So, Red Mountain exploded destroying much of Vvardenfell

Post » Thu Mar 17, 2011 8:14 am

It is a testament to the strength of the TES universe's lore and storytelling in my opinion that learning this actually made me genuinely sad. I know that, lore-wise, the Dunmer may have had it coming. But after all that history, right or wrong, and after having "lived among them" in TES III for so long, I actually, literally, became sad when I read this. (And no, I'm not ashamed to admit that, nor do I think it's strange. It means I can still be emotionally engaged by fiction that I love.)

I am hoping Skyrim gives me enough to love that if it's ever destroyed, I'll feel similarly.

So did I. I think most of us did.

But ultimately you come to see that it's a good and exciting thing.

And yeah; if Skyrim has half as powerful an effect on me as Morrowind had, it'll be amazing.

On the bright side you could play Morrowind and roleplay as a "prophet" and warn them of their impending doom.

But now that I think about it, it just makes me sadder.

I believe there already was if I recall correctly. Eno Romari in Mournhold? He used to speak of some cataclysmic event I believe.

Haha, they all fled to Solstheim. When Hircine comes back for his hunt, he will have some extra prey besides the Skaal. Hahaha. I am actually laughing at this. Amusing.

He wasn't warning of the Red Year though. He wanted people to commit suicide so that the Dunmer people could call on an even greater body of Ancestors when the Oblivion Crisis occured. He ranted about the Daedra attacking.

I agree with you, I really did feel sad when I heard this. I think that's one of the things that made Morrowind so good - it was so immersive that you grew to love the Dunmer people, and we mourn the loss of them. That's the biggest advantage has over Oblivion. OB is better gameplay-wise (imo), but what it lacked was that feeling that you were truly in another world. If Cyrodiil exploded, I wouldn't care less about the Imperials.

I think that this sets up a new era for the Dunmer. Because of recent events, they'll likely become an even colder people (not just because they're in Solstheim). It's their lifestyles and hardships that made them how they are, and this will only have fortified that.

I wonder if we will get a Black Marsh game somewhere down the line, and return to Vvardenfell (or whatever it's been named under Argonian occupation lol.)

Black Marsh is pretty much uninhabitable for anything foreign. The only things that can live there are Argonians and other native species'. And even if we do, Argonia borders on the Morrowind mainland, so we wouldn't see anything nostalgic.

Unless it would take place in the small/large encampments around Black Marsh.

I had the opposite reaction, I was happy that they got what was coming to them, racist Dunmer! Ayleids didn't deserve to be pushed to near extinction with only a small group of Pure-blooded Ayleid's hiding in the Heartland Woods, all because they made all the other races slaves, they just didn't deserve it

And comparing the Dunmer to the Ayleids (as we know them) is pretty unfair, based on the sole similarity of a degree of institutionalized slavery.
They Ayleids are portrayed as the most cruel, evil thing to have ever existed. They had flesh-sculptures and tortured people for fun; as a mainstream aspect of their society.

Anyone notice that calling a race racist is bizarre? The very idea of race is racist, and everyone who considers themselves part of a race is probably going to be racist unless there's some commonly-held belief that racism is bad. Which Tamriel obviously lacks.

It was not quite mainstream I believe.

Gypsy Moth dustmemore insert - it should be noted here that it is always foolish to think of whole races sharing like minds. "Ayleid" is as much a metaphysical designation as it is a cultural one. Just like the earliest Chimer who orphaned themselves from the Velothi Exodites, but remain Chimer today, large numbers of Ayleids showed more interest in the immediate earthly needs of agriculture rather than the magical needs of concept-farming. This distinction becomes important later, when "Ayleid" begins to designate other, and ofttimes foreign, agencies.- http://www.imperial-library.info/content/nu-mantia-intercept

Meh, Morrowind going boom is expected. That place goes into constant conflict all the time, from the time being use as a battlefield of the past with the Emperor or the Dwemer, to the time that whole province got flooded by Vivec, to the fact that their border is always in battle, either with the Nords at the north or the Argonians at the south, to even the whole crap that place having to deal with Dagon when he spouted portals all over the place. The time when Nerevarine was there is essentially "peace" time in comparison.

Might have been more exciting if the series was to ever go back there to explore the ramifications of what happened, but the odd of this are slim. As is, it just seems a bit too off hand for me, making it hard to see the advantage of it all. Anyways, we'll see what comes of it.

Tamriel seems to be far less racist than many real-world societies I could name.

I dunno, Tamriel can be quite xenophobic. If anything, it was the imperial that somewhat made everyone tolerate each other at least, instead of yearly genocides.

The orsimer were subjected to genocidal campaigns from the redguards, bretons, and Tiber
If the nords supposedly killed all of the falmer
Pelinal HATED mer (which isn't a bad thing anyway)
The mer want to see all of humanity gone
The khajiit hate the bosmer for encroaching on Elsywer territory
The dunmer just hate everyone
The argonians recently purged anything not-argonian (including imperialized argonians)from Black Marsh
The Aleyids treated their human slaves worse than dirt
and more

That's historically, though. MOST of that is long gone by the time the events of any of the games come about. Even in Morrowind with slavery still legal, none of the Great Houses would exclude even an Argonian from joining on account of his or her race, which is telling of a meritocratic society. Hell, you could even become Arch Magister of Telvanni regardless of race. Not to mention all the many interracial relationships alluded to, written about or shown in these games and books. Remarkably, Tamriel seems to be a very cosmopolitan society while still living in what we'd recognize as archaic times.

But that's pretty much due to the imperials going around and telling everyone to behave and hug each other, or die.

Well, it's a problem of terminology... as is so often the case with the word "racist."

edit: wow, I quoted the completely wrong post and didn't notice for quite some time.

If you ask me I don't think the Argonians would be able to hold Morrowind short of slaughtering three quarters of the population. I think the worst hit would be the Ashlanders, I can't see them leaving Vvardenfell even if any of them survived the volcano.
