Two Dawnguard Reviews (Kotaku, IGN)

Post » Fri Nov 16, 2012 8:15 am

That's a silly reason for not liking IGN. Beyond all the bribery and openly getting buddy-buddy with big gaming companies like EA (Chobot in ME 3) and the console makers I mean. It seems like that stuff is far more important. 9.7 is a terrific score.

I know it;s a good score but the reason they took that 5% off seems arbitrary, like they had no other idea how to justify the rating so they just made something up

Lets take a look at Oblivion DLC for reference. There were several $10 DLCs and many of them were houses. You furbish them and that was it. Sure, they had special features for certain classes which made them worth it. So, with that in mind take a look at Fort Dawnguard. Your own room with safe storage containers, full smithing facilities including an enchanting altar, three salesmen, and all your vampire-slaying quests launch from that area. All without a loading screen. There's your $10 DLC right there.

So what about the other $10? Remember Knights of the Nine? I enjoyed that quest and found this one to be just as good. Whether it was traversing the Soul Cairn, hunting Elder Scrolls, or recruiting members for the Dawnguard.

Then we get extras: new weapons, spells, clothes, and much needed support for Vampires and Werewolves. Not to mention some interesting and rewarding side quests.

I have a feeling some people were expecting the self-sustainable exosphere of Shivering Isles. That was double the price of Dawnguard. I think this DLC is worth $20 easy. No more, no less.

some gaming magazine discovered EA was paying reviewers to give them good reviews and other games bad ones. People probably told them to stop, but I wouldn't be surprised if they still were.

Actually, now they pay gaming sites to do damage control for them in addition to paying for reviews.

Remember all the backlash over ME 3's ending? Remember how several major sites all published very similar articles about "gamer entitlement" (note the exact quotation) almost simultaneously? Remember all the gaming press people going "I prefer Dragon Age 2 to Origins" after that disaster of a game launched? Fun fact: PC Origins outsold all 3 versions of DA II combined. The mass opinions of consumers and the opinions of gaming press are not often that far out of line. But whenever EA is involved things get suspiciously different ...
