Unofficial "Will My PC Run Skyrim" Thread #51 w hardware gui

Post » Mon May 07, 2012 8:51 am

Well if you look at games like Deus ex human revolution and Battlefield bad company 2 if your able to run them... then mayybee MAYYBEE MAYBEE!!! you will be able to run skyrim fairly well. The system reqiurements on those games compared to skyrim's aren't really that different at all. For example
Deus ex human revolution reqiures abit more graphic power then skyrim ( correct me if im wrong ) but less RAM and bad company 2 also reqiures about the same graphics power but less RAM. My opinion i don't think RAM would be soo much of a problem just as long as you don't have DDR1 RAM or anything below 2GIGS of it.

Yeah personally i don't see Skyrim being a cpu-heavy game...if anything, it might only force us to use medium or high shadow (at least my DOW2 says shadows need a fast cpu) instead of ultra, something like that. But who knows

Yea, personally if its a case where im getting good fps in dungeons on ultra and its dipping here or there in the open world i can live with that. Also the higher you set the graphics the more likely that you take the load off the cpu and bottleneck the gpu instead, just comes down to if our dual cores are fast enough to keep thereselves floating above 30fps.

My E8400 OC'ed to 3.6 Ghz with a 5850 and 4GB ram... you think it'll run on ultra at 1680x1050?

Possible, definitely close.

Why?

-1680x1050 is a low resolution for the HD5850
-DX11 optimizations without DX11's taxing features.
-Game engine still has traits of Gamebryo, which always liked higher CPU clock speeds.

I doubt you'll need to tweak the settings much.

I dont see that 8800 doing high, medium with that card at most imo. Though its a good system besides the card so it be a simple upgrade.

lol yup jus upgrade the graphics card you gotta quad core i7 and 6gb of ram. Geting better graphics card should do perfectly fine. Can't WAIIIT for this game im just hoping and preying it can run with my current CPU.

Thanks guys. Sadly an upgrade is not an option. Cash is tight. I will have to make do. So I could definitely get by on Medium? At least I don't have to play on Low.

My specs(laptop) are as follows:

i7 2630QM quad core @ 2.00Ghz
GTX560m 1.5 gigs ram
12 gigs RAM
1920x1080 screen

Got a few questions:

Firstly, is Skyrim predicted to be more hardware intensive than Witcher 2?
On my laptop, Witcher 2 runs smoothly on high spec but I have to step down the resolution to 1366x768.
Will I be able to run Skyrim at that setting or maybe a little better?

Secondly, in order to optimize the settings, what compromise would be best between AA, vsync, detail level and screen resolution? (I'm not too sure what AA and vsync do exactly)
Would it be better to lower the resolution and higher details or vice versa?

Sorry if I went off topic on this one.
Thanks

Ehh well.. 8800gt is not that great but you could most likely be able to play without lag..

EDIT: i hope its not as intense as witcher 2 i couldn't play that game at all i lagged like hell in that...
Then again system reqs eve nsays what resolutiin 1920x1080 2.0ghz dual core or equivalent, Thats the only part im worried about the rest meets the reccommended ....

Its hard to say for sure, im guessing medium and its important to remember that everything here is speculation. Still, i would be surprised if you cant get mostly medium.

My guess personally is that skyrim is going to be similar performance wise, though maybe more intensive in the open world where your dealing with the huge draw distances.I think you will get high with some AA on at that res, vsync just locks the framerate to prevent tearing is all, AA cleans edges up.

My Mobility HD5870 is fine with the Witcher 2 on high @ 1600x900 w/in game AA and my CPU is slower.... so something is wrong there. I think you could match my settings, 720p is too low to let the 560m run free.

Unless screen tearing is an big problem in a game, I usually turn that off. I'd start testing with high @ 1080p and Vsync off.

Im starting to have bigger doubts right now.. If the game really is going to be quite similar to withcer 2 performance wise im not going to be able to play it at all.. My computer lagged at a really unplayable framerate for witcher 2... and alot of people are saying skyrim will too be a CPU
intensive GAME.. I guess im jus hoping that the minimum reqs 2.0ghz dualcore or equivalent is good and accurate. I wouldn't wanna lag with unplayable framerates.

