Just try it out Mirg. Its pretty awesome stuff. Go get the Technic SSP pack and give it a go. Its helluva fun.
I'd try it out if the whole thing didn't bugger my MC install.

Do you really expect everybody to split up, build their own quarry, their own oil pumps, solar panels, macerators, electric furnaces, power grids, canning machines, farms and eventually nuclear reactors?

I do. People enjoy having their own stuff.

So where do I place it? In a 'mod' folder, in its own folder in the .minecraft folder? I've tried putting it just in .minecraft and in its own fodler, but it didn't work.

Once you use the WinRar and extract it to say MyDocuments, run the Tekkit Installer that should be present and direct it to your .minecraft folder, from here it will create its own folder called mods and multiple others it uses. This should be you good to go.

Download http://tesfan.mchost.org/tekkit.zip . Unpack to wherever you'd like your Technic install to be. This will be a working directory until install is done. Mine stays on the desktop. You can always put a shortcut to launch it afterwards. Read the instructions in the Readme.txt file. Have fun, and remember, the Technic side of the server is at tesfan.mchost.org:25566 .

I'm browsing through the Technic wiki... so confused on all the new additions. I suppose it's good. But confusing.

Most of technic isn't SMP ready yet. Those that are not ready are:

I don't actually know how to do that.

All you need to do is copy down the script in a text file that Lego gave you, and then save it as a .bat. Make sure that you also have a minecraft.exe in the same folder as the .bat is in. Then just go about installing the Technic Pack with java into the folder you have set aside.

Yes and no. I use painterly, so it's a weird hybrid of Painterly coverin 80% of the game, IE base MC items, then you'll see default minerals textures, which are Technics add ons.

I'm apparently unable to use MCpatcher to get HD textures working. So I can have them, but with errors everywhere.

Both MCPatcher and Yogbox/Technic require a clean .jar, so they are incompatible by default.

well actually i am now trying tanks link, but the instructions don't match, once i get to the part where i run the "run second .bat" and then hit "next" there is not next. the "run second .bat" just opens the tekkit installer zip

you know what? never mind, [censored] it spending an hour on half assed installers and readme files is exactly what i did not want to deal with

Will that do for both multi and single-player?

And btw, where is my Spout SSP saves saved? The normal minecraft directory?

Tried to make it as easy as possible. I followed the directions on a new directory, no issues. "Run Second.bat" opens up the Tekkit Installer.jar, which is the installer file. The very first window shows a "Next" button at the bottom right. Steps continue on from there.

Right, here's the minimum-faff approach to creating a version of Minecraft to run Technic, separate from your main Minecraft install (that is, the one in appdata/roaming).

1. Download Minecraft.exe, and the Tekkit.7z archive linked earlier.
2. Create a wholly new folder to install Minecraft in, eg. D:\Program Files\Minecraft Technic
3. Save Minecraft.exe into that folder.
4. Create a new notepad file, enter exactly the text:
set APPDATA=http://forums.bethsoft.com/topic/1330349-unofficial-minecraft-thread-70/%cd%minecraft.exe
5. Save the notepad file into the new Minecraft folder above as Technic.bat - Make sure the file type is "All Files".
6. Double click on the newly created Technic.bat. If it opens it up in Notepad again, then you saved it as a .txt. Create it again, and save as "all files".
7. Minecraft will start up. Enter your login details, and allow the game to download all the necessary files to start up.
8. Close the game.
9. Right click the Tekkit archive (Tekkit_1.0.0_Client.7z), click "extract files"
10. In the "Destination path" field, put in the path to your new Minecraft install folder, followed by "\TekkitInstall" (eg, full text entered into the field will be "D:\Program Files\Minecraft Technic\TekkitInstaller")
11. Click "ok".
12. Open up the folder you just created (eg D:\Program Files\Minecraft Technic\TekkitInstaller), double click on Tekkit_Installer (Executable Jar File)
13. Click "set target Minecraft folder".
14. In the Folder Name field, put the path to your new Minecraft install folder (eg D:\Program Files\Minecraft Technic\TekkitInstaller) followed by \.minecraft (eg put D:\Program Files\Minecraft Technic\.minecraft)
15. Click "next".
16. In the "Presets" field, select "full".
17. Click "next".
18. Wait for the installer to run, then click "Done".
19. Right click on your desktop. Select New->Shortcut.
20. Click "browse".
21. Select the Technic.bat file you created earlier (eg in D:\Program Files\Minecraft Technic). Click "ok".
22. Click "next".
23. In the "Type a name for this shortcut" field, type "Minecraft Technic".
24. Click "Finish".

If you follow these 5 minute instructions to the very letter (capitalisations may vary), you WILL have a fully functional version of Minecraft running Technic, which you start via the Minecraft Technic shortcut. You will also retain your old version of Minecraft, which you can play by using your old Minecraft shortcut.
