Unofficial "Will My PC Run Skyrim" Thread #51 w hardware gui

Post » Mon May 07, 2012 5:39 am

Righty, debating whether to pay £840 for this computer on the basis of recommendation. It is as follows:

Intel Core i5 2500K Processor Overclocked to up to 4.5GHz

Asus P8Z68-V LE Motherboard

8GB PC3-10666 1333MHz DDR3 Memory (2 x 4GB sticks)

Chillblast NVIDIA GeForce GTX 570 1280MB Graphics Card

1000GB 7200RPM Hard Disk

Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit.

Will this be able to achieve ultra settings? I just need an indication before I pour all this money into it. Determined to play my favourite game to be in the highest quality.

£840 for that is a fantastic price. That will max every game out at the moment :)

I'm running:

Core2Duo E4500
HD5770
4GB RAM

What should I be expecting? I imagine the CPU is going to be the limiting factor.

High mostly your card matches a 260 pretty much just a wee bit less

I have an integrated graphics card (Intel R HD Graphics Family) on my desktop which I know is meant to be terrible and sure enough on 'Can I Run It' it failed (although the rest of my computer passed)

However on 'Can I Run It' I did pass the specs:

Recommended:
Video RAM 1 GB
Pixel Shader version 3.0
Vertex Shader version 3.0

I have:
Video RAM 1.7 GB
Pixel Shader version 4.1
Vertex Shader version 4.1

My PC can run Oblivion on Medium settings. I was thinking of buying a new card anyway but I was wondering if (a) I can add a card to my system when I have an integrated 'card' and B) which one would you recommend for about $100-$150. Thanks.

By the way my computer is a Gateway DX4850
Windows 7
Intel Core i5 2300 @2.8ghz
6gb RAM

Anything that anyone sees there on the site of lies is worthless because of constant errors there. IGPs aren't supported. We need to know your default screen resolution, power supply brand name, model, etc.. Then we can see about suggesting a video graphics card.

I have a laptop...

Specs:

AMD Phenom 2 x4 2.1 ghz
ATI Radeon 5650
4gb ddr3
I will be running @ 720p

I know I'm not going to get amazing quality, but my hope is that I can run it at at least 360 level graphics. I would prefer to get this for my laptop for the mods, but I'm torn between the PC/Xbox. Any help is appreciated.

Between the GTX 460 labelled a "Tie" at Toms Hardware for value, and $325, there isn't one single nVIDIA Geforce they have rated a good value, so at $170 look at this:

http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/best-graphics-card-gaming-performance,3042-4.htm

So your saying thishttp://www.amazon.com/dp/B003ZMTPEW/ref=asc_df_B003ZMTPEW1768845?smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER&tag=pg-469-34-20&linkCode=asn&creative=395097&creativeASIN=B003ZMTPEW is a good buy? (darn good price after rebate too.)

Main question is, is it worth for me (I won't be spending a penny since I own both processors already and can do the work myself) to swap Q9450 from laptop to desktop and E8400 from desktop to laptop?

Will having an old quad like the Q9450 be making a good and visible difference in the game?

Or would it be better having a core 2 duo E8400 overclocked @ 4Ghz?

I doubt you will se a significant improvement just by moving to a quad-core. Since Skyrim is also being developed for consoles, there won't be very much optimization for anything beyond dual-core cpus. The E8400 is an awesome chip anyways, as you probably already know.

You will also lose your warranty for your laptop if you open it up...

Edit: But now I am curious SO if you do this please post a before/after comparison!
Edit Edit: won't this render your laptop useless anyways? Do you just not care about it?

Admittedly, the average Mobility HD 5670 is !5-20% slower than a Desktop version of the same card, but we believe you have some leeway with Skyrim, such that even your card should provide you with an edge above and beyond console quality. Maybe not a broad-ranging edge, but enough better to tell the difference.

I would have sworn that Toms Hardware quoted $155, not $166 plus shipping. My mind is going! $106 is a fantastic cost after rebate.

SO can my laptop run the game lag free at medium settings with these specs:

My specs:

RAM: 6 GB
Video Card: NVIDIA GeForce GT 540M (1 GB)
CPU: Intel Core i5 2410M(2.30GHz)

I don't know what resolution.... My current screen resolution is 1366x768, I don't know what resolution the game would be at, but something decent I guess would be good.

Personally, I do not have great confidence in your particular graphics card. I doubt you can beat a combination of medium image quality with medium screen resolution.

I have a similar setup:
Intel Core 2 Duo CPU E8400
6GB RAM
Geforce GTX 460 1GB

I hope I can run it on high settings (@ 1680 x 1050).

But you should buy a GTX 460. Its faster and cheaper than a GTX550 Ti. The 550 Ti has alot VRAM, but the memory is slow. With a bit overclocking you can get a GTX 460 close to the GTX 470.
The 550 Ti is usually quite a bit less than the GTX 460 if you shop around. The HD 6790 however is the most powerful card I've found for ~$110 after rebates. I did find one GTX 460 at $120 after rebates though (which is way lower than every other one I've seen), which I'll link after the next response. Also, don't underestimate your card, which is significantly more powerful than what they recommend for high.
That's not a great price. It's more a typical price after rebate for the GTX 460. This is the best deal I've found thus far, but I didn't look up how people trust the brand yet:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814500202

Since the rebate is valid to 11/30 personally I'm cruising around for better deals though, and I'll grab it before the offer is over if I don't find better. I'll play it on a GTS 450 until then.

Might as well post my specs...

GTX 550 Ti
AMD Phenom II X4 Processor 3.20 GHz
8GB RAM

How well will my PC handle it and for about how long do you think I can play it before taking a break?

Thanks...

You should be able to run it on High no problem at all. Maybe even some settings on Ultra.

Just got a notebook today:

AMD A6 CPU (2.3Ghz Quad Core)
6 Gigs of DDR3 RAM

And now for the unsure part;

AMD 6520G GPU (I think it's integrated, but I think it's a new gen one, so no idea/ I heard the newest gen of Intel integrated GPUs were much improved, not sure about AMD ones.)

Edit: Forgot about quad-core

that's not a gaming GPU, i'm not sure you could play the game on more than low settings.
