[WIPAnnounce] Unofficial Skyrim Patch

Post » Fri May 18, 2012 12:26 am

Well, even though this may be a bit premature, it is good to hear that you will be around to support Skyrim :goodjob: Your fixes for Oblivion were extremely useful. Too bad the Fallouts didn't get as dedicated unofficial patchers.

Greetings and salutations Quarn and Kivan!

Glad to see our resident pit bulls ready to jump into the fray when it releases. You guys are planning on playing it first...right? ;)

I cannot speak for gamesas but I'd imagine they would be grateful. One could only hope they would cherry-pick certain members in the community to beta test the product and find the kinds of problems that typically go into these unofficial fixes which helps the console players too. ;)

For anyone wanting to know a bit more about http://www.havok.com/index.php?page=havok-behavior, get it straight from the horses mouth. They also have a http://www.havok.com/index.php?page=showcase that gives some visual aids on how the behavior system can be used. Remember the awkward transitions in Oblivion when jumping, swimming, etc.? The behavior system should fix most of the transition issues so character / creature movement should flow seamlessly from one animation to another (walk --> run, walk --> jump, walk --> swim, run --> sneak, etc.). This "should" allow the animators more freedom to focus on the primary animations and not have to worry much about all the possible transition...which gets more complicated with more animations you add into the mix.

I think you can access the SDK by clicking on the "TryHavok" button on their site. This might be useful for plugin coders for Blender.

LHammonds

Very nice and thank you. :) I will definitely be giving that a look. I was looking through the video tutorials for it earlier. Nice that you can download it. Havok seems to be cool with freeware using their code as NIFSkope has a Havok-native mesh and MOPP generator in it, so Blender may get a full exporter.

@Kivan, what kind of timeframe do you have in mind for the first UOP?

It seems likely that Bethesda will release some sort of official patch within the first few weeks or months to fix some bugs - does this mean we should plan on adjusting Steam settings not to automatically update?

Yikes... no. :) The USP will be probably be a mod like any other: a plugin (ESP or whatever equivalent its engine uses) and collection of data files (NIF meshes, DDS or whatever textures, MP3 or whatever audio files, etc.)
It won't replace whatever official fixes/changes Bethesda does, unless there's a mistake in them. It won't change the executable program... that's for Bethesda. It won't delete any Bethesda official resources either, just override them.

Example: In Oblivion, you'd get a small bounty, kicked out of guilds and get arrested for hitting your own horse. The first patch was released, and didn't fix it. So we fixed it in the UOP, all through scripting, factions etc. The second official patch was released, and fixed it properly, so we pulled it out of ours.

Radiant Story - This is an update and expansion of "Radiant AI" as it was called in Oblivion. I don't worry about it half as much as one might expect. Why? Because I'm sure it will get severely scaled down by release time, as Radiant AI was. When Oblivion was first demo'ed, Radiant AI had a similar degree of control over the gameworld. By the time it hit the shelves, Radiant was practically gone. Why? It broke quests and caused chaos in the gameworld. Elder Scrolls RPG's are story-driven, not randomly generated, and overshadowing all else, the Main Quest must absolutely work. Given the number of leftover bugs it's difficult enough to get all of the quests working smoothly together, without some random AI element additionally breaking them.
I hope not.... I thought after mentioning it that they would at least have confirmed that it WAS final, especially after the radiant AI kerfuffle.e

Good news, I appreciate that you guys would dedicate your time to make the game the best experience possible for all of us. I'm sure it will be as necessary as it was previously but hopefully there won't be as much work for you guys this time around. ;)

Thank you. Arguably the most important of all mods for an Oblivion setup. It's great to have you guys working on Skyrim.

Lets hope, at the very least, Bethesda can convince Sony and Microsoft to allow them to release your patches (with your permission of course). I don't know how many times I've had to start over because of the thieves guild Amusei bug... :(

Excellent news. :)

Thanks, and keep up the good work.

You are like the "Doctors", "Dentists", "Plastic Surgeons", and "Specialists" of the TES series.

Welcome back.

Quarn's still alive? Thank goodness... his sudden disappearance and rumors I heard made me fear something... physically unfortunate happened to him IRL.

I know there's one for Max, but as Blender's by far the most popular platform (free as opposed to $2K!) it would definitely need one if it hasn't one...

If you think Max is expensive, try Maya. MSRP right now for Maya 2012 is 3495.

And Maya 6 was what I did all my stuff in. When I seen Blender used for mods I wanted to cry. Hate that program so much.

