[WIP] Unique Taverns

Post » Sun May 27, 2012 9:11 pm

As I said before this mod will not have anything modern in it. My Oblivion mod was a completely different story where I chose to add in more modern facilities because the Pell's Gate Gallery was more modern.

Have you noticed that we already have wash stands in Skyrim....

http://i110.photobucket.com/albums/n99/Shezrie/ScreenShot55.jpg

If we wanted indoor toilets, the public ones would be like this....

http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_qpLELsHf9H8/TPd40H1a2LI/AAAAAAAAAIE/AHLt31rpXpE/s1600/IMG_1088.jpg

Or like the one Meo made for Oblivion, a basic lower class chair with a hole in the middle. Then a bucket goes underneath.

Here is a seriously upperclass medieval toilet, obviously not suitable for anything other then the very richest of residents. We are not going to have anything like this, just posting this for comparisons.

http://www.flickr.com/photos/shirleytwofeathers/2643210543/#/photos/shirleytwofeathers/2643210543/lightbox/

But toilets will come later, if they are even added at all.

Re: being served by a barmaid, I finally experienced this at the Dead Man's Drink Inn in Falkreath. Maybe it has something to do with what chair you sit in? Or the time of day? The Falkreath barmaid actually spends a lot of the day outside the inn, so it's easy to sit down at a time when she isn't around.

Anyway, one more item for the wishlist: after finishing the Civil War quests (I gave the Imperials the victory), I've noticed that the "Age of Aggression" song hasn't changed--the bards in the taverns still sing of defeating Ulfric and the Stormcloaks as a hoped-for future event. It'd be nice to record male- and female-sung updated versions of this song, and its Stormcloak counterpart, that would replace http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Skyrim:Songs_of_Skyrim once one side or the other has won the Civil War.

Thanks for the info, I will go and experiment with Falkreath's tavern.

Excellent idea about the songs and those are really good variations you made. I think they would do perfectly.

There's also a working serving wench in the Silver-Blood Inn in Markarth. I was approached by her several times when I sat down in there to eat.

Thanks, I will check that out.

On a completely different note......we finally have a writing animation. In Oblivion I had office workers only able to sit at desks all day and do nothing. The town modder in me is completely happy.

are these going to replace taverns or add new ones? I personally would prefer some tweaks to the taverns already there, and then you add your unique ones to different spots wherever it may be. Why take away what is already there?

The main purpose is to improve the taverns already there, in particular the copy/pasted taverns that are all identical. After we have finished improving and making those taverns unique, then we will look at making brand new taverns.

Personally I love Karthwasten and would love to see a tavern there.

but, as you say, better to diversify existing taverns. which one you think will be the "seedy" one, where smugglers and cutthroats go?

That would be decided by the location and the surrounding area. There may also be taverns that look normal enough, however may contain hidden areas where you will get the cutthroats and smugglers. Maybe you can only access these areas if you have a bounty or are a dark brotherhood member, or thieves guild...who knows...

Maybe you will learn a password from your faction that will allow you access to a certain area in certain taverns.....or maybe some taverns will just be downright dangerous.

http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Nightgate_Inn looks like it should have something sinister going on. Out the back is a little dock over a small lake. What if one were to innocently be out there admiring the lake and discover bodies pushed underwater under the ice.

What if one were to uncover sinister goings on where guests suddenly disappear in the night and someone at the inn is behind it all.

Then one would definitely love to see that happen, so long as....
Spoiler
no harm comes to the DB quest that uses the inn. :)

It's mainly the taverns in non-walled-in cities and villages that need help. All the walled cities (seats of the "Greater Holds" as I call them) already have rather uniquely laid out taverns.

What I don't like about Skyrim's taverns is I rent a room, go to bed wake up and it seems identical to when it was 12 am. The same people sitting there doing the same things. Don't these people have a life beyond the tavern? That said here's what I'd like to see:

