Tattoos!

I'm pretty sure the term "shallow" got its name for only looking far enough to perceive outward appearances.

But I don't want to derail a perfectly valid thread and I certainly don't want to start any flame wars, so I'll leave it at that.

I think what Frodo might've been saying is that it's shallow to judge somebody's personality based on their looks...i.e, going along with the stereotype that anyone with a tattoo is this, that and the other, without first getting to know what they're like. I could be wrong though >_<

Back on topic: What's everybody's opinions on tribal tattoos? Nowadays, the term 'tribal' covers a lot of different types of tattoo, but they do seem to be pretty overused?

I hope so, because then there'd be no disagreements between us whatsoever.

On the other hand, this:
all kinds of people take tattoos nowadays
is a faulty statement. Generally speaking, (note the emphasis) only certain types of people get tattoos. Now as implied, there is some "overflow" (for lack of a better term) and you shouldn't devolve into seeing people as stereotypes (to set certain minds at rest, I don't). But to be honest, I don't really like tattoos, and whether coincidence or not I don't normally like the people that wear 'em.

The purpose and nature of this question eludes me. Excuse me for a bit while I poke it with a stick and determine whether or not it's worthy of an answer.

I wouldn't say it's shallow to reject a woman for her tattoos. If you don't like the kind of character that comes with a person who's willing to do that to their body, that's entirely your business.
And just what kind of character are we talking about? You do realize that there are plenty of upstanding citizens that have tattoos who neither drink, smoke, or use drugs, don't you. You are prejudging people without knowing anything about them, I would go on about how I really feel about your comments here, but I'm not in the mood for warnings now.

if you said yes, then it would make sense why you don't like people with tattoos. that'd mean you don't give them a chance

I do not think this an either/or situation. Hypothetically speaking, I wouldn't give them as much of a chance. But that is not the same thing as giving them no chance at all.

At any rate, I've found that I can get along well enough with anyone online that such relatively superficial character attributes come into play infrequently, if at all. In other words, the presence of a tattooer in my general digital vicinity has little impact on my ability to converse and cooperate with such peoples through generally impersonal channels such as the internet. These things said, I sincerely hope that I fall within your zone of toleration... friend.

it's okay, i don't have any tattoos. we can be friends

seriously though, after talking to people on internet and bothering myself with "WHAT IF THIS COOL PERSON IS UGLY AS HELL" too much, i realized that i don't want appearance to matter with anyone. and it's refreshing.

This talk about tattoos made me remember a dream that I had a few months ago, in this dream I got http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y76/Caultus/dreamimage.jpg tattooed on the inside of my leg. Weird place for a tattoo, but it was just a dream.
It looks familiar, but I'm not sure how; I thought it was a rune, but I can't find anything similar, any ideas out of curiosity?

I hate tattoos. Sure, they might look cool now, but when you're 60, they'll be ugly as heck.

Lies. Everyone judges on appearances. It's instinctive; besides which, everyone has their own personal taste. I get why people like to take the moral high ground and denounce people who comment on appearance as "shallow" while insisting that they themselves never judge on appearance, but frankly... They're lying.

If I spend all my time now worrying about how I'll look when I get to 60, I'll get to 60 and not care because I'm too preoccupied with how I'll look when I'm 80. I'd rather look back on life and see that I enjoyed it as it came.

So, wow, my off-handed comment that i ended up deleting for fear of a creating a flamewar ended up NOT creating a flamewar. So...I guess I'll expand a bit. I would never date a chick with tattoos. I'm married, and I would leave my wife, if she got a tattoo. I have made that absolutely clear to her, and as such you could, more or less, say that I "forbade" her from getting one. It may seem rather tyrannical to outsiders, but it works perfectly fine for the both of us, we are both completely happy with each other and our relationship. Yes, she might be a tad bit happier if I let her get a tattoo, but it would make me VERY unhappy, so their is over-all a major loss of happiness in the relationship, so she doesn't bother.

I admit, I have certain prejudices against women with tattoos, likely due to my upbringing, and it's not something I can particularly shake off, it's pretty ingrained in there. Small-town living and all of that. Yes, it's likely shallow of me, but I can accept that about myself. On the plus side, while I'm "Ok" with it on guys, I do tend to pick on my best friend for the multitude of tats that he has, and I would never EVER EVER get one on myself, so while I guess I'm still a bit of a hypocrite, I'm not quite as bad as some people might think.

@Zardoz. I'll clarify my comments, I don't want it to seem that I hate girls with tattoos. Like Raccoon said, it's just a taste of mine. I like girls with tattoos, I just don't like the big ones. All the girls I know that have tattoos, have small ones. I can't see myself meeting a girl that I find attractive that has mega ink. I think you've got to be pretty out there as a girl to get a sleeve for instance.

Anyway back on topic. What's the most expensive tattoo any of you have? I'm saving up for a black and white half sleeve, hopefully going to set aside at least £500-1,000. It seems like a lot, but I want it to be as good as possible.

from what i see, no one really judges appearance, they just think they do. WELL unless they have stupid principles. i know a lot of popular people that are ugly as [censored], but it doesn't matter because their personality is great
anyway i think it's possible to manipulate your brain to believe anything. gotta start somewhere

There are different kinds of social relationships Zardoz; for example, I know people who would be considered unnatracitve but have great personalities and a ton of friends however, they may have more trouble getting a date because of their apperance. What I'm trying to say is that few people pick their friends on the basis of appearance, but it's perfectly normal to take looks into account when considering a...well, ermm...mate. It's human nature.

No it is human nature instinct (and the nature of all organisms that procreate, unless it's by division) to seek a mate that is "capable". This means fit and smart, and this predates to a time when one had to be fit and smart to survive. Attractiveness is part of this package, since one enjoys mating with those that are attractive (excuse the odd language, but I'm trying to keep a purely scientific mindset here).

yes, but i believe our brain can oversteer this if we try to. we're not purely driven by instincts like most animals, we can think

But we're still essentially instinctive beings. There's a reason that good looking people have it easier. It's just human nature. We may be civilised now, but our animal compulsions still largely remain.
