The Legendary Deathclaw

Post » Wed Mar 30, 2011 3:08 am

I don't want to brag but I killed him with a bb gun with 10 shots and my bare fists on a lockpick build. This was VH/HC by the way and I had no companions. My SPECIAL: 1 7 1 10 10 5 5

This guy has got to be making this up, 10 bbs and his fists with 1 endurance? No way

I found it by accident which did require a reload but after that it wasn't that hard at all for me at level 30. I had more trouble with the alpha and mother one but then again I was only level 6 or so when I first attempted to clear the quarry.

Aren't you trolling right now by calling me a troll? It was a joke, and since you obviously have no sense of humor I suggest you take you lousy comments elseware.

The first time I did not know what to expect, so I used my normal tactics against deathclaws- Riot Shotgun at point blank until the mutha is dead. This failed epicly. I lasted 20 seconds I think. It even killed me and Boone within the same hit.

Second time I tried it, I threw my big guns out- Holy Frag Grenades. Needless to say, it killed me and it.

Third time, I ran in there is my favorite weapon- The Mysterious Magnum. Wearing my duster, 1st Recon Beret, and Authority Glasses, I gunned it down in six shots, all six being criticals. Boone still got knocked out though :D

I went into that cavern with Boone and ED-E, I used This Machine with armor piercing rounds. Interestingly enough, ED-E didn't get knocked out even once, but Boone went down many times. ED-E even somehow owned every deathclaw that got to it. WTF Boone? >_>

At higher lvls I think ED-E is one of the companions with the highest amount of stand-alone HP. And because Deathclaw attacks ignore DT, actual Hit-Points matters a lot more towards survivability than having good armor. Though its strange to hear that ED-E actually kills anything for you because I upgraded my ED-E with the followers and I rarely see it kill anything at all.

Well I finally did it on hardcoe/Very hard. I'm not sure if others would consider this "cheating" but hell It's the only thing that I could pull off.

Well after about an hour killing all the lesser ones I approached the big guy. I used my riot shotgun to fire bean bags as fast as freaking possible. When it finally collapsed I elegantly fired nearly 30 or so slugs into it's head. Not the most epic way but hey.

Anyone else have another way?

Multiplas + maxed cells + sneak attack, I killed all three death claws in that area in a short time on normal difficulty level 18 with 50 sneak.
Otherwise a silenced sniper and some patience / luck.

Spoiler
He's in Dead Wind Cavern next to Harper's Shack just through the Primm Pass, you have to kill him to get the automatic(?) grenade launcher - Mercy.

I actually just "discovered" him earlier today, had to reload once since he caught Veronica and I by surprise... Veronica has 215+ HP and she's wearing T51b Power Armor fully repaired with a T51d helmet full repaired... she got one shotted by the Legendary Deathclaw, lol. :dead:

I killed him in 4 headshots at level 19.

Here's how I did it... you'll need a Stealth Boy, a fully modified sniper rifle, and a change of underwear. First shot was a sneak critical which dropped him 25%, then he started looking around for me, next shot brough him down maybe 10%, then he charged me, I opened V.A.T.S. and pumped two rounds into his head, the second being a critical... mission accomplished. :goodjob:

Playing on Normal difficulty, hardcoe mode.

I dealt with him the same exact way.

Using a 20% critt character w. modded Sniper i haven't found him that hard.
The trick is to catch him by surprise, and not get caught yourself.

Admittedly the first few times i killed him, it was with headshots, but trying out leg-shooting to lower his movement speed seems to work wonders.

To the ones saying their AmR did nothing to him; were you at 100 gun skill? You need that to get maximum dmg pr. bullet whereas the Sniper/Gobi only requires 80.

Holy crap Raul ALMOST just cleared out dead wind cavern by himself. Loaded with T-51 power armor, the CZ57 Avenger, and 7000 rounds of AP ammo!

I did back him up with some grenade machine gun fire, and I guess ED-E served as a pointless distraction. but he probably did 80% of the damage himself. Including the entire deathclaw mother, since I didn't even know there was one in there she came bounding out of a corner and while I was panicking and trying to switch to ballistic fist (BF) on my hot keys he calmly pointed his gun at her and filled her with a few hundred rounds of 5mm.

Only thing he needed help on was the legendary DC, but it was still much easier with him there. I had this whole sequence planned out where I would pop a turbo and slasher, hit him a couple of times with my BF, then dance around him punching while Raul wailed on him with the minigun. Turns out that wasn't needed, just brought up vats, delivered 3 right crosses with the BF, then backed off while Raul did the rest.