RAI did get an improvement in Fallout 3; the "Sandbox" package, which just has them do whatever (with a few guidelines).

Also, I think the major improvement was more along the lines of ease of implementing behaviors. IIRC, movement and stuff had to be put in scripts in Morrowind. In Oblivion, you make a package form and just plop it into the actor's AI package list, sorting for priority. I never dabbled much with the Morrowind CS, so I'm just going off what I've read about it. Correct me if I have a misunderstanding on it...

Radiant Story sounds like a similar formalization and streamlining of the Encounter System that was in Fallout. The Encounter System was this big huge convoluted script system that didn't lend well to being modded by more than one mod. This Radiant Story sounds like the same thing to the ad-hoc encounter system as Radiant AI was to (my understanding of) Morrowind's actor non-combat behaviors: instead of scripting, it's handled by a form system.

Is the difference between Maya/3DS Max and Blender SO big? I'm curious...

The biggest complaint about Blender is that the UI is incredibly obtuse and unintuitive. You basically have to know the UI in and out or you'll be going "...Buh? :bonk:" It supposedly got an overhaul, but I haven't tried it since the overhaul since I have a student version of Max 2010.

If you moved into a new neighborhood and one of your neighbors said they would mow your lawn, walk your dog and wash your car if it ever needed to be done, would you be offended? Or just relieved and a little creeped out?

I think i'll like you :).

Aw shucks.

Just wanted to throw in my appreciation as the unofficial oblivion patch was an essential mod for all my play throughs. You guys really are mustard!

Thanks. :) I relish the work, but after a two-year absence I mayo may not be able to ketchup.

I'm hoping not as much. I'm glad I started this thread as I've learned (or remembered) a few things from it already. One of them is the hand-placed world, which I think will result in much less cleanup required.

Thank you. Arguably the most important of all mods for an Oblivion setup. It's great to have you guys working on Skyrim.

They certainly would have my permission. I don't think they that they would need either Sony's or Microsoft's if they signed off on third-party mods as if they were Bethesda's own DLC (ie Knights.) THey would be just another plug-in.

Excellent news. :)

Heh... except a bit less pay. This is humanitarian work. Can't be buying boats with it. Doctors Without Borders, not Doctors With Outboarders. :D

I didn't realize he did... sorry to hear that. If he goes missing just drop me a line and I'll see if I can raise him. He does sometimes go a while between checking his e-mail. His ping time should drop as Six-Ones approaches. :)

Egad that is ridiculous. These apps. should really have a home-user version for a tiny fraction of the price for people who don't make money from using them ie hobbyists.

Glad to hear you and Quarn will be back for USP. Bethesda leaves so many bugs untouched...

When applied to companions in New Vegas, that can include crucifying themselves and joining the ...uh lovely ladies doing their provocative dancing :hubbahubba:

Thanks. :) But, er... I thought Quarn was doing the Fallout Unofficial Patch. Maybe not New Vegas...

Oh right, he did  Too much time with New Vegas, i guess

Actually I'm not sure they're going to need to go into the same panic mode they did over Oblivion. The main reason Radiant AI didn't meet the hype was because they got blindsided by the crap system specs of the 360 at the time and had to massively scale back what they could do. So it got gutted, and quite a bit of content we could have had got shelved while they downscaled the game.

They've now had 5+ years of exposure to the platform and know its limitations well. I'm fairly confident they'll be able to make something stick this time that won't require a bunch of downscaling. How that ends up impacting difficulty in USP fixes remains to be seen obviously.

Glad to see you guys are ready to pick up the ball again in case BGS drops it again. I just hope this doesn't give them an excuse to drop the ball again though. Really they are the ones that should be fixing any bug issues, should they arise. So the unofficial patches don't conflict with the official ones, another solution, other than releasing unofficial after an official one, is to work with BGS by giving them your list of reported bugs.

Thank for the announcement :D I was really hoping you guys were gonna work on it, since UOP (other UOP add ons included) is pretty much essential (and thankfully one of the highested rated mods at the nexus). Wish you guys luck, we'll help in any way we can :)

can u make a time machine

:P

hehe

anyways I hope Skyrim is as bug free as a game can get (I know its impossible) so you can make patch with ease :)

and btw is modding legs in 1st person view hard, I mean will it be possible, cause in OB they did it but it was really really hard to do, would you say with the new enhanced animations and new CK will it be easier this time ??!!
