just not my type of game. PS exclusives and PS lead games that I enjoy are GT, MGS, and FF. And only one of those games is exclusive to Playstation anymore in their recent or upcoming titles.

I will say though, I didn't purchase my PS3 for exclusives because I purchased both. I just still have the PS3 because it still works. For me, Xbox is 0 for 2...PS3 is 1 for 1.

Fallout 3 is just as broken with dlc added. Lets not forget that too.

Too right. Oblivion also had issues once one got to a high level or bought the GOTY version and thought it was a good idea to play as a vampire for a bit or visit the Shivering Isles.

The only difference between what Bethesda has done in the past and their current handling of the Skyrim disaster is the amount of media attention. New Vegas had the exact same issues. The media did not make a big deal of it. Bethesda released all the DLC, completely breaking the game. The media did not notice. The Ultimate Edition was released broken out of the box with no hope of ever getting fixed. Only the people that bought it said anything. Fast forward to the present. Skyrim is Fallout: New Vegas all over again. This time, the media is presenting Bethesda's shortcomings for the world to see. This time, every mistake Bethesda makes is getting front page attention on sites like IGN. This time even Playstation magazine ran a story about Skyrim and it's colossal failings on the PS3 console. People that have never heard of Bethesda that may have considered purchasing the next Fallout title are starting to think twice about it.

Still gets DLC before skyrim on PS3 XD

Because something gets an exclusive is no reason to get a game or not get a game. XBox got timed exclusive from Skyrim and GTA4, and I still bought those games on launch and Xbox had a much longer timed exclusive from Rockstar than Bethesda.

I've beaten FF13 and FF13-2 so far working on FF9 and FF7.

Side note: Just found a Minecraft video of someone who built a giant functioning toilet

7 is always argued against 6 as best in the series. Still, it's amazing the title got bigger as time went on when it's first title was underwhelming when compared to it's competitor. Just remember, Phantasy Star set the tone that all others followed.

You forget that the $780 million gets sliced and diced around something like http://unrealitymag.com/index.php/2011/04/29/how-your-60-video-game-is-chopped-up/

This is why I won't buy Dishonored because even though it's developed by Arkane, Bethesda still gets the biggest piece of that pie.

Seriously? Noticeable lack of DLC, but they throw in other "goodies" like a t-shirt? Hmmm.

What is that all about?

Gee, sign me up to buy it twice!

The lack of DLC points me to two conclusions. They are either going to release this "Premium Edition" thing AND a GOTY version, or more likely, the DLC for the PS3 console is not coming, and they are done with it. This looks like the only way they can release their standard "let's make money from the game again" version, yet differentiate it from the original release. All they are adding is a shirt, some books, a map, and a special goody for the PC crowd. The game itself is no different. I really doubt they would try to re-release the same game twice after all the issues they have had with the original, but what do I know? To me, doing it twice would seem kind of expensive, and for what? If they wanted to sell some t-shirts, I would think they could find alternative avenues in which to do so.

There is a thread on the general board discussing this. To summarize though: It's a collectors edition for the base game. The PS3 cover box is probably a marketing tactic to regain some PS3 popularity because they have failed at their jobs thus far and want to do a quick money grab. It's a usual marketing tactic. Sort of how a Presidential candidate picks their running mate (for Vice President). They choose someone that is a bit "opposite" in image to attract voters who wouldn't normally vote for the candidates image, at least they get the other guy in the 2nd in command post.

Of course, collectors editions are only worth it for games that are worth collecting. On PS3, it definitely isn't so they're pushing the PS3 cover box because it's by far their weakest area of support from the consumers due to their lack of .... competence? Trying to find the right word, but that's the best I could come up with.

What's sad is they think PS3 players will drop another, supposed $78, for the same broken game and a shirt. How stupid do they think we are? This is supremely insulting and I take it as a slap across the face. I was on the fence for a while about purchasing another Bethesda title, you know, after extensive research of every review I could find and letting others be the guinea pigs, but now I don't think I will ever give them one penny again.

Found this article this morning and tweeted it to Pete Hines. He still hasn't responded and I've been tweeting at him for 2 days. Damn good article.

http://www.product-reviews.net/2012/10/29/skyrim-dawnguard-recognition-mystifies-ps3-owners/

EDIT: The article is about how Bethesda has claimed another GOTY award from the Golden Joysticks and we still don't have any DLC.

Out of all the internet mags that have covered this ongoing issue, Product-Reviews usually does a great job. They make a statement then give both sides of an argument.

