SOPA, PIPA, ACTA and other assorted Internet censorship.

There's a thingy set up so that radios and suchlike can play music without getting permission from every single artist (imagine the headache!); instead, they pay a single fee which then gets split between the relevant parties.

Well that explains that... :P

Is there a software equivalent?

I was just watching American Idol, yeah... go ahead flame away, and a thought crossed my mind.

How can contestants sing these songs without approval from their respective copyright holders?

Not exactly covered by SOPA and clones, but still somewhat topical.

probably the same way CDs can be sold using children instead of the original artists to sing the songs

I'm wondering more about why American policy should effect people outside of America.
Because they are Team America, World Police.

Doesnt work like that lol. Its funny that in a world where every person is just a click away from interacting with any other person in the world, some still hold the assumption that one countries policy ( especially one with such an impact on policy worldwide) will not effect them.
If this stuff is passed, it will be one step towards every person is no longer a click away from interacting with any other person.

Here's an interesting piece about certain statistics being botched. The long and short of it is that movie piracy definitely does not cost anyone US$250 billion per year and 750 000 jobs... it's closer to a tenth hundredth thousandth* of that.

*It really did take me three tries for my maths to catch up to the utter inaccuracy, though that's just for the USA. Worldwide would be around the hundredth mark.

EDIT: And an http://freegamer.blogspot.com/2012/01/silver-lining-of-megaupload-shutdown.html -- it reduces the exposure and creation of free (in the liberty sense) and independent works.

It's going to get passed, we have a majority government lol. I've said it for a long time, Americans may have elected Bush twice, but we've elected Harper three times. I guarantee this will quietly pass too, he got so much support from the west coast, which is predominately, you guessed it, entertainment industry.

The question is whether this a result from Canada being on the Special 301 priority watchlist. Case in point, http://www.guardian.co.uk/technology/2012/jan/05/us-pressured-spain-online-piracy?INTCMP=ILCNETTXT3487.

At least Canada doesn't have the power to force its will upon my country, let's hope it stays that way...

Does Canada even host any shady sites?
I don't see how in the short term this legislation will do anything at all, then again, that's probably the plan.

Methinks in five years the USA will say "Look, it worked in Canada"

At least there's no laws on the table here... our government is just getting the entertainment industry* and the internet industry (ISP's and that) sitting down together to see if they can work things out between themselves.

*Though not artists, as far as I'm aware :P.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't surfers paradise where the three big sewage pipes are? Might be Bondi, I haven't been to a big beach for a while.
