What's the big idea with everyone playing as a Nord?

Post » Mon Jun 04, 2012 7:48 am

Nords are the superior race duh.... Joking aside, I got to level 40 or 50 in Morrowind and I completed Oblivion and Skyrim first as a Nord.

Seriously, why the virtual racism?!

I haven't touched the humans yet. I typically go for non-human options (or different human options) when available.

Not because humans are bad or anything (I love the Imperials and Reguards) but I am a human and when I RP I enjoy the chance to explore something different (or try to). I love the look of the none human races (love the alienish Mer, love the orks, love the beat races), love TES lore surrounding them - love the non-humans full stop.

I have not played a Nord before.

You should make a poll, you might be surprised by the number of the people who DIDNT make a Nord.

Exactly.

Before the game came out, somebody was talking about making a meathead warrior type. DOZENS of people pounced on him, telling him the character was so generic and overused.

Ironically enough, that showed that a pure warrior class was the least popular choice...

I don't know why people are so concerned about what other people play in a single player game.

I have only played Nords, because I like Norse culture and it just seems like the best story- expat Nord comes home, gets caught up in the civil war and ends up being the savior of Skyrim. However I played as a Bosmer to about level 15 and I don't recall anyone making disparaging remarks to her about her race, only other Bosmer commenting positively. I just think people are being very sensitive about their special snowflakes. It's really uncalled for to question the writers about creating an atmosphere that is true to the Nord theme which is that they're proud, insular, rowdy, and they don't fawn over you. Over anyone, other Nords included. Everyone has to prove themselves- get over it.

Don't you like blond hair and blue eyes? :woot:

Seriously, I have a couple of characters that are Redguards and a couple of Altmer--I would never play an Imperial or a Breton. :yucky:

Played as Nord since Morrowind. My second choice/character is mostly an orc, I always love calling myself HULKSMASH and seeing how much havoc I can unleash.

Skyrim belongs to the Nords.

(Lydia, Mjoll, Jordis, Aela, and every town guard says so)

My main characters in Daggerfall and Morrowind were female Nords. In Oblivion a male Imperial. Playing female Nord again this time around. I'm just a Nord lover

As for the racial undertones of the game, well, Elder Scrolls lore is steeped in racism and bigotry, so the writers pretty much nailed it

becouse the nord is the closest thing to an actual human.

i cant play with an wood elf (or any char what doesnt look like human), did u see the looks who would ever play with something so beaten up.
they all got ugly faces, the wrong skin tone. wrong looks.... where the nord is just.... a human.

started 4 characters and all of them are nords

The "wrong" skin tone? The "wrong" looks? Which means what, exactly? What is the "right" skin tone and looks?

Really if it were so important to me to play vanilla generic fantasy elves and humans I'd buy any number of the vanilla, generic fantasy games out there and bask in the bland, vanilla generic-ness of it.

But to answer your question - I would, and they aren't beat up.

No, no, OP you have it all wrong. You see nords are just 'supposed' to be the most popular.

It's a grand plan from the mighty kingdom of Argonia to make the nords popular so they can be swiped off the face of Tamriel.
For you see, the worthy Hist know that a populated race's province is normally the next to be butchered by the workings of the dread father Sithis.
It happened with Morrowind, it happened with Cyrodiil, it'll happen to Skyrim! I tell you. But the argonians are smart, avoid this by being alien they do.
Although don't mention this to anyone else- but everyone secretly wishes they were an argonian anyway. They're just that naturally lovable.

why do you assume racism? It's a game about the nord homeland. People play as nords.

Even if it's half serious or not serious at all, don't throw words like this around people are very sensitive about racism. Immediately reminds me of that british woman that said using white toilet paper is racist, based on the same random associations. Keep that nonsense out.

I play as a Nord because the game is set in Skyrim and my character is a Son of Skyrim fighting against the Imperials. I don`t think Ulfric and Co would appreciate it if I was a dunmer fighting for the rebellion...given the racism that is prevalent in Windhelm and other parts.

My first character was Nord, as with all the civil war going on, being a Nord was more emotionally engaging experience.

Nord is the most fitting race to RP with, and i've considered changing my Dunmer to a nord (pc). I like the viking-ish mythology and creatures of skyrim so much and the only fitting way to rp a viking is a nord.

I don't see how people playing as something is racist...

But I always have a few Argonian characters.

its just.... i dont like them, why becouse well they are diffrend, i always end up making a new char to the one who looks like a human.
cant play with something that doesnt exist. i know its an fantasy game, but my mind is always set to human :)

i just cant be happy with a char other then a human look. (yes even if i only play in first person mode, and u dont see your character)

but its just me, with an explanation of why i wont play other then nord characters ^^

Nord is the only race that makes sense with how Bethesda structured this story. Also, if you even remotely RP Nord is the only race you can play to experience the Stormcloak storyline.

^^ not really, i RP my khajiit as being born in skyrim but his parents are from the northern parts of elswyer ( The barbaric tribes of khajiit ).

And my khajiit, want's to prove to nords , in his homeland ( yes skyrim is his homeland, don't tell me only nords can be from there because mer are the real original race to hail from skyrim ) that his people, can indeed be honorable, and fight for the land he loves to be Independent from imperial rule

if you RP, like you said, anything is possible mate :D

I played as a Nord on my first playthrough, I played as an Imperial in Oblivion and Dark Elf in Morrowind. But my main game is always a Bosmer.

Not true, talk to Ralof when you and him make it back to Riverwood from Helgen. He'll tell you even if you are not Nord you can help free Skyrim because to him it is the right thing to do.