@ the article itself, i'm not at all surprised. Criteria for the awards Bethesda won for Skyrim don't take showing disregard for ~30% or 4 million customers into the formula to determine the winners.

I've also been reading that people want the rumored Dragonborn DLC to have a 30 day exclusive period for PS3. Why? How does that compensate us for our wait for Dawnguard on PS3? If we're to be compensated, I want to get something at a price cut (which I know is unlikely). It'd be nice to get something like Hearthfire for free.

Oh that's just spite talking when ppl bring up a exclusivity period for the next DLC on PS3. I try to make a comment against that everytime i see it. No good would come of it at all.

As to a discount on DLC for PS3 customers, i'm against that too actually. I just want the promised opportunity to purchase DLC that Bethesda made to all their customers. Nothing more. Barring that, the only real concession i want from Bethesda is to revisit the idea of letting PS3 users get some of the content locked into the main DLCs in the form of purchasable item packs, lore be damned.

Yeh, no discounts. Though if a price drop were to occur before it's release, or there is a bundle going on during it's release, I expect that to be the price.

No i didn't. I said and meant gross. Thanks for reposting the link to that graphic though, i'm sure most didn't bookmark it last time you put it up.

I did however.

Anything to actually say on the thought i had?
You said and meant gross, yet in the same breath you talk about the actions of a company that sees very little of that gross profit. I'm sorry, but how is that a valid criticism?

Besides, it's a stupid criticism to level at a company developing at the end of a console cycle. Why the heck would they hire a PS3 team when Skyrim is the last game they'll make on that console?

@1-I said gross because that's what you pay your employees from. What's left after payroll, taxes, facility upkeep, R and D, etc is net. Said gross and meant gross.

@2-It could very easily be said that it was stupid of Bethesda to not have set up a real PS3 dev team years ago and save themselves the embarrassment of not being able to work on a console that is at the end of its prime life cycle.

And as to why hire a PS3 team now, you kinda answered that yourself. PS4 is just around the corner and Fallout 4 as well if rumors are to be believed. What better way to future-proof than to take the time now(that should have been done years ago) and set up a team that is going to be able to work hand-in-hand with Sony into the future?

Oh and back at your helpful chart, Bethesda in some shape or form is going to be wearing the hats of Developer, Publisher, and Marketing. So they are seeing 60% of every sale of Skyrim, or ~$468 million gross. If they can't find enough to set aside for staffing a team that they seem in sore need of, i just don't know what to say.

I agree. I wait months and months for DLC and we get it first for 1 month? Hearthfire for free makes sense. Not too big. Maybe get Dawnguard and Hearthfire together for $18?

Seems a little hostile. I can understand being frustrated with Bethesda, but what's your gripe with vsions and his family? Last I heard he was more of a art/modeling kinda person, not a programmer for the PS3 DLC. With all due respect to the man, I doubt he has the skills required to make what you want to happen happen.

Also, frustrated as I am about this whole sordid affair, your constant half-cursing makes it really hard to agree/identify/sympathize with you in anyway at all.

I won't deny that the PS3 Fallout titles didn't have game engine issues, but they tended to surface considerably later in the game FallOut NV worked pretty well for me, till the DLC got kicked in.

I can't agree that Oblivion had significant game engine issues at all. The two issues that get the most discussion, the vampire cure glitch, and the Animation freeze, were both the result of a singular break point in code sequence. Both could be easily patched if Bethesda had wanted to, in fact the A-bomb occurs on all platforms but usually only after some extended play time, 350+ hours on a save file etc. Those playing on a PC could and still can fix it, once they learn where to look. The vampire "Cure" glitch was on the GOTY PS3 version only, and was possible to fix if you simply picked up a used PS3 original version disc and popped it in for a brief period.

Neither of these things are ideal, but compared to what we got with Skyrimn, it really does 4Js work a grave injustice to even compare Oblivion to Skyrim from a engine performance perspective. I've little doubt if Skyrim ran even 90% as well as Oblivion did, we'd all be much happier campers, and probably up to date with our DLC as well. The point should be re- stressed. SKYRIM showed problems within it's game engine almost immediately. The earlier Bethesda gamebryo derivatives for the Fall Out titles were not as smooth running as Oblivion, but they were measuraeably better than Skyrims'. Bethesda pushed their sloppy coding issues well past the breaking point with SKYRIM.

WHAT IS YOUR SOLUTION BETHESDA !!!
