Wait so...... is Skyrim released?

Post » Sun May 06, 2012 11:40 pm

Console players can play it. PC player can only look at the box and tenderly caress the cd and kiss it and cuddle up to it and sleep with it at night,.
That will change come next gen when all console games will ALSO be steam enabled and Microsoft, Sony and Valve will have the last laugh as they completely and utterly remove resales from the entire industry. Mark my words, it's going to happen.

Unfortunately you're likely right, because of this obsession with making all media digital. I hate it.

Ask them if they are aware of the street date issue after you have paid for and have your copy. I would love to hear their story on why it was ok for them to sell ahead of everyone else...

Well I might keep them on my friendly side, seeing as I'm fed up with ordering games online and recieving them 5 days after release...

Yes, there are other easier, much more accessible and user friendly gaming consoles than PC.

The insignificantly better graphics and power is not worth the hassle of a PC. Console all the way.

This is a goofy statement.
1) The only "Hassle" of playing ES games on PC is the necessity of installation, there's no hassle after that. And if you have average or better PC user skills, there's no hassle involved there. The only other possible hassle is the installation of user mods... which brings me to:
2) The reason to play ES games on PC is mods/modding, which means the ability to endlessly customize and improve the game over time, as well as add massive replay-ability that console players will never experience.
For Morrowind and Oblivion both, I've played dozens of mods that outstripped official DLCs in terms of quality and amount of content both. By two years after release, there are major graphics overhauls that make the game look new again, as well as one or two gameplay overhauls that will give you a much more interesting, challenging game.

I've got mine pre-ordered from Amazon so I can't just call them up and ask if they can ship early.

Shops are obliged to heed the street date if they want to continue getting future releases on time.

Yes, but that's the only thing they can do. Violating release dates is not akin to terrorism like publishers and big retailers love to pretend.

If a shop breaks release date, the companies can (and will) choose not to ship them the product on time anymore.

That may apply to the big retailers, but they are the ones who wanted the street dates in the first place. A small shop doesn't order the game from the publisher directly. gamesas couldn't handle two million orders from 50000 shops all around the world. This is what warehouses are for, and they don't have the time to attend to a blacklist of shops that aren't supposed to be delivered before a certain day.

The industry's solution is DRM that doesn't allow you to play the game before release day no matter when you bought it. Next gen consoles will have a similar mechanism.

Netherlands broke the street date? I feel a disturbance in the force, it feels like a whole country is just about to be sued.

Edit: I would like to see the proof that stores in the Netherlands are actually selling this game though :P

Yes almost every store in the Netherlands is breaking street date with the release of Skyrim. Supposedly because the street date that was communicated to them was the 8th of November.
Here's your proof: http://kotaku.com/5857428/the-elder-scrolls-v-skyrim-on-sale-now-in-the-netherlands

it's also out in Beligum btw.
I skipped class and rushed to the store when I got my text message saying that I could pick up Skyrim.
Imagine my suprise and frustration when Steam said the game couldn't be installed.
I know it's only a few more days, but believe me, it's HELL when you already paid for the copy an the disc is in your computer.
I did not know Steam could *lock* installs, this is wrong on so many levels, when a store sells it and I buy it, I should be able to play it, period.

The 360 version of the game was leaked, and some retail stores think it's k00l to sell the game early.

I get that, but why ship the game to retail stores days in advance ??
and why do said stores have the right to sell so early ?

It's the principle, i pay for something, I expect it to work, if it doesnt work, I got screwed on a sale, I want some answers/apologies.

I am not blaming Bethesda btw, they say 11.11.11 and that's fine by me, but a store should NOT sell a game that can't be played/installed, I call that theft

it's one thing to pirate a game.
it's another when retail stores sell legitimate copies of the game days before you can actually do anything with it

Thanks for the info ronetor. :vaultboy:

Luckily i'm not 10 years old and can wait the 3 days until the actual release date. (Not bashing those who got the game, bashing those with no patience who cannot wait 3 days).

Said stores should not be getting a Bethesda game again. Wouldn't be so cool then would they!

I picked it up with flowers and jellybeans in my heart...
I rushed to the store, caressing the disc as I skipped back to my house...
I jammed it into my computer, like it was the first girl I ever loved...

And then Steam broke my heart, by saying I cannae install it now.

I have the entire day off tomorrow, and I now have to spend it looking at Skyrim, sitting there, waiting to be installed, knowing that on friday....I have to work...

You should take this up with the retailer, it's their fault you are unhappy. They have actually commited two wrongs here, one is selling the game before they were supposed to, which violates an agreement they have with Bethesda, and two was selling the game to you, with the expectations you could play it, which they should have known wasn't true prior to street date.

It's awesome that the rest of us...Especially the PC crowd that's supported TES all these years...are just sitting around, twiddling our thumbs, waiting for an arbitrary date.
I hear you, but it is NOT surprising. Check how much bigger Console market is compared to PC (nad rising). Similar feeling must have had the PnP oldies, thinking "we made rpg's a success", etc... and they get what nowadays in PnP?