Its hard to say for sure, im sure you will be able to play the game, but no one knows for sure how well C2D's will scale yet. Your 5770 is fine obviously so i think you will be able to get a mix of medium and high. Just going to have to fiddle with the settings and see what causes the biggest hit on cpu performance.

It's not going to be any CLOSE to Witcher II performance wise!

The game is MADE TO RUN ON 360 AND PS3, those are 6 years old consoles, so even the highest settings with max AA and whatnot is not even close to Witcher II's performance hunger.

Stop scaring each other FOR NO REASON AT ALL, like when everyone went crazy what will Crysis 2 do to theyre PC's and I could run it on High on my old PC which was like 3,5 years old...

I agree and all i really meant was if he was running the witcher 2 on high he could expect that or better on Skyrim. Also thats why i keep saying here its all speculation, im not trying to scare people out of buying it but on the other hand i would rather be conservative in my guess so people dont buy it and then find out they cant run it anywhere close.

I need advice please:

My main gaming desktop pc has got an E8400 (that's a core 2 duo) overclocked from 3Ghz to 4Ghz, 4GB DDR2 RAM, and a 5970 graphics card.

I know I can run the game but my issue lies here:

I also have a laptop, which is actually a "desktop replacement".

It's got a Q9450 CPU inside. This Q9450 is a desktop processor, meaning I can just swap it to run on my main gaming desktop detailed above. I know not only because of internet research but also because I built my desktop myself and a couple of months ago also dismantled my laptop, including processor, put fresh tim paste etc...

_________________________

My question is this:

Is it worth to swap processors for Skyrim?

Bearing in mind that the E8400 dual core is at 4Ghz (and that it's E0 stepping meaning it can be overclocked high on air cooling).

And considering the Q9450, perhaps I might get it to 3Ghz or possibly 3.5Ggz......... I dunno since I never tried it.

________________________

Main question is, is it worth for me (I won't be spending a penny since I own both processors already and can do the work myself) to swap Q9450 from laptop to desktop and E8400 from desktop to laptop?

Will having an old quad like the Q9450 be making a good and visible difference in the game?

Or would it be better having a core 2 duo E8400 overclocked @ 4Ghz?

It really is hard to say at this point. I personally have my doubts this game will even efficiently use more than two cores, but we'll just have to wait and see. At least you have the option to try both out ;)

I have an integrated graphics card (Intel R HD Graphics Family) on my desktop which I know is meant to be terrible and sure enough on 'Can I Run It' it failed (although the rest of my computer passed)

However on 'Can I Run It' I did pass the specs:

Recommended:
Video RAM 1 GB
Pixel Shader version 3.0
Vertex Shader version 3.0

I have:
Video RAM 1.7 GB
Pixel Shader version 4.1
Vertex Shader version 4.1

My PC can run Oblivion on Medium settings. I was thinking of buying a new card anyway but I was wondering if (a) I can add a card to my system when I have an integrated 'card' and B) which one would you recommend for about $100-$150. Thanks.

By the way my computer is a Gateway DX4850
Windows 7
Intel Core i5 2300 @2.8ghz
6gb RAM

Please don't crosspost. You have an open thread here:
http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1253119-integrated-graphics-card-replacement/

Intel i5-750 2.66GHz
Biostar HD 6870
8GB DDR3

Skipping on the very surface of the Lake of Ultra Settings?

Likely.

Thanks for the advice...just tried turning the vsync and a couple other settings and was able to bump up the resolution without a hitch.
I think I'm set then...Fun times ahead!!

GeForce GTX 570
AMD Phenom II X4 965@3.4Ghz
8gb RAM 1333 DDR3

Aiming for 1080p, 4xAA, Vsync via D3DOverrider and some good frames, not necessarily 60 though. I should be good, right?

That should max the game fine at 1920x1080 even without a overclock, but if you still want to do some research on it. Overclock.net has a ton of good information, theres a lot to it though so just make sure you know what you are doing and what your hardware is capable of before you change any settings in your bios. Im just learning a bit on it myself to be honest.
