What game lore do you find most interesting?

Post » Sat May 12, 2012 10:57 pm

I used to love Fallout lore but it has become a bit dull as centuries have passed and the developers have been adamant that the series won't leave USA.
They also insist to destroying all the cool guys, like Enclave.

Dragon Age is the only (VG) fantasy universe I take seriously. BW's skill in inverting fantasy clichés is absolutely spectacular. However, I detest Dragon Age II to the core.

Not a fan of TES universe. Too generic for my taste. It's not bad though.

The world of http://finalfantasy.wikia.com/wiki/Ivalice, setting for a handful of Square's games and created by Yasumi Matsuno

-Final Fantasy XII
-Final Fantasy XII: Revenant Wings
-Final Fantasy Tactics
-Final Fantasy Tactics Advance
-Final Fantasy Tactics A2: Grimoire of the Rift
-Vagrant Story

It's not fleshed out nearly as much as some other games/series, but it's interesting nonetheless.

Edit- Metal Gear Solid's is great as well.

Madness and Heresy.
That's exactly what it is, if someone likes the lore of other games than TES! Burn the heretics and stop this madness!!11

I'd personally say... Fallout.

TES is one that still manages to interest me. I love reading about "current events" in each new game to see what's going on in the universe. Demon's Souls had me mired in it's lore for a long time, and I must have read every page of the wikis for it to fill in all the gaps and hints about Boletaria.

And, of all things, Pokemon. Sure it's all monsters and fighting, but behind that are creation myths and gods and legends, fossils and organized crime, gyms and towns that all specializse in something. I like the story of the games, and sometimes with the "main quest" was longer so I could keep playing it. ^_^

No particular order, except for the two Thief games being near and dear to my heart:

Thief: The Dark Project

Thief: The Metal Age
I find it absolutely amazing the amount of Lore that TTLG manged to create out of those 40 or so levels of sneaking. From the brilliant cutscenes, to interesting scraps of paper, to the actual content of the levels themselves, the Thief series (and I would reluctantly add Deadly Shadows) is very lore-rich. Of course, the really only have The City to work with, which is probably a good thing. I'd rather have a detail-rich City than a bland and unoriginal countryside.

Huh, never heard of those games. I better check em out

EDIT: Now that I think about it, they sound a bit familiar. Odd.

Old series. Started with boardgames back in the 80's, eventually got lots of novels and several PC and console games.

Fallout and TES are tied here, yeah, Fallout's isn't as deep and far reaching but I still love it.

Star Wars.

Warcraft.

One thing I could never get into was 40k, everything about it was just too dam...actually I like the lore a lot, I just can not stand the space marine's looks. Necrons ftw.

I would second (or third or fourth) the vote for Vampire: The Masquerade. They had so much lore from the PnP game and books to build on. It's hard to achieve that kind of deep background with a videogame-only franchise.

You would think it a more common thing to do when writing/designing a world to go to the source of these kinds of games. Often the basic books alone have to be stuffed chalk full of lore. Not to mention all the addon books to keep making money. There's few Video Game worlds that get close to being as in depth and detailed as a table top games. SImply due to the difference of medium. So it would make a good place to stsrt looking for people to help custom design a world for you.

The Myst series. (including URU). Not exactly like most of the games mentioned here, but it has a pretty good amount of lore that I found extremely interesting. Enjoyed the crap out of those games too.

Battletech (MechWarrior) has the best lore to date. I like my scifi without any weird aliens and stuff.

TES Lore gets top cake for me.

The Might and Magic games Lore was very interesting up until it did the whole switch thing. I only played M&M 6 and 7 plus HOMM 1-6. 4-6 are in some new crappier world because the old one blew up or something in M&M 8-??.

AC Lore is really great.

Fallout's Lore interests me a lot.

Star Wars Lore is fun but I never got too deep into it.

The new retconned necrons are LOL. They aided the Space Marines in fighting someone, and they have trade networks now. Some eldrich horror, more like well demenoured grandfather who just woke up froma nap and is picking up his job where it left off. They went from awesome to lame in one book. Disgraceful.

Isn't Warhammer a game also? Sorry if I sounded silly if it isn't just a game