Playing on hard BTW.

Took me twice. First time I went at him I forgot to reload my AMR so I got the sneak hit outside of vats then went in vats, and my dude needed to reload after the first shot, and for someone unknown reason the rifle jammed after the reload despite it being 100% :brokencomputer: by the time I was able to get off the next shot it was ripping my head off lol. Second time went off without a hitch. Got the sneak shot out of vats then gave him 2 more in vats. It still managed to get in one hit though which left me with 4 bars of health left.

-Ranger Sequoia
-HP ammo
-"The Professional", "Cowboy", "Better Criticals" and rank two of "Abominable" perks behind it.
-95% Sneak attack in VATS to the head.

Ripped it's head right off with one round on Normal Difficulty. Pretty sure the same can be done on Very Hard with Slasher/Psycho tossed into the mix. I sat Looking at my screen for the longest time with the VATS shot qued thinking, "If the doesn't work I'm sooo screwed.", but still felt confident since the exact same shot against the mother worked a few minutes before.

For the rest of the deathclaws, both inside and outside, it was a mix of "This Machine", the fully moded sniper rifle and a few rounds from the AMR. 18x .308 JHP, 4x .50MG Match, 2x .45-70 Gov't HP and some of my finger nails expended in the effort. Also, I let ED-E and Boone chill at Harper's Shack since I wanted their perks but not their stupidity.

You can't melee it because of its reach.... but meleeing it -really- ticks it off. So I had Boone with the uber plasma rifle from Repconn and ED-E amd I whacked it once. It hit me for 2/3ds of my HP. I stimmed back up and ran through that narrow tunner. Boone and ED-E were in the tunnel and it was so fixated on me that Boone got a few more shots of and gellled the thing.
This is a total bait and boom battle. Save up mines etc and have your companions superfitted. Just dont put the mines near your companions. While its charging toward you and not being successful because your companions have chocked the choke point? That's when you pull out a gun and start firing like mad. But I didn't have any guns or ammo 'cause I gave it all to Boone. Again the thing was so ticked at me for whacking it, it let my companions kill it.

The encounter is 'oooo' 'ahhh' but I didn't see a darn thing there worth fighting that hard for. Oooo prestige. BFD. I wanted some chocolate.

I ventured into dead wind cavern with Boone, Rex, and an NCR Ranger. I sneaked around very carefully taking out all of the lesser deathclaws with sneak crits until only the legendary remained. At this point I engaged him with a critical and merely pissed him off XD. I got behind my support and popped off shots with my marksman carbine using AP rounds while my support team dropped one by one. I made sure to have stimpacks on hotkey. Then for some reason when he was almost dead he ran past me about 20 yards up ad stood still. Pulled out my fully upgraded hunting shotgun and gave him a couple of shots in the back. Check and mate. I limped up to him, claimed his hand as a prize and keep it on a desk in my lucky 38 suite.

When I found this thing, I was level 30 with Guns 100. I brought a Stealth Boy and my silenced Sniper Rifle with a lot of AP ammo (I've got JSP, but the AP is better against the DCs). I went in alone, no companion Perks.

In the two minutes I had, I cleared out every DC and found the Legendary.

You can't sneak up close to the Legendary DC, but you CAN sneak into range of him. That's what I did. Got into range, Sneak Attack Critical in the head, crept back, waited for [HIDDEN] status, got another SA Crit, plugged him with a third round while he looked for me and down that sumbyatch went. Nice and easy, just the way I like it.

I never take on a Deathclaw toe to toe. Never ever ever.

This has to be my favorite thread. Legendary battles with the Legendary Deathclaw. This is why I play Fallout and love it and post here...for the stories. Sorry to interrupt...don't want to add to the post count and have it reach 200 too fast. Best.thread.ever.

why talk about killing a legendary monster on any difficulty setting besides very hard? you're cheapening your own victory by not facing the hardest monsters in the game in the hardest way possible.

trust me, legendary deathclaw on normal mode is like a regular deathclaw on very hard. simple guns and ammo won't do the trick, he has far, far too much health.

(okay, anti-material rifle with crime magzine is how i did it, but then again i also laid about 5 mines for him to step on)

Most recently- My "Dumb" big guns chick w/ plasma caster, her sneak is like 18 so after the first shot it was a bloodbath.

sneak critical headshot with the sniper+, loaded with JSP. went down with an exploding head after exactly 1 shot, as all the others, too.
