Spell Creation is an integral part of TES magic!

Yes they do.

Absolutely not. You can't give yourself a 2000+ dmg dagger by accident. It requires some very deliberate actions to do so, in which you knowingly set out to break the game mechanics. To then come here and complain about "balance" as a result of the abuse/exploit you've deliberately carried out is beyond risible.

Absolutely yes. Especially when destruction does not even come close.

I'd call that a full circle.

I was pretty ambivalent to the removal of spell making at first, sure we lost the fun of tinkering with spells and such but we gained a variety of new spell types such as the thrower, runes etc
But i had no idea that they didn't scale and just become obsolete as you level, i don't know why they thought this was a good idea.

What i would like to see the most is some spellmaking close to alchemy and enchanting where you unlock spell types and effects that you combine to make new ones.
That might be abit far fetched, but i'd frankly be happy with just tinkering with the effects we have, for example i could change ice storm to do fire damage instead, or frenzy and increase their magnitude.
Instead of on target and on touch we'd have channeled, wave, projectile, exploding projectile, rune etc how great would that be? Would atleast somewhat make up for the loss of spelleffects like reflect damage and such.
Some control and flexibility would be such a great improvement to the magic system.

I like this, yes this is good

Thats not the same as having "no variety". All it does is cheapen any argument you may have by making it appear as though you haven't thought about it. Less <> none.

by the gods I wish people would just think about what they're typing.
What he means is compared to older entries in the series there is a serious lack in variety with the lack of spell creation and the lack of additional spells that use to be in the older games. I completely agree with everything he is saying compared to the other games there is nearly not as much variety and customization for mage characters and spell users. I for one would love the variety we had in Skyrim with the new effects, and spell creation.

Lets face it guys, My warrior character build should not be able to cast ANY spells at all, but as far as I know all TES games have allowed that...for playability reasons.
Its a game, I think our lives would be better if we looked for the flaws in our every day life with as much zeal as we do this game.

spell making is -was- an importat part in TES and should return. i did not use it much i do not understand the mindset of taking it out or even thinking it is a good idea to remove the choice (not to mention all the effects dissapearing for some effed up reason [did i really just type "effed"?], one of the effects i used most left [drain stamina, useful for a rogue who does not always want to kill the person who caught him] )

Exactly. The amount of variety we have in Skyrim pales in comparison to the huge amounts we had in Daggerfall, Morrowind, and Oblivion.

It's mind boggling that people are happy that we have significantly less than previous games in the series. It would be like if Ford announced that the next Mustang would have a 4 cylinder motor, no air conditioning, and the suspension of a minivan, and then seeing many of the Ford fans applauding the change. It does not make sense to me.

Keep in mind, a lot of Skyrim players never played Arena, Daggerfall or Morrowind. I'm sure there's some that never played Oblivion. However, there are plenty that have and are still in support of this dumbing-down. So yes, mind boggling.

Congratulations on fitting the definition of a fool.

This whole argument is foolish. All of you, from every side of the argument, keep repeating the same things and expecting other people's opinions to just change. When they don't, you just discount them and assume they're imbeciles. Never once did any of you, from any side of the argument, consider that the others had any sort of point, that they have the freedom to prefer one over the other, and instead decide that because you MUST always be right, anyone who disagrees with you is lesser than you. You're all idiots, every last bleedin' one of you.

I have an interesting question: who cares if you want spellmaking? Who cares if you don't? it's all opinion, and the only opinion that matters and ever should matter is the artist, the guy making the game. Because let me tell you something; for every two-bit superfan on the face of the earth, there's ten reasonable people who will simply enjoy what they're given, desiring more but never expecting it. Someone who appreciates something for what it is, instead of what they want it to be. You people? You're just an addled minority, the unpleasable base that has killed every wonderful thing that has ever existed.

So again, this thread is full of fools. Each and every one of you.

