Why did they remove attributes

Post » Tue May 08, 2012 6:21 am

Did I read right (I've not been following all that closely) that attributes have been removed?

Is this for the consolers or was there a reason for it?

How the bloody hell would Consoles benefit from Attributes being removed?

Well lots of game changes that don't make sense to me (some call it dumbing down) are for the consoles.

Only the attributes like strength, personality, agility, etc have been removed. Numbers like skills are still in.

Attributes have been removed, and perks have been introduced to replace them.

You know it!

Not really upset and still can't wait to play - just never played an RPG with no attributes before, it's going to feel strange.

Because they were restrictive to the natural evolution of a character and extraneous when someone figured out that you could simply directly change all of the attribute-affected stats yourself for the exact same result.

It's a design decision for this game, it's not necessarily how the TES games will be from now on. Some of the attributes may as well return in TES VI. It's just how they felt they want the game this time. We'll all see how that works, Bethesda people say it works. If the RPG mechanics are not sufficient to make well customized builds, they will probably be the first ones to bash this design decision when they advertise TES VI, like they've been constantly bashing Oblivion this year to make Skyrim look prettier ;)

What they removed: Oblivion's attributes that we had no real control over unless we micro-managed skill training.
What they added instead: Directly assigning points to the main attributes that everything ends up boiling down to.

It's not a black-and-white feature-got-removed thing.

Hmm, so what happens when you are poisoned or diseased? Do it affect skills and the attributes that are still in?

The main effect they had was raising the Health / Magicka / Stamina (fatigue). You can still do that. Instead of giving it to you free with a class selection, you get to earn it through playing for it. It is basically the same thing. You get to raise one of the three H/M/S by 10 pts, at level up.

You have sprint in lieu of increased speed. Witch is affected by your Stamina. Stamina runs out you slow down.

Short answer, I do not know. Long answer: A lot of hazily-worded [censored] to cover up the fact that I do not know.

I would assume, however, that they affect your health, magicka, and stamina, as well as your skills (perhaps).

I can tell you why , a reason they wont fess up to but its absolutely true

They want to broaden the appeal of the TES games, so they dumbed them down to appeal to the action fans

Just like what happened to ME2

Just like what happened to DA2

RPG focused companies keep staring at the 100s of millions coming from COD and really want a slice of that pie

And thus was born the streamlined and rpg lite TES

They decreased number of attributes, not removed them entirely.
They call it improvement, I call it simplifying
I'm still not sure who is right

because they dont make enough money off us nerds so they had to dumb down the game so casual gamers, lazy people who dont like to think and cod fanbyos would be able to play the game and not make any choices or think just kill things.

Partially due to redundancy. Because some attributes were nothing more than graphical middle men to derived improvements. Better to simply provide the mechanics for the improvements directly and cut unnecessary fluff.

Also, one DLC will allow you to ride dragons and other mounts in order to cash on on Battlefield 3's vehicle combat. /sarcasm

Hmm, I always thought of attributes as a modifier that adds bonuses to skills (like strength augmenting damage) not as anything redundant

This exactly.

Curse you, Bethesda! You are my mortal enemy from this moment forward, and no quarter shall be given!

To be honest this is one of the best changes with Skyrim, even in Morrowind i found the leveling system to be crap, especially since i am kind of an perfectionist when it comes to games i had to get +5 to the attributes I wanted or else i would feel myself undeveloped. Such a relief to be rid of that horrible system.

Diseases can affect regenerations, visuals, skills, run speed, attack speed, basically everything. ;)

If you look at the damage formula, in the UESP, Str played such a small part in Damage...I mean it was fractional.

At this point if Bethesda does not provide me with high resolution, quality textured shots of my in game spouses junk I will rage quit being a customer of theirs. In the highly competitive world of franchise games it's just unacceptable at this point. They probably reduced it down for the anatomy noobs into barbie/ken doll graphics!