1.) 2am, the barkeep starts throwing people out for the night who haven't rented a room, or they go home on their own at various times. Even drunks need sleep and should pass out or go home.
2.) Have a few random bandit types passing through who cause trouble in the smaller bars that don't have city gates. Maybe they didn't pay their tab and won't leave but the barkeep is intimidated by them and won't throw them out and asks you to help. You can ask them to leave nicely, intimidate, or brawl them, etc.
3.) Put a few mysterious types in the bar who sit in a dark corner with a hood on and give the player a side quest.
4.) Implement drinking animation for the player so when you select a mead when you are "sitting" it plays a drinking animation inifinitely like the NPC's have. Selecting it while standing operates as normal and consumes it instantly. This would add immersion and role playing. Also implement drunk effects such as reduced overall stamina, blurred vision and stagger animation. Maybe even pass out with a fade to black screen and wake up 4-5 hours later.
5.) In the cases where a bard sings with no lute, see if there is music to be added so they play the lute and sing instead. Singing without background music is horrible no matter how good the singer is. Be nice to hear the dragonborn comes that is on youtube that pretty brunette sings performed. I'm sure you could get permission to implement it.
6.) Fires should burn you if you enter them.
7.) Cooking pots in all taverns.
8.) Varied prices and quality of taverns, including the rooms you rent. I want a 5 star tavern once in a while. Chance for disease in some crappy beds at crappy taverns.
9.) prosttutes in Riften and a few other seedy places. Simple fallout 3 style with a fade to black sleep would be fine.
10.) I like how the redgaurd in Whiterun comes by to take your order. There should be more of that. But not if you have a drink in hand (see #4)

I think all taverns do this... happened for me in Falkreath too, if you sit down

That's a vanilla bug. None of the fires anywhere in the game do damage. That's beyond the scope of a mod like this.

This is already universal as far as I've seen. Someone at Bethesda was thinking ahead :)

I think this a great idea but I think everything about your taverns appearence from the outside to the inside. I think they should have unique logos and architechture. Also you can create unique items such as chairs, tables, lamps. Etc. this is important because when we go in your tavern we want to have a visual appeal also.

Re: being served by a barmaid, I finally experienced this at the Dead Man's Drink Inn in Falkreath. Maybe it has something to do with what chair you sit in? Or the time of day?

I think it's more random than that. I've been accousted by the bar maid in Whiterun while I was in the middle of a sneaky quest and didn't get any where near a chair. Which brings me to a side bennefit of bringing more life into the taverns. Actually making the Thiefs Guild side quests intresting and challenging. It is to easy to walk into a tavern and forge the books. This could also make the DB members lifes more difficult which is not a bad thing.
These are some really great ideas and I can't wait to see them.

I think as far as seedy taverns go, The Silver Blood Inn in Markarth is about as bad as you can get, thieves who pay attention to shadowmarks can tell you that place is dangerous.

Meek
Most of you don't know me I am sure. I am a Morrowind and Oblivion house and town modder, and also run Oblivion's Real Estate and Skyrim Real Estate websites.

Whoa-yeah, I remember you :wavey: and the excellent work you did on your mods--I'm very excited to see that you're working on Skyrim (bookmarking this thread, don't want to lose you! )

If I have to sing myself I will do it! Btw, I am a classically trained singer.

This sounds like it's going to be amazing - I've come across at least 2 books with songs in in Skyrim, that would easily be appropriate for a bard to sing at a tavern. Sadly, can only remember the title of one: "Mannimarco the Worm". The other one is about Ysgramor et al, IIRC...Don't know if it's easy to just rip it out of the data files, but in case you can't the Mannimarco book can be found on an alchemist's corpse in the forest glade next door to Roadside Ruins near Falkreath. Can't remember the official name of the glade either, but it is a Location.

Hi, excellent idea! I think the New Gnisis Cornerclub should get a particularly indiviual style, all things considered. Probably fairly run down, too, if not outright seedy.
I don't know if it's been mentioned, but the waitress in the bannered mare is quest related, isn't she? So that might not be quite what you wanted, but presumably the idea can be recycled.
Oh and for what good it may do, there's a list of inns in skyrim (a category page on UESP, i'd post it but i'm new and hence not allowed)
Good luck!

Welcome back Meek, nice to see your unique perspective on housing mods filter to Skyrim.

On the notion of 'why go there'. In the vanilla game, aside from a few quests or meeting points there's no other reason to go there.

I think tavern's should be somewhat of a safe haven, as it is now, the camps you find in wilderness offer no difference than spending it in
a bed.

There is also no need to eat/drink/sleep in the game. If there were, which I'm all for btw, Tavern's/inns could be that safe haven. Say outside, there's
a much higher chance to get a disease/cold etc, the food outside would be spoiled or not offer as much healing/strength etc as one that was
prepared inside an Inn/tavern. The beds inside wouldn't have that chance to catch a cold so there's some motivation for wanting to sleep there.

I know it's a bit off-topic as really w a proper hunger/sleep/thirst/disease type mod, updating tavern's and inns would fit perfectly together.

Anyhow, good luck with this as I look forward to playing it.
