The Legendary Deathclaw

Post » Wed Mar 30, 2011 12:00 pm

My God, the hardest creature to kill yet. I still can't kill him as I'm around level 22, and he still manages to one-hit KO me even with my armor on. I managed a sneak critical headshot and a couple headshots with my Gobi silenced before he ran up and swiped me into a wall.

Anyone else having trouble with this specific creature, without the use of the Anti-Material Rifle?

I'm still trying to find him. Where is he again? I know he is in a cave but I forgot which one.

I think it's the Dead Wind Cavern? Try killing him in your 10's, guaranteed impossible w/o cheats or the Anti-Material.

Right now, the only possible way of even scratching the thing is with a plethora of C4, and a handy detonator. Otherwise, in levels 1-23, give up.

I think I'll be fine. I'm about 200 XP away from level 30. Thanks for the info.

P.S. Do you know if the Tesla Beaton works on him very well?

So far, the only sure-fire way to kill the beast is with the Anti. All other guns with a sneak critical only damage him. However, I have not tried it with the Tesla, but I suppose it would be highly effective.

My Anti did nothing to him..

The only time I faced him was on Normal where Boone was feeling frisky and decided to take the beast on with his machete, successfully distracting it after being knocked out a few times. I got off a nice sneak crit. headshot :) (and then some) with my silenced sniper.

Yes it is Dead Wind Cavern

The beast is Lvl 30
850 health
250 damage
and 10 Perception

On Very Hard he does 500 damage per swoosh of his claws. Good luck you Very Hard-corers.

Lmao, I'm playing with no companions (no help run), so essentially, I distract myself for the Deathclaw. Needless to say, I die a 100% of the time.

I tried multiple times with different guns (at this point in time I didn't mess with the different ammo types).

Level 30
88 guns
Commando/finese/sniper/better criticals/2X action boy
100% Gobi
Stealth boy
8 Luck

Took 3 shots in vats and noscoped in the head for the last 2 bars of health.

I layed mines in front of him for safety, and loaded him full of riot shotgun-bean bag rounds. they slow him down lots then you just beat on him with whatever you want. I had a anti-material rifle handy. once the guy is slowed or stopped he's pretty much dead meat.

Who in here has the Wild Wastland Perk? If so then your missing out on the most increadable grenade youll ever pick up in the mojave. What is this weapon of mass destuction im talking about you ask, The Holy Frag Nade. Found in camp searchlites north church this powerhouse will take out the Legendary Deathclaw before it knew what was comeing.

Otherwise lay a line of C4 then sneak attack him with some sort of sniper ( 50 cal is prefered ) and then make him go boom!

As for me, I dropped him with 2 shots of my 50 cal., the first a sneak attack then a no scope that sent him flying like a eagle ( ca-caw!, ca-caw! )

Spoiler
He's in Dead Wind Cavern next to Harper's Shack just through the Primm Pass, you have to kill him to get the automatic(?) grenade launcher - Mercy.

I actually just "discovered" him earlier today, had to reload once since he caught Veronica and I by surprise... Veronica has 215+ HP and she's wearing T51b Power Armor fully repaired with a T51d helmet full repaired... she got one shotted by the Legendary Deathclaw, lol. :dead:

I killed him in 4 headshots at level 19.

Here's how I did it... you'll need a Stealth Boy, a fully modified sniper rifle, and a change of underwear. First shot was a sneak critical which dropped him 25%, then he started looking around for me, next shot brough him down maybe 10%, then he charged me, I opened V.A.T.S. and pumped two rounds into his head, the second being a critical... mission accomplished. :goodjob:

Playing on Normal difficulty, hardcoe mode.

I have had luck killing deathclaws in VATS using the Avenger minigun and AP ammo ... though it sure takes a lot of ammo, and a lot of action points, so it's tough to do too many at a time. Not sure how useful it would be on the Legendary Deathclaw after spending all your ammo and action points just getting through the door...

I can't believe this thread. I was about level sixteen. I shot the Legendary twice with a Sniper Rifle, one Sneak Critical, and the other up the ass. It died.

Weeeeeaaaaaak. lol

Edit - I've probably got a save from around that point, if I get time I'll Fraps it later and post a video. I'm guessing everyone in this thread is using VATS or something?

Edit 2 - All right there's a gap in my main saves betwen level 16 and level 19. The level 16 save I don't yet have a Sniper Rifle, and the level 19 save already has Mercy in my unique weapons trunk in Novac. So it was deffo between those two levels. 16 - 19 I suppose I could play the level 16 one and get a Sniper Rifle, and go to the cave. Hmm.

SPECIAL on the 19 save is:
S - 5
P - 8
E - 6
C - 7
I - 8
A - 9
L - 6 (this probably helped)

Pertinent Skills are:
Guns - 90 (would have been lower)
Sneak - 75 (would have been lower)

Perks:
Abominable (this probably helped)
Animal Control (2)
Better Criticals (this deffo helped)
Bug Stomper (2)
Camel of the Mojave
Good Natured
Intense Training (8)
Lord Death (this probably helped)
Trigger Discipline (this probably helped)

The Sniper Rifle is not modded and I used AP rounds (this deffo helped), and don't use VATS. Playing on Hard / hardcoe. Are yall remembering there are different ammo types? lol I only learned yesterday that the Legendary creatures were a big deal. I thought that cave was rubbish, a bunch of Deathclaws guarding a piece of kit I wouldn't use, and with no personality at all. I didn't realise it was a big deal because the Legendary was in there. lol

Yeah, it's not good to let them hit you. lol Stealth and not getting hit FTW.

Edit: @Johnny3Tears The Gobi comes with all mods like all uniques me thinks. I ain't got it yet myself, Lockpick is around 80-ish, get it up to 90 and I'll be able to use a book to get into the footlocker.

Ah no, just checked the Wiki." It cannot be modified with a sniper rifle suppressor or carbon fiber parts." So Mad Shadow is right, he used a mod. Bleh.

Until i play with my tank and get my hands on a Fat Man :nuke:

The basic Fat Man isn't that good. It only does 165 damage over a radius of 2100 units. A plasma grenade is 150d/450u. Bottlecap Mine is 200d/256u and C4 is 250d/512u. Missiles are 100d/1300u or 100d/1700u in the base game. (Values from GECK.) Main advantages of a Fat Man is the 2100u radius gives it a big sweet spot.

Which is why I end up modding the explosion values to give a bigger punch and to be more consistent...

I think I'm going to do a Legendary monster run tonight. I'm torn if I should bring Cass along though or if she'll just be a burden in hardcoe mode. As it is now she one-two shots everything up to normal Deathclaws as do I so I think it's doable. I guess I'll find out.
