I gotta agree with you. Better than Wolves always appealed more to me than Technic, simply because it's that bit more rustic (though more recent changes seem to have muddied the mod) and more in line with the 'flavor' of Minecraft. I don't want to set up machines to automatically mine or build for me... There's plenty of mods out there that elaborate well on Minecraft's concepts - Redpower, for instance, and I don't even like using redstone - but that's like a total conversion. Nothing wrong with it, that's for sure, but I guess I'm more of a traditionalist with my mods. Texture packs, too - I try others and keep going back to vanilla.
To respond to Comrade - I'd slightly decrease the amount of mines and ravines, add rare ruins or sentry posts as you mention, add some of the much-requested block types (marble, red clay/sand, add the darn cocoa plant... At least the apples are already on the changelist), and get on those darn NPC quests and dialogue... Hell, I'll even accept Sims-ish gibberish speak and pointless fetch-quests.
And to Undone/Turns/Whoevermightcare, I've outlined some roads for the north and west parts of Eshara - I think I've laid it out as far as the town could/should possibly extend for awhile. Don't like the alignment, let me know and I'll remove it.