Even though I assume I am one of the idiots you speak of, I just wanted to say that I love this post. Every last bit of it.

We can only hope that people wake up and smell the cutting before TES 6 becomes a pure action game devoid of RPG mechanics.

All they did was add pretty animations. Gow the hell can anyone mistake that for a better magic system. They gutted magic.

A lot of people seem to though. *points down*

Spell Creation added more to the game, that's a good laugh. The only thing it added was a different effect to a standard spell and a name, otherwise it looks just the same as any regular spell. Only reason people are complaining about it getting removed is for RP reasons and game balance comes before Role Playing any day of the week.

Far too many people desire form over function. I don't care if it's pretty; I care if it's a fun and engaging system. Spell creation was that and also a unique system that few other games had. Now we have a generic, but pretty, system just like all the other generic, but pretty, systems that most of the other games with magic have.

.....I have nightmares about this. I already consider Skyrim to be mainly action with some RPGs elements thrown in as opposed to Morrowind which was mainly an RPG with some action elements thrown in.

In all fairness, Two Worlds 2 had a fun, engaging spell creation system. I still remember creating an AoE damage spell that left a drain life DoT on enemies before summoning a bunch of undead knights to mop up.

This confuses me as well. I hear defenders of the new magic system saying how deep it is. This makes no sense whatsoever, regardless of whether you like the new system or not. I've come to the conclusion that people confuse the meaning of the word "depth" with "shiny". While we did get (3) runes and a few other great casting methods, this in no way compensates for the massive amount of customization we lost due to a lack of spell creation.

In this long moronic rant, you seem to have forgotten something very important. That the developers at Bethesda actually seem to care about their fan base. A constant with Beth is that they look at what players are saying, critiquing and on their own creating with mods. And they in turn incorporate those elements as best they can with the scheme of future projects. So all the people here you think are foolish, are part of the process in making a better future game.

That horse you're on isn't as high as you seem to think. Might want to be careful when you open your mouth or someone might kick you in the teeth.

I never created spells in earlier TES games, but I do have a question.

Could you, in prior games, make a On Touch Chameleon/Invisibility Frenzy spell that would turn the target Invisible/X Chameleon amount and attack people?

If so, then spell creation should be forever in TES.
If not, then it should have and the system wasn't diverse enough.

Mobs scale from lvl 1 to lvl 50 I believe. What lvl does the current magic system "fail" in your opinion?

I do not play many mage centric chars myself so I do not know.

This is actually the first TES game I've enjoyed magic in. It was hideously broken in all the previous ones due to the limited types of spells, and broken scaling. It pretty much ended up being "craft a fire touch dot that ticks for XX DPS because anything else is a waste of time", make a new version when needed.

Spell creation is not going to happen. Having as many spells as we do now is already far too confusing and redundant. Just have two spells, one for healing and one for damage so it's a bit easier to understand

Spellmaking was useless clutter to 98% of the players. You couldn't create anything original or new. It was just a rehash of values found in other spells for the most part. Skyrim's problem isn't the lack of spell making but the lack of utility spells like feather & unlock, plus the best spell (the flame thrower) doesn't scale at all or there are no more powerful versions available to buy. The other annoying factor is there are no spell timer icons so any of the buffs you add, there is no indication that you have a buff on or not.

Yes. Doing things like that was quite fun! I also liked frenzy + massive health buff that made 1 guy kill 5 people. :vaultboy:

Hmmmm.

Bind 'X Weapon' + Invisibility to bind and invisible weapon to yourself would be quite cool.

As would Summon 'X Monster' + Invisibility...

Just have two spells, one for healing and one for damage so it's a bit easier to understand
And what's with all the weapons? Let's just have 1 weapon. Simple.
Why have 5 cities? Let's just have 1.
Why have so many dungeons and ruins? Let's just have 1 each.
And so many races to choose from when making a character....Nah, let's just have Nords, after all it's set in their homeland.
