i don't really like the idea of using tecnik on the server, for a couple of reasons: i think that once every one has their drills set up and large quantities of materials, there will be very little motivation to do any thing. people would need constant large projects to work on and that probably means building new cities and constant migration. and i think people will split up and scatter across the map so that they don't have to share resources.
The only thing people will lose the motivation for is mining, because its bloody boring and time consuming and I'd rather be building things. This doesn't mean we'll constantly migrate from one town/project to the next. We spent about a week on one canton of Vivec and it wasn't even finished. Cities will take longer to make now too if you want them wired up with the latest technology. My ultimate goal is to build a self-contained, self-sufficient superstructure that can house an entire town's population comfortably. Making it self sufficient alone will be a monumental task, not to mention the quantity of raw materials I'll need.
The only thing you have to split up for is oil. The benefits to sticking together are massive, getting a working quarry takes a long time so people who work together and pool resources will have an easier time getting machinery set up. Do you really expect everybody to split up, build their own quarry, their own oil pumps, solar panels, macerators, electric furnaces, power grids, canning machines, farms and eventually nuclear reactors? Or would they stick together and build one of each a lot faster? Not only that but a lot of this stuff is really complicated, people aren't going to master every new feature, its in their interests to work with other people who might be better at certain things.
The only thing people need to split up for is oil but pipes for moving it long distances aren't particularly difficult to make in sufficient quantities.
