As my signature suggest, I'm going to miss all the anti-communist rhetoric of Fallout 3. I don't expect there to be as much of it in the New Vegas area (despite Nevada being significantly more libertarian than Maryland). I'll miss the Jeffeson Memorial and all the other great national monuments of the Mall. I'll also miss having a large and active Brotherhood of Steel -- I loved their citadel, which had a very "military industrial complex" type of feeling. Most of all I'll miss the voice of Malcolm McDowell on the radio.

I'll miss stepping out of the vault and exploring the school right by vault 101 (forgot the name of the school), and running away in fear after I ran out of ammo and was nearly dead.

I'll miss the time I was out wandering the wasteland at midnight one night, only to scream when I had a random death claw attack me, waking up the whole house..good times, good times.

If whole world is pretty much wiped out with nuclear bombs - it will take millenniums before civilizations can recover.
And first few centuries things indeed gets worse. Most resources are imported nowadays - so after nuclear apocalyptic "ordinary" life can't flourish because of lacking resources.

I really hope that developers has understood that post apocalyptic feeling was the key of success FO3 got. But as I already mentioned I'm afraid NV might be an disappointment for me. I was kind of abashed when I first understood that they are focusing e.g Casino gaming ...
I just can't understand why anyone would like to play "playing" in a casino - If I like to gamble I just visit some real casino....

As Albert Einstein said:
"I know not with what weapons World War III will be fought, but World War IV will be fought with sticks and stones."

So, if this game is some kind of "red dead redemption" with possibility of virtual gambling - I will just hate it.

I know this is from awhile back, but that's actually not true. In the US, we're mainly an exporter of resources. We import stupid crap like plastic toys and junk. Besides, it's not like those resources are gone. They're in the buildings, machines, and landfills all around. It would be pretty easy to scavenge building materials without having to go into one of the thousands upon thousands of mines we have.

I get what you mean, I love the post-apocalypse too, but it makes sense that we would be rebuilding. Radiation takes a very long time to dissipate, but not for it to fall within safe levels. I imagine a world near-saturated would take longer, but Hiroshima and Nagasaki are perfectly safe these days. And don't worry - even though there's civilization, we're going to spend lots of time in wilderness, and probably nearly as much exploring ruins and abondoned areas.

EDIT: to stay on topic, I will miss Moira Brown and the lovely monuments of DC. As much as I'm done with Fallout 3, I REALLY hope we can revisit these sites eventually.

Me too. But its not so bad, we have http://fallout.wikia.com/wiki/Raul_Tejada instead. Charon's long-lost Mexican cousin (probably). :)

I know this is only a game - so the following (out of topic) is written mostly because I found this discussion interesting.

My point was that with full scale nuclear war all transport networks, mines, factories etc. will be destroyed. So even there is gold and oil in Alaska it doesn't help much in New Vegas .... There will not be much flora or fauna left - thanks to nuclear winter and after that UV (ozone layer will be wiped away). What will be left is cockroaches, viruses, bacteria and might be rats ...

So before fauna and flora can recover (to level we are used to) - it needs a lot of evolution and birth of species.

When people can hardly get their food - they don't focus to anything else than getting it - it means knowledge and civilization will just disappear during first decades. So will disappear most of machines and electronics. If a car stays out for 50 years - there is not much left of it ... especially after acid rains ... and the same formula goes pretty much for everything - even for buildings.

Even e.g New Vegas didn't get direct hit - its inhabitants needs to be sheltered over nuclear winter (-22F and totally dark period for one Year) - and if they survive it, they can't be in direct sun light for years. Afterwards there will not be left anything to farm. So first decades they are searching rats and cockroaches for food. They are also very sick - a lot of cancer - their children will be mostly mutated etc. etc..

From that kind of situation it is hard to believe in 200 years they reach an technology level close to present.

random encounters and the deathclaw hand

Well you gonna love Wild Wasteland then. That trait gives you the weirdest things that happen. Some good, some bad. Hopefully better then, "Thanks for the help, me and this group gathered a present for you, take this cereal, its our graditude".

I'm going to miss the familiarity. I loved Fallout 3, and Having been to DC many times, it was interesting walking from where I stayed to the Washinton Monument, taking a new tour of the Capital Building, and walking by the Reflection Pool. It just drew me in, because it was my Nation's capital, and I had been there.

Vegas won't have that for me. I've been there too, so the glitz and glam factor and the casinos will click, as well as some of the surrounding cities, but without those monuments and landmarks, I won't have the same feeling. That's fine and all, but it was quite a nice feel. :tops:
