The Legendary Deathclaw

I one-shoted him with a sneak critical to the head with the AMR.

I have better things to do than pretend that I'm awesome cause I killed him with a spork.

The basic Fat Man isn't that good. It only does 165 damage over a radius of 2100 units. A plasma grenade is 150d/450u. Bottlecap Mine is 200d/256u and C4 is 250d/512u. Missiles are 100d/1300u or 100d/1700u in the base game. (Values from GECK.) Main advantages of a Fat Man is the 2100u radius gives it a big sweet spot.

Okayy... Are there really big enough enemy groups to make use of it? And how can a bottlecap mine or a plastic explosive be more powerful than a (miniature) nuclear explosion? Well, atleast it's consistent with Fallout 3, cherry bombs are one of the most powerful explosives known to mankind :lmao:

A lot of weapons really need to be rebalanced across the board by Obsidian now that everything is fleshed out. It just feels like a lot of the weapon values were left as-is from Fallout 3, or they threw darts to determine some of the values. Some of the harder to get weapons are weaker then they should be, some of the easy to get weapons are more powerful then they should be. With my http://www.newvegasnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=36208, Mini-Nukes (450d/2100u), High Explosive Missiles (300d/900u), Plasma Grenades (200d/450u) and Frag Grenades (180d/600u) are probably all viable against the Legendary Deathclaw.

Or there's the Holy Hand Grenade which is 500d/1500u (note that damage decreases with distance from impact, explosives skill, related perks and line-of-sight plays a role as well).

Warning: Not verified with empirical testing. The manufacturer cannot be hold responsible for mutilations, dismemberment or death. All warranties are null and void when weapons are used in a live fire environment. Your mileage may vary. Blowing yourself up is your own fault and not that of the munitions manufacturer.

Which is totally off-topic... but I like seeing things go boom in Fallout. And there's a distinct lack of "large enemy groups". Except maybe at some of the camps.

I do believe so, certainly seems to with my energy weapon user.

Ran across it at lvl 30. 100 sneak, 100 guns, using a suppressed sniper with Boone and 'Eddie'. Wasn't tough at all, saw it a mile away, snuck up to a good spot and opened fire. Didn't take much to take out.

that said, it's my first character so it's on normal and softcoe, at very hard could be damn...hard.

1 (head)shot with regular Sniper Rifle using JSP round(1.5x Damage).

Had quite a few damage modifiers though -

Abominable rank 2 or 3 I think
Lord Death rank 2
Slasher
Psycho
Better Criticals of course

are you guys saying that there is a harder death claw then the alpha one and the mother one at the quarry? i found the quarry at lvl 4 and cleared the quarry out including the alpha and mom was last . I try and shoot from the sides of cliffs because they dont know where you are shooting from . Your feet once they hit the ground is when they know where you are .Granted it took me well over an hour to clear the quarry. i finished mom off from that tall 4 sided coveyer belt thing from up the top of one of the sides. mom diddnt come up mine she walked up the one right next to me . two of the babies came up to be though lol. i just finished mom off with some dynomite. So there is a harder one then the ALPHA one and the mom?

See, I don't get it, maybe I'm like a beast or something, but I really do kill everything with anything. It's all a matter of weapon preference. Eg. Varmint rifle vs. Deathclaw mother. I just figured this game takes a little expertise, once you reach a certain level, it's not what, it's how. As for this guy, displacer glove ftw. Sneak 100, you pretty much guarantee death to all!

We finally found the Legendary Deathclaw. I left ED-E outside the caverns and took Boone in.

Boone was on his Sniper Rifle with .308 AP ammo and me using Thump Thump, the Missile Launcher and 2 C4s. It was a horrendous battle through the caverns and we were all worked up, you know? Totally immersed. So what happens?

Just before the final moments of battle with the LD, the game decides we need to level up.

Couldn't believe it. We're planning our next life-saving strategy while the LD is deciding when to jump out again and I have to think about
where to put skill points.

Just thought I'd share.

(It was nice to feel immersed again though after the experience last night.)

I am playing on hardcoe with the wacky wasteland perk...level 26 right now...100 on guns, 9 on strength, 7 luck.....and have found that getting a Gauss Rifle from the BoS bunker ( scooped it from the ground when they all lined up at the practice range and were killing each other - nice advatage of one of the many glitches) ....does 250 DPS on my settings....and kills any and all Deathclaws in 3 shots no matter what.

I didn't have too many problem killing him and found the best combo is to use Boon + Ed-e. Did this on hardcoe mode normal setting and even then he was still a bit tough.

Best thing to do is have guns at 80 and use the Anti-Material Rifle + Armor Piercing. Try to lure out the other deathclaws then when they are dead sneak in and use the AMR to launch an attack on the TLDC. Got him down to like 75% and then hammered away at him till he was dead. Best thing to do is if you have trouble using the Armor Piercing bullets use the Incendiary bullets to help wick away his health. Eventually it will kill him and you will claim your trophy. ;)

Brush Gun + HP Ammo + Slasher + Sneak Attack to the head <- That'll kill it dead, but it's a risky all-or-nothing tacit by itself so have a "Plan B" ready.

Plan B: Have a Riot Shotgun with a Beanbag rounds already loaded. If the Sneak attack with the Brush Gun fails switch over to the Riot Shotgun and knock it out cold. Then fill it full of slugs fast as you can switch over to them and pull the trigger. Might need to knock it out a second time.

Give boon a fully repaired gauss rifle with incindiary ammo, arm yourself with the same, and go to town while hidden with a stelth boy. The gauss rifle hits harder per bullet than the anti material rifle. Bring ED-E for ranged backup. He wont do much damage, but he can sometimes dustract him off you or boone long enough for the kill shot.

Since when does Boone use the gauss rifle? I thought his energy weapon skill was crappy.
Either way the easiest way to kill the Legendary Deathclaw was using the YCS/186 unique gauss rifle with max-charge rounds.
Perks that will help... a LOT
Meltdown and Better Criticals
Oh and actually being able to sneak up on the guy because he has 10 perception and if you don't have high enough sneak will prob start charging for you from the get-go.

His energy weapon skill is less than his guns skill, which is why i suggested the Gauss Rifle.

Gauss Rifle = .50 cal bullets (Guns)
Anti-Material Rifle = Micro Fusion Cells (Energy)

What in the world are you talking about?
The Anti-Material Rifle is the one using .50 cal bullets
The Gauss rifle uses Micro Fusion Cells.

I think you got the two guns mixed up.

That is correct....

Never gave a gauss to an NPC...but used it myself numerous times to dispatch deathclaws.

I'm playing Normal, non-hardcoe mode, so it's a bit different for me.

Anyway, I cleared the rest of the cave using a lot of sneak criticals. Then I donned a stealth boy, and planted a couple C4s in the passage leading to the cavern where he's hanging out with two other deathclaws.

When I was sure I was in a good spot to hide, I took out one with a .308 AP round to the head, from close range, with my silenced sniper rifle. Took out the other, leaving the Legendary, who apparently didn't do much to look for me. Then, when I was sure I had everything set, I caught him with a couple shots to the head with my Gobi Sniper.

Then, as I backed away, I switched to the C4 detonator, and hit him right as he ran over the C4 charges. That left very little health for him, and I finished him off with a couple .308 AP rounds. I want to say I got in a head shot, but it could have been two torso shots.

EDIT:
Oh, and is there an achievement or award for killing the four (known) Legendary creatures? The Cazador, Deathclaw, Fire Gecko and Nightstalker?
