Skyrim is NOT an RPG.

The Elder Scrolls can no longer be classified as an RPG. It's an open world action game.

You play a role of a person, which can fight in an open world.

So it's all three.

I agree. Skyrim has almost zero character development, it's really disappointing.

The Elder Scrolls can no longer be classified as an RPG. It's an has transcended the genre in its revolutionary gaming experience.
I agree wholeheartedly. :tops:

Role Playing Game. A game in which you assume the role of a character in a fictional setting.

It's an RPG.

Edit: Since some of you seem to be misinterpreting this.

By taking on a role of a character, you are building that character, making choices and taking on it's responsibilities.

In Halo, you don't have the choice to side with the Covenant or Humans. In Call of Duty, you can't choose the Russians or the Americans. You don't build your character from the bottom up, by managing stats and selecting abilities.

It's hard to call any game an RPG until someone gives a good definition of what an RPG actually is.

Agreed.

If you choose to play pretend and role play in the world that's your bidniss. It however does not transform Skyrim into an RPG just because you play a role. By that logic Halo is an RPG since you play the role of Chief.

Skyrim is a firm Action/Adventure game. Its RPG elements are no different than Deus Ex HR

If it doesn't take 72 hours to get the ridge of the nose just so in the creation screen its not a true RPG. (Could never get into table top I'd roll the dice into a sock and swing them at people who took to long).
I agree sort of, its just the way the genre is going or has gone.

Well this is not true, it actually has more character developement than older elder scrolls games. Perks change a lot about your character. But it's lacking options, mainly in dialogue / quests and TES games never have had any real options.

This post is [censored] I have to say. What else could it be? You play as a person you make and have endless possibilitys. It's a game any "true" RPG player would dream of. Any people complaining that it's not an RPG have obviously never played an RPG. And besides, even if it is a "open world action game", is there something wrong with that? Nope. And atleast it's a good "open world action game".

You level up skills. That's what makes a game an RPG.

My Orc has a high skill in Two-Handed, which he has achieved by playing a ROLE that involves the usage of Two-Handed weapons. Because of this, he gets increasingly stronger in the usage of Two-Handed weapons, because that's what his ROLE'S main form of damage is. He also uses Heavy Armor, because he fits the ROLE of a slow, defensively inclined WARRIOR. He brings along a PARTY MEMBER, that plays the ROLE of a tank-oriented warrior, using a One-Handed weapon and Shield, because that's the PARTY MEMBER'S ROLE, to use that combo of weaponry.

My character reaches HIGHER LEVELS, which allows him to fight STRONGER ENEMIES as he progresses, and find STRONGER GEAR, as well as making it, if the SKILL fits his ROLE, which it does.

He ran a DUNGEON, killed enemies who had their own ROLES based on their names. Deathlords uses strong melee attacks and shouts, to fit their ROLE. Scourges used magic, some melee, and shouts, to fit their ROLE. He also had to solve a PUZZLE in the dungeon, allowing him to PROGRESS further.

He reached a higher LEVEL in this dungeon, and he was able to allocate personal PERKS to fit his ROLE, based on the STRENGTH of his SKILLS, which was achieved by using the SKILLS. He decided to place it in a perk that allowed INCREASED DAMAGE IN AXES, to fit his ROLE, which uses axes.

See what I'm saying?

[censored] and whine all you want, Skyrim is as much an RPG as any other TES game, if not more of an RPG.

I stopped bothering with such terms, especially when BioWare throws around the word "Streamlining". At any rate, TES is just godly in nature, one of the few still in tact franchises without the need for multiplayer. Thank Talos

When people stop using the excuse that RPG exists only in mind, is when people will agree it isn't much of an RPG. all those "endless possibilites" don't exist anywhere in the game. don't care about you're mind we're talking in context of the game, and in context of the game. there aren't much in choices.
