Is it possible to have Serana as a companion even after Dawnguards main quest is done?

Yes.

Auriel's Shield is in the game? What does it do?

It absorbs the energy of blocked attacks. Power Bashing with enough energy stored up unleashes the energy to do a damaging pushback. With enough energy stored, it sends people flying similar to Fus Ro Dah.

Best I can tell, no. First thing I did this morning was head to the forge and try to upgrade Wuuthrad and my Silver Greatsword, neither one could be upgraded still.

It's a shame, I really hope Bethesda adds in the option to Smith items like these, and other items like Keening, so that they are viable at higher levels.

about the snow elves in dawnguard. are they like the elven races? do they look like an altmer for example or do they still look hideous like the falmer in vanilla

Promised? No, they're not in, and I don't recall them being "promised", it was never mentioned as anything more than a rumor/something players talked about.

A waraxe that does additional damage to Vampires. There's also a Heavy Shield, a 2H Warhammer, a Runed Shield and a Runed Warhammer.
