The unrealisticness of dialogue...

Is it normal for the housecarl in Solitude (whatever her name is) to suggest I'm lost for entering my own home?

All housecarls do that.

The jump from DF to MW was amazing, so I don't have much to complain about, but one of the greatest dissappointments of MW was that NPC's did not react to what you were wearing (beyond THAT you were wearing anything at all. and even then a paltry 5pts hit to disposition IIRC) I was really expecting a clothing dynamic, but I guess they just ran out of time. DF had so much potential because of the huge variety of clothing available so I really expected them to expand on that. Then OB, still nothing, but even moreso -- now they didnt really even react if you were naked.
Now my dissappointment has only feastered exponentially, it's been over a decade and I see no progress. It's more like we're moving backwards. Guess I should just give up on the idea all together, but everytime I see any variety of clothing, I can't help but be reminded of it.

Fantastic. I guess I'll kill them if they aren't essential.

YES! I totally agree! All the AI comments you mentioned drive me nuts, too!

I SO wish I could give that smart-mouth little girl in Whiterun a very long time out (since blasting her with a lightning bolt would be frowned upon). I've been playing computer games forever... actually since before there were computers as we know them now (Atari Pong machine, etc.), and I have NEVER played a game with such irritating AI. I actually alter my gameplay to avoid as many of the townspeople as I can; standing and waiting for them to s-l-o-w-l-y walk past the area I need to pass through, turning down a side street when I see a particularly irritating AI coming, things like that. I like the female blacksmith in Whiterun, but I am eternally sick of her repetative babble.

If real life were filled with that many irritating strangers, real life would be a lot less full of people, because murder would be the norm. I HATE all the brainless, non-productive, pointless AI pvssyr.

In addition, considering the time setting for Skyrim, kids with smart mouths like all those in Skyrim would be beaten half to death or out-right killed. I'm not kidding, children who talked to advlts like that weren't tolerated by anyone. The old saying was, "Children should be seen and not heard," and it was strictly enforced. Even pleasant and respectful children were called down for doing no more than speaking to an advlt who hadn't spoken to them first.

I think it's lazy scripting that lead to the dialogues being so short. That or pandering to the console kiddies.

As for comments from the guards I was under the impression it was tied to your skills. Silly, but it's a cute touch, when a guard comments on my use of a sword, being smart to use light armor or chiding me for sneaking: those are the skills I've developed. It's a reminder that the game recognizes your character development.

When you go to Whiterun does Farengar Secret-Fire still suggest that "You know, if you have the aptitude, you should join the Mage's College in Winterhold." even while you are wearing the Archmage Robes?

Yeah, the almost total lack of recognition for ANY of my achievements... including saving the entire world... drives me NUTS!

Hmm guards seem to think I prefer Light Armour, despite as of now Light is 80 and Heavy is 100. As well as this, Heavy has always been higher, and I only wore Heavy for most of my playthrough.
They chat about sneak too much too. It's 65; why not talk about my decent skills?

Funny when you walk a past a guard

"Your like me, don't fancy those clunky two handed weapons."

Then you look and see he has a two handed weapon on his back.

Why do the guards have almost as intimate knowledge of my stats as me? It's one thing for them to say ""The Gods gave you two hands, and you use them both for your weapon... I can respect that." because they see me wearing a two handed sword. But walking around in full view, in broad daylight, how do they know what my sneak is? I never asked them the time of day, how do they know about my "honeyed words".?

Yeah that was a hoot the first couple of times. Maybe he was issued a two-hander.

All housecarls do that.

That happens with all house carls you haven't chosen as a follower, even Lydia from Whiterun will do that, if you haven't asked her to follow you... and you can only have one such follower at a time. As long as they're just house-sitters they react that way.

If you've chosen them as your follower, then asked them to wait somewhere, they don't react that way, though. But, if you keep them waiting too long, they get tired of waiting and stop being your follower, reverting to being a house-sitter. They then go back to wearing their original armor.

Not reason for panic, though, since they're still carrying all the stuff you gave them, and all you have to do to access it, and have them wear that cool armor you gave them again, is ask them to follow you. If they don't put on the cool armor when you ask them to follow you, take something from them, or give them something new to carry, and they'll immediately put on the better armor.

I also despise all of the repetitive one-liners. I also hate getting stopped by some asinine NPC as I am walking by, focused on my current quest or whatever --as in Markarth and Ripten.

"I am not from Markarth and no [censored] it, I don't know who lives in that friggin house! Bother me again and I will friggin kill you!"

I tried killing that Priest once, but the S.O.B. won't die: even with the cheat code. Every time on of those stupid guards say something to me, my respose is this, "FU!"

The bottom line, I think, is that Bethesda's writers don't write well. Or, at the very least they don't know how to process a story through dialogue? Of course, I could be wrong?!?

No, not really.
In Morrowind we didnt have this problem, nor did we in Oblivion.
The problem is that the NPC's only have one line that they spew ad nauseum.
I actually miss NPC's pvssyring about mudcrabs after Skyrim's mind-numbingly aggrevatingly annoying one-liners.

This is what I find most annoying. The npcs don't talk to each other. In Oblivion and Morrowind it could be close to amusing to go to a tavern and sit around listening. In Skyrim you hear the same npc saying the same thing over and over.

If anything it doesn't comment enough on how you progress in the game

"What do you do, fetch the mead?
"No, I've been Harbinger for some time now"

The dialogue has a lot of problems but, honestly, Oblivion and Morrowind weren't any better. Less annoying, yes, but they weren't any less repetitive. Voice acting is probably 100x more expensive than writing text alone, so by the arguments that some people are using Morrowind's dialogue is completely inexcusable. Having 20 NPCs repeat the same 15 lines of dialogue is no better than Skyrim, it's just less in your face. Skyrim is a huge game and its largely non-linear. Writing good dialogue for a game like Skyrim is significantly harder than writing good dialogue for a game where every action the player takes is more or less predetermined. Could it have been a lot better? Absolutely. Just like every other area of the game could be a lot better. What you're seeing is the consequence of time + money. People blaming it on developer laziness, indifference, or stupidity are just utterly lacking in objectivity and ignorant of the challenges of game design.

At some point product performance should be considered, no matter how innovative certain parts of the product might be. The Titanic had that problem. However, if the Titanic had been rushed out in the shape Skyrim was brought to market, it would've sunk at the dock where it was launched. With the Titanic, a good thing, with Skyrim, not so much.

One thing that bothers me about Skyrim compared to other RPGs is its lack of humor. The characters are so [censored] boring and serious! They don't ever say anything interesting or even remotely funny. And I agree with the OP, it's ridiculous AND annoying how everyone you approach has to talk to you.

I think there may be some glitch involved.
My light armour skill gets commented upon even though Ive never worn it at all.
Maybe it has to do with recent skill advances?
I do read every book I find and some level a skill.

I wouldn't mind if they did't know, but you'd think that one guy joining the Companions wouldn't be as bigger news as the Leader being replaced

Well, given the notoriety of the Companions in Skyrim, coupled with the fact that there are only nine companions I would think a new member would be pretty big news. Although, I agree that the leader being replaced might be bigger news.

Some of the Companion members seem useless except for filler. I haven't heard of what they've done.
Plus they don't have a leader. ;)

its a game, voice overs cost money

money ends, so u can't have millions of lines

its svcks but its reality

thats why MW had so many IN depth quests....

IT WAS ALL TEXT BASED WITH NO ANIMATIONS OR VOICE OVERS AT ALL

a fact a lot of the lunatic MW fans seem to forget all the time.

Alternate choice to expensive voice-overs: SILENCE
