Why do Bethesda insist on NOT having capes in TES? (console

Post » Wed Jun 13, 2012 3:37 am

I tried some cape/cloak mods, but playing in 3rd person saw your legs clipping through the capes all the time. It looked bad enough for me to remove the mod, though I would like to have a good looking cape/cloak on my character.

We really need to start distinguishing between capes and cloaks here. CLOAKS are tough garments worn by adventurers and travelers alike for their quality of providing protection from the weather and absorbing the occasional sword stroke. CAPES are cheesy pieces of colored cloth worn by the superheroes of the imaginatively-brain-dead cartoonists of Marvel and DC. What we need are some CLOAKS such as the ones worn by Aragorn in LOTR and Sean Bean in Game of Thrones.
Alucard can wear either a cloak or a cape, and they all look similar in 64-bit PlayStation graphics. Although the worst variant is called "cape" and the best variant is called "cloak", yes.

Mage hoods with Light Armour enchantments, then

But they still do not have an armor rating and are classified as cloth.

Maybe so, but will it not suffice? Does it not in part answer your request for more variety in hoods?

thank you for posting this.

it all sounds good in theory, and if done awsome would obviously be awsome. but as i stands it would just be one more poorly implimented feature people complain about. . .:(

no it would not because perks require you to have a full set of light armor, a cloth hood enchanted with + light armor wont work.

the normal thieves guild hood is a good example of a good light hood, and i have seen mods for an awsome fur hood as well.

EDIT: should have multi qouted, sorry :(

No it doesn't because the only mage hood you can get unenchanted is the tan one which svcks. That isn't much of a variety.

I wish i was on the PC so I could get cool mods like that, but I play on the PS3. I like the TG hood it looks cool, if you could get a hood like that, that wasn't already enchanted then I would be happy. Same goes for the DB hood.

Yep, happens here, too, with Winter is Coming mod. But the clipping is mostly appreciable when you run/sprint, and I never sprint in 3rd person, so...

If you only walk, the clipping can be mistaken for normal behaviour (people who wears such capes also shows their feet behind them when they walk). It's a minor issue, but hey...if I had to uninstall all the clothing mods that have minor clipping issues, I'd go nvde thought Skyrim :P

thing with capes in skyrim is they dont really look good and bethesda probably realised that, theres no real physics, look at two worlds 2 thats how you do capes, but i bet it would be too much for consoles wich is why we dont have good ones

People blame consoles for everything. I think PC users are why Bethesda leave out some things because they assume modders will just mod them in. But on topic I think the physics are the reason why they left out capes besides the few we have.

Two are clothing, so only mages can actively use them. The last one requires you to join the Thieve's Guild. Not a really promising list unless you are a thief, mage or both.

Well a cape certainly shouldn't act as heavy armor...

In that case, I meant like minded people. I know I don't speak for everyone, but with the response this thread has had and the support the idea has recieved I would think it was safe to say "people". I'm not using it to justify my tastes or preferences. For one thing I may be in support of this idea but if it doesn't get implemented then it's no skin off my nose.

Minded people ? i think every thread open here about a "missing feature" will have some support. its mathematical.

But this isn't sufficient to use the term "people" like you and others do so frequently.

Perhaps using "i want this" would be more appropriate, just a suggestion in good-faith,nothing more

There are three outfits that come with capes in Skyrim for you to choose from:

Redguard garb
Hammerfell garb
Nightingale armor
Isn't one of those only worn by the Dark Brotherhood Redguard and not available without console commands?

You can only obtain the Redguard Garb by

Spoiler
Destroying the Dark Brotherhood and taking the clothes from Nazir.

Capes are genuinely something I don't remember people asking for in the production period. I must have just missed them.

Its honestly not something that appeals to me personally - I tend to equate capes to superhero stuff, not mages etc.

Because capes look crap without proper physics apllied and they interfere with almost all the weapon combinations in Skyrim.
Clipping galore with swords and 2 handed weapons.

pre-release there was a furor of anguish over the apparent lack of capes with appropriate physics and in particular you might recall "Stormcloaks without cloaks? wtf!" popping up all over the show...

Cloaks makes perfect sense to a cold and windy landscape such as Skyrim.

It's used not for effectiveness in battle but for cover while traveling.

It can also be used as a ceremonial piece. A general can wear a cloak to distinguish himself from the lower ranks.

No fantasy setting imho, is complete without cloaks.

I really think they should make an effort to add it, people can always choose not to use them too. Just make sure it's strictly decorative.

And I agree it is a trivial complaint, but it is also a very trivial ask.

Fantasy = cloaks, I mean that's just the way it is and since there's always a mod for it that is very popular... why not add it from the go?

And also since there's a cape on the nightingale armor... they can't be THAT worried about the physics and animations.
