Unofficial "Will My PC Run Skyrim" Thread #51 w hardware gui

Post » Mon May 07, 2012 3:25 am

Just got a notebook today:

AMD A6 CPU (2.3Ghz Quad Core)
6 Gigs of DDR3 RAM

And now for the unsure part;

AMD 6520G GPU (I think it's integrated, but I think it's a new gen one, so no idea/ I heard the newest gen of Intel integrated GPUs were much improved, not sure about AMD ones.)

Edit: Forgot about quad-core
The one thing we're not sure about, and don't have a lot of benchmarking to work with, is whether the unified cores with graphics share cache RAM or not. One of the big problems with chipset based IGPs is having to share Main Memory, not fast video RAM. Sandy Bridge video is much, MUCH faster than any previous IGP, so I am thinking it most be doing something different, and whatever they can do, then AMD was probably ALREADY doing it. I suspect that you have a faster than usual Low End / borderline Medium graphics device. I suspect, without a lot of proof, that it can run pretty close to as well as an HD 5570, so Half Low, Half Medium, hedging that a little.

I'll bet you can find articles at Anand Tech as well as Toms Hardware, with their own bench marking, if you chase the articles down.

Okay here is mine.....I am holding out hope for at least medium.

i5 480m
NVIDIA GT 425M 1GB DDR3
1366x768

Thanks in advance!

Your graphic card is in the middle-end segment of laptop cards. It doesnt have that much power behind it. Also your i5 is a dual core cpu.

As you see Skyrim is CPU hungry (Quad Core recommended) and your graphic card (compared to desktop pc's) is also slow. I would say it will work because it matches the min. specs. I would say it will be between low and middle. But as I know Bethesda you will have quite the options in the video settings so you can fidle around and find a fine match between low and middle, maybe one or another effect on high (being much optimistic)

Thank you much for the detailed response! I am happy I will be able to run it I bought this laptop about 5 months ago to run WoW on high and it did/does. Well, anyway....thank you again my heart has not been shattered :hugs:

Your card is a faster middleclass graphic card. It plays BF3 well in Min. But BF3 is hungry as hell (for no reason if you ask me but nevermind) Your PC can handle Skyrim would say somwhere around middle something maybe on high.

Most likely mid/high settings, since its a laptop you wont run it at high res! its not a particular good gfx card you have but neither a bad one. (its pretty good for a normal laptop)
So you should have no worries about it running skyrim

The list says that my GTX 560 Ti will get me to ultra settings? Really? Because I thought the 560 was more in the "upper mid-range" region than the "high-end" region of graphics cards?

560ti is an upper mid-range card. Even so, its one of the best 500 series cards around (and one of the best cards period), and will be fine for running Skyrim on Ultra, depending on your other hardware. It runs pretty much any game to date on at least high settings. Even Metro 2033

Yeah but Skyrim doesnt need a high-end card. Its more CPU hungry. When you look at the recommended specs a quad core is asked. (You cant find many games wich want a quad core as recommended specs)

Medium, possibly high at that res.

My E8400 OC'ed to 3.6 Ghz with a 5850 and 4GB ram... you think it'll run on ultra at 1680x1050?

I dont think an E8400 even with overclock will handle the game well at Ultra settings at that res...medium-high is my thoughts.

E8400 in my opinion shud be absolutely fine to max out teh game. Just cause it says quadcore for reccommended dsnt mean the game is going to be very massively CPU crazy. Games like DEUS ex needs a quadcore for reccommended and ive played that game on
max settings 1920x1080 all settings at max except AA AF vsync is turned of. I've got an intel pentium E5200 @2.5ghz and im able to play games like metro 2033, bad company 2 and deus ex human revolution like i just mentioned on really nice decent settings. So an E8400 should be perfectly fine at a resolution like that.

Not sure either way, im in the same boat myself with my e8500. I overclocked it to 3.8 and im getting a 6970 tomorrow. Its going to depend on how cpu heavy the game is but my gut says a fast dual core is going to be fine for it though its hard to say. Fingers crossed i suppose.

Yeah personally i don't see Skyrim being a cpu-heavy game...if anything, it might only force us to use medium or high shadow (at least my DOW2 says shadows need a fast cpu) instead of ultra, something like that. But who knows

The games you listed (metro, BF) are highly GPU intensive on higher settings. Skyrim will be harder on your cpu than anything else. I really doubt the e8400 will be able to do Ultra settings without any lag. Unless MAYBE your gpu is total overkill.
