SOPA, PIPA, ACTA and other assorted Internet censorship.

All of them.

That's what they want you to think just pay more attention and you'll notice. Who knows perhaps my computer would or wouldn't exist.
It wouldn't exist because the companies wouldn't exist to make them. And now the internet might screwed because governments can't seem to take a hint on when to but the [censored] out on matters that have nothing to do with them.

As long as you don't mind funny coloured blood and don't feel a need to say no Jew has ever died*, I think it's not so bad (though a local would have a far better idea). Something they have going for them is that they appear to have some pretty good privacy protection laws and stuff.

*And are therefore entirely responsible for the world's current overpopulation .

Don't forget we can actually choose between different political parties, not like in other states where you can only choose between mid-right and far right. (based on the actual german political spectrum)

If I'd had any to begin with...
Charlie Chaplin once gave speech about faith in humanity. Its not entirely relevant to ACTA but it always makes me feel a bit better whenever I lose faith in humanity.
Greed has poisoned men's souls, has barricaded the world with hate, has goose-stepped us into misery and bloodshed. We have developed speed, but we have shut ourselves in. Machinery that gives abundance has left us in want. Our knowledge has made us cynical; our cleverness, hard and unkind. We think too much and feel too little. More than machinery, we need humanity. More than cleverness, we need kindness and gentleness. Without these qualities, life will be violent and all will be lost. The airplane and the radio have brought us closer together. The very nature of these inventions cries out for the goodness in men; cries out for universal brotherhood; for the unity of us all. Even now my voice is reaching millions throughout the world, millions of despairing men, women, and little children, victims of a system that makes men torture and imprison innocent people. To those who can hear me, I say, do not despair. The misery that is now upon us is but the passing of greed, the bitterness of men who fear the way of human progress. The hate of men will pass, and dictators die, and the power they took from the people will return to the people. And so long as men die, liberty will never perish
Bear in mind I selected the most relevant part. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QcvjoWOwnn4&feature=related there is the full speech.

Even with all this nonsense going on theres still a lot of people with the right intentions trying to stop things like ACTA from happening. By stopping and taking an interest in it all of us have contributed in some small way.

Could try asking the https://www.eff.org/. I'm sure they'd have some ideas on how to help with fighting it.

On a sidenote, next time you, the reader of this post, buys a Humble Indie Bundle, remember that part (or none, or all, if you so choose) of your payment goes to the EFF, so be generous if you can. They do, and have done for quite a while, a lot of work to defend the internet and its users.

And it's not just ACTA you have to worry about. http://www.lawfont.com/2011/03/11/us-proposals-for-ip-in-the-trans-pacific-partnership-leaked/! http://keionline.org/node/1091. Oh, and Europe's not a party to Pacific-only agreements, so it can't intervene where it would otherwise.

Not to derail the thread. Just thought it bears pointing out that countries are constantly making agreements without the public's knowledge. It's not the end of the world, or the internet.

I suspect it just means that a few years from now, there will be significantly less couch potatoes! (Also, more readers. Yay books.)

If I remember right. The courts in Canada have already ruled that you can share all the music and videos you want in Canada and not face fines or imprisonment.

I haven't read the full bill but I saw nothing about censoring the internet in that bill. Also there is another bill thats going though that was going to make having a link to a restricted site illegal. That was taken out because it caused a huge fit. So if there was a bill anything like SOPA in Canada I am sure I would have learned of it by now.

In other words, big companies will be (or are) our overlords in some way... :bolt:
Well, of course they are. They have centralized executive power over large sums of money, so they can hire a ton of lobbyists to browbeat congress into passing the laws they want passed. How many lobbyists do you have?

It's this use of silly acronyms that need to be stopped.

America, Cut The Acronyms.
I will now put in motion to create a new bill: The ACTA Bill (America, Cut the Acronyms).

[insert massive amounts of legal jargon that no one will read nor understand even if they were to read it]

All in favor of the bill say "I"

Then stop buying their products and they stop making money. Why does everyone seem to think that companies are evil? They aren't. Read my sig. for the real threat.

I didn't say they were evil. I said they have a lot more political power than individuals. I would also add that the way they use it is oftentimes hidden from the public for good reason. This is really undeniable. "Evil" implies that a corporation can have malicious intent, which is ridiculous. They exist to make money, and if they need to influence politics to do so (and are allowed to) they will...it's just their nature.

By the way, a lot of the most politically active organizations don't sell products for people to stop buying in the first place. The idea that any corporate entity can be stopped by a concerted effort on the part of consumers is a fallacy. Real money and control is kept far away from points of contact with things as unpredicable as the general public. The only way to prevent them from unfairly influencing politics is to reform their relationship with politicians. I won't say anything more than that since political discussions aren't allowed here.

As far as your sig...if you think there's only one threat to worry about you're overlooking a lot.

Government is just a word, an idea. Like any good idea, it is fallible, corruptable. Many people represent the face of the government. Soldiers, librarians, social workers, and so on. The question is 'What kind of regime is it?' Sometimes an autocratic regime is better than a democratic one, and vice versa. To label 'all government is evil' is ludicrious. But I really want to stop while I'm being vague since as Softnerd said, it's a touchy line between 'general politics' and 'detailed politics' around here.

That's what I thought as well. I know there are several programs available for pirates that mask IP's to make them look like their from Canada. As we have some great privacy laws here.

At least as far as I know, ISP's here are not allowed to look at what you download.

The exact solution is the same thing that happened in the US, inform as many people as possible about how bad the bill is.

Internet "Pirates" will always exist. It is impossible to stop them. What needs to happen is crackdown on Hackers and non-rpg modders (like you're modded controller for call of duty, and you're aimbots and the like). The same applies to those who use the internet to get our information. If these real threats to the internets were hunted, then theoretically, there would be less "pirates"

Quite frankly, if I had a work that was under copyrights I wouldn't want to be giving it out for free, I'd want to earn money off of it, I created it, I poured blood, sweat and tears into it, why should you get it for free?
I'd give people my music for free, so I don't even care because they got it for free. :teehee: Anyway, eventually one of these ridiculous bills are going to pass, and there will be riots people. There will be riots, and disorder, and we don't want that now, do we? /goldenitalianvoice.

But you can share music and movies you legally bought.

At least that is my understanding.

Oh yes and concership is bad...fight back canada.....go you...etc etc
Oh don't worry, I've hunted hagiis before and lived, those vertically defect bears won't stop my hide tanning.
That was the original choice since I could possibly find Nemo, but the prices were a bit expensive.
